Alltel vx3200 ringtones and wallpaper

Hi All

First off, great Forum! I have learned so much from just reading and searching. Thanks for all the great info.

Now for my question.

I have an Alltel LG vx3200. Of course it has to different from the Verizon 3200's that most of the posts are about, so I added this topic to address ringtones/wallpapers specific to the Alltel 3200.

To start off, I also fell for the itrimming cable scam on ebay. I plugged it in, loaded the drivers, ran BitPim, and nothing. Called itrimming, but they were next to useless. They kept saying "load the drivers" and "BitPim isn't included with the cable". I ended up slamming them with a nasty feedback, and ordered a Verizon Mobile Office kit that someone had on ebay for $5. Kit arrived, loaded it up, and BitPim now works. That's the beginning, now for the details:

My vx3200 (actually I have two, me and the wife) is about a year old. Alltel is my provider. S/W ver T323ATV03, PRL ver 1205, ERI ver 100

The Verizon MO kit will work, but the Phone manager crashes. You can use the drivers, the cable, and also VZ Access Manager. Access manager is cool, since it makes the cell phone a modem. A very slow modem, but it may come in handy one day (if I was ever trapped on a mountain or something like that).
My suggestion is to dump the Venturi software that comes with Access Manager, since it's designed to work with Verizon's network. It just gums up the works if you don't use their access numbers.

Using the VMO cable and drivers I was finally able to make BitPim work, and noticed the following differances from the Verizon vx3200 posts I had read.

When looking at the file structure, BitPim will first just list the subdirectories as single files. I had to turn off "view filesystem", turn it back on, then re-retriveved, and then I could see the subdirectories. Dunno why, but I'm cool with that.

My phone already had a user/sound/ringer subdir, so ringtones was easy. Just pulled some off the disc that itrimming was so generous to send with their useless cable, and copyed them into the /ringer subdir. I did notice that the best way to add more ringtones was to delete them all using the phone's menu, and then re-add them all at once. Otherwise, new tones would sometimes not appear. I also remembered to always shut down BitPim, disconnect the cable, and power cycle it before trying out the new tones. So far, 5 new ringtones, no problems

BTW, the voice memo as a ringtone trick works on this phone. It's neat, but I haven't used it much yet. I plan to attach a mike, so I can make some clear spoken ringtones to use for specific contacts. It's a nice feature that I learned at these forums.

Wallpaper seems to be my stumbling block.
At first it seemed simple, as the vx3200 had a brew/shared subdir that looked promising. It added a test bmp to that subdir, and sure enough it appeared under My Graphics on the phone's menu. Trouble was, no image displayed.
I tried a few others, but still no dice. Unfortunetly, I hadn't read about or used Stumpy's bitshow, so that might have been my issue.

I decided that I would try loading a wallpaper from Alltel's Axcess Apps, and then use that image as a model for my own. So I found one service that gave away a free demo wallpaper, loaded the image, added it as wallpaper, then dumped the servce. Too bad I didn't know that dumping the service also dumps the image. Nice scam they have going there.

Not to be discouraged, I found another service and loaded another free wallpaper. I fired up BitPim, retrieved the filesystem, and dang if my brew/shared sub wasn't missing. Stupid Axcess thingy had changed my filesystem. Not a problem, I thought, I'll just find the wallpaper image, pull it out, and restore the structure. Well, turns out I can't find it anywhere. All the bmp's I see are just screens for starting/stopping Axcess. I tried pulling all my .bit files into BitShow, but they won't read. I also re-added the /shared subdir to brew, but now images stored there don't read.

Does anyone know about the Alltel vx3200's filesystem, and where the wallpaper's are stored? Is it in the dowload\wallpaper.bit file or somewhere else?

once again, thanks for this great forum. Without all of you, i would still be listening to junky ringtones
