A630 with no firmware.

So the company I work for is gonna sell a bunch of A630's and I asked if I could get one too. The problem is they're so straight from the manufacturer, that supposedly they have no software (I think they mean firmware) of any kind installed yet. Any idea if I could just use a data cable and run a firmware upgrade? Or is it not worth my time?
Thanks a bunch

I find it highly unlikely that any cel phone manufacturer would allow blank phones to be distributed on the market in any way.

Well I hope yer right.
I'm just the tech support guy, they handle the buying and selling
It's something along the lines of they over manufactured the phone so we bought the excess or something. Also they're brand new yet don't come with a battery or back plate. It's always confusing cause the sales people don't even know what they're buying and selling most of the time, they just know part numbers, quantities, and target price

Well I got the phone, battery, etc. And sadly it seems I get no signal anywhere. On the plus side the menus and all that work fine, there's just no ringtones or wallpapers or anything like that. I asked my friend and from him I got "The antenna is still in there, the piece that's missing is a big copper piece on the back". Hmm.... sounds like an antenna to me :P
So yah, looks like I gotta buy a broken phone off eBay just for the antenna
Unless someone on here's got a broken one to sell for cheap :P

Can you get more?

Posted by: DrThunder187

Heh I wish. After my friends found out, the requests came flooding in.
But yah as a reference. We took a SIM card put it in the A630 then drove to the highway (no signal). We put the SIM back in my friend's phone and he got 5 bars. Now even when the SIM card isn't in his phone, it still shows signal strength, but alas, no matter what I do I have no signal so I think I'm s.o.l. since Motorola says they don't sell just the internal antenna.

EDIT: Hey I'm a giant moron, how about I show you guys this pic I took
http://thundercg.com/phone.jpg
Something is missing from the circled part, what is it?

Posted by: Milkbone98

I never saw one open before, hard to say. That blows though, these things are still expensive on ebay. Try sticking a piece of coax on the external jack to verify the problem i guess, then go from there?

Posted by: DrThunder187

I've been thinkin of puttin a paperclip in there but I found out this morning the port is too small for even a coax cable. I did manage to put a saftey pin in there but still have no signal. I'm not sure if it's cause the phone still needs to be updated, or if it's the fact that a saftey pin isn't really an antenna hehe

Posted by: Milkbone98

a piece of stripped coax *should* fit in the ext port, put the solid inside and wrap the mesh around the outside. Funny that it wont fit.
You might as well just send it to me then lol

Posted by: DrThunder187

Haha it was 8am and I had to get to work. Now that I think about it it was very thick coax, the kind I love because the connection is awesome. What I need is the coax wire that I hate, the kind that when I'm not paying attention it stabs me in the finger haha

Posted by: Milkbone98

thats the one, dont forget about under your nail too

Posted by: DrThunder187

Well just 6 hours of work left and I can test it again.
My friend just bought the data cable and stuff so we can upload the new firmware and whatnot. It's just silly that I don't even know what this missing piece does

Hey there. No idea how far you've gotten with this phone but I actually just got my A630 and upon removing the back cover it is soooo completely different looking than the one in your pic. I'm at work right now so I can't do anything but I'll take a pic and send to you as soon as I get home. Laters dood!

Posted by: DrThunder187

Neato. You'll never believe this. My friend flex and flashed the one i gave him. He had no reception until he put a TWISTY TIE in the external antenna port and wham FOUR BARS hehe
But I think we're also missing the speaker that also goes in that poart? I dunno. Long story short the phone sorta works, kidna hehe

Posted by: Milkbone98

I was wonderin', thanks for the update. Sounds like if you find a broken one you're in business.

Posted by: chixxer

OK, home now and don't know if this pic is good enough but here ya go.

After reading your last entry DrThunder it seems you may just be right...that green piece is where my speaker is.

Posted by: DrThunder187

That's perfect! Many thanks
I found a guy on eBay who sells phones for parts and he told me he could just sell me the specific part I needed, but he was having trouble figuring out what that part was. I think yer pic will be more than helpful, especially because it has some sort of part number showing so it should be easy for him to pick up of a giant pile of parts

As for Milk, sorry looks like I'll be keepin the phone for myself haha

Posted by: darkoverlord

Hey I can sell you the Part, as I have a **** load of those phones, in various stages of disrepair. Let me know how many you need and I can throw them up in my eBay Store for you.

Posted by: DrThunder187

Sounds great! This other guy has taken forever, he gets to me like once every 2 days
As far as I can tell I just need 3 of that green part in the pic. If they don't cost too much
Maybe PM me a link to yer store as well.

Posted by: darkoverlord

No worries, I will figure out a cost for them, and PM you a price.

Here is my store if you ever need any phones, or anything else.

Wow sounds great
As an update my friend has been using his twisty tie antenna for 2 days and he says the phone is working awesome. Of course we still wanna get the missing part cause we dunno what a twisty tie does to the phone :P Not to mention we really really want that speaker.

Oh and don't forget it only costs 10 cents to list something on eBay today. So if you've been plannin on listing a lot of stuff in general, now is the day

There's a link in case eBay doesn't advertise it everywhere.

Sorry bout the delay, ended up needing some sleep, kinda comes up on yah like a Killer.

Anyways if you need 3 I can do that, the cost would be $20 each, and as long as you are in North America, I can cover the shipping costs for you. If you are interested, send me a PM with your email, and I will send you a PayPal Invoice for it.

Cheers
Dark
