About to buy a 8700, need help!

Hey everyone! I'm looking to purchase the 8700 for T-Mobile when it comes out in a couple weeks. My issue is this, I've heard a lot of talk while browsing the forums that getting my corporate e-mail's (on a MS Exchange server) pushed to my blackberry is not possible without getting a 3rd party group involved such as mail2web.com (which would run me another $20+ a month). Is this true? If so, then how do millions of people all over the United States with e-mail addresses such as xxxxx@insertyourcompanynamehere.com do this? Do they all just pay the extra each month and use services such as mail2web or do their companies all just have everything set up on different servers than MS Exchange? I would really love to be able to purchase a blackberry and use it with my corporate mail account and my gmail account (which is very easy to do) but if this isn't possible, I will have to go the route of an MDA. Any help would be great!

Thanks,
Ian

Ian - Does your company run a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES)? If so, your IT admin can light you up on that. You'll also have access to BlackBerry Internet Service (aka BIS -the Prosumer/Consumer service offering) through T-Mobile, which you can use to integrate your GMail account.

If your company doesn't use a BES server, you can access your Exchange email either through POP3 or Outlook Web Access with BIS or with Desktop Redirector.

No currently we do not run a BES. Do you have a link to a FAQ or somewhere that can give indepth instructions on how to access my Exchange e-mail on the 8700 (or blackberrys in general if it's the same for all of them)?

Posted by: nojsnave

OK, no problem. You'll be using a BIS account through T-Mobile then.

From blackberry.com:

BlackBerry Internet Service Knowledge Base links:
http://www.blackberry.com/support/client/index.shtml

How to Integrate with Outlook Web Access:
http://www.blackberry.com/knowledge...l?nodeid=786875

You could also set up a forwarding rule to the BlackBerry through Exchange as another option.

is there any way to make it look for mail in intervals faster than 15 minutes? Maybe 5 minutes? I guess I would just get the server information and what not from my companies IT guys?

Posted by: nojsnave

Yes, BIS has a feature that will do this. The BIS server default poll time is 15 minutes, but if it finds email on the mailbox server it will check back again in 3 minutes. If you're getting new emails frequently then the BIS server will poll every 3 minutes. This feature applies to all integrated accounts besides your primary T-Mobile BIS account (emails are pushed immediately).

Your IT guys should be able to help you set this up, but you can certainly do it yourself if you can get the server info.

nojsnave,
Thanks for your help. Our company I just found out are Treo people. They know how to set up the Treo 650 anf 700 like the back of their hand, but they dont know much as of right now about how to set the blackberry up, so i'm pretty much on my own. When looking over those links, I noticed that is was based on using a web e-mail client, as of right now, I'm just using outlook. What server information will I need from my IT Dept to get this up and running?

THANKS AGAIN!

EDIT: Also, I know I can have both my work e-mail and my GMail sent to my blackberry, but can I have those e-mail's seperated somehow and also have each of them reflect their individual "sent from" address such as @gmail.com for gmail and @mycorporateemail.com for my work stuff.

My pleasure -- happy to help

Your company needs to be running Outlook Web Access, which is a portal that allows Internet access to Exchange data. This is necessary in order to provide a secure means of accessing the Exchange server through your firewall. I'm not sure if they're running a mobile data solution to sync Exchange with their Treos, but if so they might be using this already. Ask them if they're running Outlook Web Access -- if so, then ask them for the info required from the instructions in the Knowledge Center link i posted earlier.

You could also use the Desktop Redirector, which is included in your BB Desktop CD to connect, but you must leave your computer running and connected to Exchange.

Re: your second question, while you won't have separate email inboxes for your different accounts, BIS T on T-Mobile will allow you to maintain separate sent from and reply to settings for each account so that the fact that you're using your BlackBerry to reply to your GMail account isn't obvious to the recipient (i.e. it's sent from your GMail address).

The 8700 is seriously sweet, btw -- hope you enjoy it!

Congrats nojsnave, you have successfully sold me on the 8700. Now it's just a matter of waiting until my local t-Mobile store gets them in stock. I was weary at first because I couldn't get a response as to how to actually do this and was almost at the point of buying an MDA (which I didn't want to have to do) just because I couldn't get a good answer as far as the Blackberry went. One last question, how is the web browsing on the 8700? I imagine it wont be as good as the MDA because after all the MDA is pretty much running IE, hell you can even download flash and java on it now. Also, what is the best AIM program to run in your opinion? I have seen so many different 3rd party options out there I dont know where to begin? Once again thanks!

I pay an extra $30-40 per month for a service that polls my account every minute. It make email almost instant and you can hold on a conversation with your customer in almost real time.

It is called Versa Forward Service. They have never failed me

Posted by: IanHummel

$30-$40 eh? I'll let it poll every 15 for now.

Ian Tmobile will have the 8700 soon I still have RIM training online with them & just yesterday I was able to select the 8700 for a quick refresher. Its coming soon enough, possibly, more than likely before months end.

btw, pick me up one too if you can?!

Posted by: IanHummel

Prom, I'm sure you'll be able to get it at the same time as me? If not, if you'd like to PM me, we can work something out for you to get me the money before the 15th whe I pick mine up at my local T-Mobile store. They're $399.99 with 7% sales tax, you do the math.

I was going to post a new thread with a similar question until I saw this thread, I hope you guys don't mind me jumping in on this thread.
I am also considering purchasing an 8700c soon and I had a question about email. I don't use Outlook as my email source, I only use Yahoo. Does the 8700c have the ability to notify me of a new email the same way it would an Outlook based email? Or would I have to physically go "fetch" the yahoo email via the internet? (I hope I'm making sense here)

Thanks in advance for any help.

^^ So to sync seamless with yahoo it seems that T Mobile got the jump on this. They have a sync option either as download (app) or an option in BIS. But so far have heard nothing for Cingular.

Currently, on my Razr I do get an email notification of my Yahoo mail which was a download from Cingular but it's sort of cumbersom and slow to actually get to the email message. I was hoping there would be something more seamless with the 8700c as you mentioned.

Thank you!

no sweat, Ian

With regard to browsing on the 8700, in my experience it's a much more enjoyable experience than on the MDA (or any other device, for that matter). While it would seem that a mobile version of IE would be superior, the fact is that it just doesn't translate well to a wireless platform (remember, IE is designed for use on desktops). For example, I find that the page formatting with Pocket IE, even when using the single column view, is not done as cleanly as with the 8700. This is largely because the BlackBerry service is strictly geared towards wireless data delivery and display; pages are rendered and compressed to download quickly and display optimally on a 2" screen, images are cached on the servers for faster download, etc. Pocket IE treats the pages the same way as if you were viewing them on a desktop and is not terribly optimized for mobile viewing.

Further, with the 8700's co-developed Intel chipset and the optimized OS software, it performs WAY faster when using EDGE than any comparable device. Remember, while the airlink speed certainly affects download speeds, it is in how the service and the device utilize that airlink that true efficiency gains are made. For those of you who don't believe me, I invite you to take an 8700 (with full IE emulation turned on) head to head with a WM 5.0 PPC and download a graphics-heavy page (like si.com) and see which one loads faster. Hell, I've even smoked an EVDO 700w!

As far as AIM clients go, I'm sure the rest of the people here will have a much better idea (I use the BB IM and GMail IM clients myself).

Visible Dragon: see this RIM press release issued yesterday for info on BIS and Yahoo integration. I think you'll be pleased

YES!! Thank you NOJ! That's what I was hoping to hear. I am definately getting an 8700c now.
Jeeze I love technology!

Posted by: nojsnave

I hear you!

Ever since I've experienced the sweetness of a converged device done right coupled with a kickass service and browsing I don't know what I'd do without it! Having mobile access to Google alone is well worth it -- now that I no longer need to remember anything I can go back to killing my brain with beer!

NOJ, did you just purchase a Cingular device and unlock it to T-Mobile? If so, how much did you pay? I'm going to just wait for the T-Mobile device assuming it comes out mid this month that is. If it gets pushed back or something, then I may unlock a cingular.

Posted by: nojsnave

I'm on a Rogers Canada 8700r, which is the same at the 8700c. Not sure what T-Mobile's version is gonna be like but rumour on the board is that they're going to be announcing it soon -- might not be a bad idea to wait and see.

T-Mobile version comes out on the 18th. Can't wait! NOJ, check your PM's.

Aof right now I am forced to either purchase a service like mail2web or go through Outlook Web Access. I have decided to go through Outlook Web Access where it just polls the server. I also have a Gmail account for personal use. Here is what I would like to do:

Have both of the e-mail accounts sent to my blackberry, however, when I reply to my work e-mail, the reply address will be my work account address, and when I reply to a personal gmail piece, the reply address will be from Gmail. Pretty much having two e-mail accounts coming to the blackberry inbox, but when I reply to each one the address reflects the correct acct. Could someone help me out on how to do this (if possible), or am I going to have to purchase a monthly program like mail2web with the blackberry addon? Thanks!

What are the methods of receiving email on Blackberry FAQ

When you set up yout BIS account with T-Mobile your Blackberry will be associated with an email address that will be your user ID @tmo.blackberry.net. If you forward a copy of your work email (your IT staff should set this up for you on the Exchange server) to the Blackberry's BIS address you'll receive email nearly instantaneously. I also recommend adjusting your from address to be your work email address for outgoing email and replies.

It's best not to give out your tmo.blackberry.net address at all. Once you start getting spam at that address there's no good way to filter or block it. The BIS has some crude filters but they're only vaguely useful.

Posted by: IanHummel

I figured I could do that, but can I set up both e-mail accounts to go to the BB and then when i reply to e-mail's from one of the accounts have that particular e-mail address in the "from" section.
