XV8100 - Need help using custom Ringtones

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello,

I just bought a LG VX8100 and a 512MB miniSD memory card. I have version 07 of the whatever it is. So far, the only major changes I have made is going into the secret menu to reactivate the MP3 player, changing the outside "Play/Pause" key to use the songs in MyMP3, and switching pictures and video to be saved on my memory card.

When I view the memory card on my computer, I see the following folders:
MY_FLIX, MY_MP3, MY_MUSIC, MY_PIX, MY_SOUNDS

It's working well, I can view my pictures I took, and I can transfer MP3 songs onto my phone and play them. However, what I was wondering, is how do I use MP3's or sound clips as ringtones? The User Manual says that you can't, but I am very sure that there is a way. Can anybody help me out here? Help would be VERY much appreciated.

Thank you,
Dan

I'm very sorry for the double post, but this is rather urgent. *BUMP*

Holy moly friend. I found out how to use the play button from your post, so I guess I'll return the favor here. First off, are you using bitpim and have the usb cable? If so you just view the filesystem -> brew -> 16452 -> lk -> mr.

"mr" stands for my ringers. Put your chopped up ringers in there and you're good to go.

Thanks for the help, but no I'm not using the USB cable. Is there any way to do it via the memory card? If not, how much is the USB cable?

EDIT: And what do you mean by "chopped up"? Can I put MP3 songs in there as ringtones?

Just tried all I could think of. Even manually adding files to the My sounds and creating a MY_RINGTONES folder and putting files in there didn't work. I don't know if you could change the pointer in the config, but I have no idea where, or what, the affecting could be.

By "chopped up" I meant cut or edited. Considering the phone only has 32MB of memory, verizon only allocated a retardedly small amount for ringers. So, most people use a freeware program called audacity to cut the ringers and edit so you just play the portion of the song you want as the ringer, thus saving space.

At any rate. You can get the cables online for cheap, but I just grabbed one from the VZ store for $40. Heard about bitpim and decided to give it a shot. Replaced lame wallpapers and ringers with my own, changed the eri config so there is no longer free verizon advertising, upped my own ringers. It's sweet. Check it out.

Alright, I'll probably go out and buy the cable. Thanks very much for your help!!

I'm new to the 8100 myself but basically:

Verizon blocked you from using ringtones off the memory card. The only way to get around that is to copy the MP3's into that brew -> 16452 -> lk -> mr folder, then go into the dload folder and delete the mY-ringtone.dat and my_ringtonesize.dat files and reboot the phone.

Couple of things:

Some of the write ups suggest you have to rename the file from .mp3 to .mid (even though they are still mp3) I did not do this and they play and are seen just fine. Maybe the V7 software fixed that.

However from what I've gathered, there is a LIMITATION of the total size of ringtones you can put in that folder. It sounds like 2mb or 3mb is the limit.

Thus, you need to do a couple of things if you want a few selections of ringtones.

1) Download Audacity (freeware).
2) Use it to hightlight about 30 secs of a song you want as a ringtone
3) Use it to then save the MP3 but lower the sample rate down to like 40 or 56 from the original 128 (you will need a .dll file for this but Audacity tells you all about it)

Doing that method will allow you to fit at least a handfull of actual music ringtones in that folder.

One more thing, another method is to hack the my_ringtone.dat file and have it point to the memory card instead of the internal directory struction. I'm guessing that the downside of this is you better not take out that card or the phone is not going to be a happy camper when it's files are missing.

i see that everone depends on bitpim to get ringtone. sooo much work dont you think? i use datapilot for ringtones. i used it with the 8000 and i just bought the 8100 and it works for that as well. all i had to do was download mptrim to cut up my mp3 and im good to go
