I'm waiting for quotes from 2 different suppliers, if i get them in good price your wish will be granted.

for now you can you preorder it on my website with free shipping ,and if i dont get them first you will get free 1gb micro sd but u pay the shipping

Posted by: Ishimaru

hberbout123, how many units are you getting? meaning, if i order now, am i going to get one when they come out? also, when i pre-order, it says that i have to pay $20 shipping, is that still true? and is the device still coming tomorrow? thanks.

Posted by: Ishimaru

well here's BS. I'm about to order from Smart Mobile Gadgets and they say the total price is $560, yet when i go to pay at PayPal, they tell me the price is $604.72. no offence, but that's ****ed up, and down right shady.

i'm NOT paying that price only to "hope" to get a credit.

that's true.. this is one of problem on the delay of releasing the 8500 to the public.
because its music phone and the A2DP very important so They are trying to update the blue tooth profile to support the A2DP out of the box , therefore HTC recalled all the units.
also there is some minor problems in the software, one of them that's mark bboy noticed on his unit the external display cant turn it on some time unless he take the battery off .

the engineering people working around the clock to release them ASAP. they are more excited to release them than us, specially QTEK people because this is the first time they will release product before I-MATE.

hopefully next week Will have more info

Posted by: Ishimaru

are these still test units or are they final production? you also mentioned that the final shipped rom was already installed.

see BBOY he posted some pictures for the TEST ROM i sent him.

also my customers will have full access to the NEW ROM UPDATE AND cabfiles etc..

Hope you didn't think my post was anything against you or your services...didn't mean it to sound that way if it did...all I meant (in response to darkjedi) was that I thought it had to be a goof and that there was an explanation as soon as you could look into it, sounds like you've got it worked out now though.

You said the phone comes w/ the EU charger, but to clarify...are you shipping an EU-to-US adapter for the EU charger, or the actual US charger for the phone. Just curious what you are including...I'll eventually get the US charger b/c those EU-to-US adapters are just a hassle to keep plugged in along w/ the weight of the transformer block.

No hard feeling Chris.. thanks for both of you guys the problem is fixed now i was trying to give every one the best deal and lowest price, i end up charging them taxes twice

back to your question
each phone will be shipped with EU-US adapter , the usb on the 8500 changed its very small now so the wizard , sp5,8300 etc.. charger will not work with 8500..

Hi hberbout123,

What did you mean if I don't get them first?

www.superiorgaddgets.com offer the Qtek 8500 for $499 + free shipping.

Can you come up with a better deal? People that are buying these also want a 1 GB MicroSD. Afterall , this is a considered a music phone.

Posted by: jomo25

MMB updated the ship date to 6/19 - roughly same as Expansys/MobilePlanet. I'm assuming the other sellers' dates will move accordingly. Can any of you confirm?

Posted by: Ishimaru

man i can't wait to get this phone i'm also wondering about the 1gig microSD card, if we still get it or not.

i will be the first to ship start shipping , what you see here in superior gadgets and the rest all usa reselers (ALL NO EXCEPTION) their supplier in UK and he get them from TAIWAN and he will ship them to the USA AND CANADA. this take atleast 10-15 day to get to USA FROM TAIWAN then 2-3 days to canada.

WHY I WILL GET THEM FIRST:

my shipment will be shipped directly from taiwan TO LAX in california. expedited TNT 2-3 days.

and you do the math

im still working on the 1gb micro sd, if i can offer it for free , i might sell it in discounted price only to my customers, will see

Sorry to jump in during the middle of the delivery discussion, but I have a technical question regarding the 8500:

I'm not really up-and-up on the phone unlocking bizzness, so please excuse this question if it sounds really n00b... I'm wondering that, since the phones come unlocked from these resellers, could I use the phone in Japan just by switching the SIM? I know that Japan uses a different network system, but I read a description of the 8500 on an ebay seller's page and it says that the 8500 can be used in "Asia" as well...

Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks!!

however, they don't use gsm in japan.
they use a variation of wcdma.

Posted by: jomo25

I am fairly certain it will not work in Japan since they do not use normal GSM - they use 3GSM I believe. But I could be wrong - check www.gsm.org

Posted by: Rexahn

Thank you for the insight, guys. I appreciate it.

I checked the gsm.org site (as per jomo25's advice) and found the GSM coverage available in Tokyo (where I'll be staying). It looks like NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone have a lot of coverage in Tokyo, but it says that it is a "3G" network... again, I'm sorry for not being so informed about the different networks, but is the 8500 a 3G phone?

And again, I appreciate your insight and patience, everyone.

Any word on if they will offer any other color aside from pink and black? Like I mentioned earlier, I liked the burgundy colored faceplates, but guess I am just wildly holding my breath for a return of something that wont come back...

the burgundy you saw color code wine red very nice( my sales rep she has one and she described the color like you are holding galss of wine against the sun light) but that was for the old design ( keyboard with 3 rings ) i was told will not offered in production units.
but who knows since the release date not confirmed yet.

the only one confirmed is mars pink and saturn black and one more is the dark grey( not confirmed 100%).

FYI

the discontinued the first design ( keyboard 3 rings) because its very hard to dial the numbers, and almost imposible to use T9.

Okay...so now I am really lost. If the production units release date is not confirmed, which version is being sold now?

Nothing is actually being 'sold' ... i.e. shipped ... it's all pre-order for the production unit. The production unit has been delayed w/ no official word from HTC on when it'll actually ship.

That's probably where I got confused. I havent read the forums in about a week. Last I heard the shipping date was the week of the 20th for some, later for others. I guess I glazed over the "delayed indefinitely" post.

Does anyone know if this phone has been approved by the FCC yet?

Posted by: SHoTTa35

umm it's on sale, i'm sure it's already approved. lol

Posted by: DanITman

This phone has not been approved from the FCC yet. FCC is only for the US, thats why you see it on sale from other countries.

Posted by: kenrothman

I'm in line for this phone... but haven't placed an order yet.

I have some friends in Shangai... is there any advantage to having them try to find this phone for me in Asia? Will it be significantly cheaper than the $500 i can buy it for here? Will I be able to have the US English version of WM5 on it?

If possible to get in China... where? I would have to direct them to a vendor.

Dopod released this in Asia (Taiwan) as the Dopod S300. It's being sold, I forget the site, it was in engaget and everywhere when it first showed up for sale. But not sure if it's actually 'in stock' at that dealer or if it's the same as everywhere else (pre-order). The site was heavy on the Chinese language, which I don't read.

Anyway...if you can locate one, you'd be the first anybody has heard from as far as owning a production retail unit...all of the reviews, picts, etc so far have been products directly from qtek, sent to various people to check out.

Chris

Nah, I'd still wait a bit, pay the $450 it'll drop to, and pocket the other $250. Or use the $250 to invest in some nice BT headphones (Jabra BT620s) and a 2-year subscription to Yahoo Music Unlimited.

After this initial first shipment, will you have more pink in the future? I read somewhere that its a limited color.

Im not stressing getting it asap and will be willing to wait until things settle down. After all Im just now going on one month with my SP5!!!

thats true.. the pink are hard to get and i will continue order them in the future.

Posted by: hylton

So, do any of the various retailers in this thread have any updates on ship dates ?

Just curious if we are still looking at next week, mid-June, or has it slipped even further.

Any word from the 2 main suppliers (Dangaard or Brightpoint) ?

Posted by: jomo25

Phonescoop doesn't show an official FCC approval yet. Not saying that is 100% accurate, but it doesn't show that yet.

Posted by: hylton

Somebody w/ more FCC regulation knowledge may want to correct me on this...but I don't believe an imported device, not sold by a carrier, requires FCC approval to be sold...it may technically be illegal to operate it, but I would think anyone could import it and sell it.

Assuming I'm correct there, the QTEK, Dopod, I-Mate version of this device will be an import...only the rumored Cingular branded version will hit the FCC for approval, which hasn't happened yet.

Again, I might not be correct about this...just my thoughts...

Chris

Posted by: mo98

importgsm is asking $599 for the phone (i-mate version I think), and mad monkey boys is asking $499 for the phone (qtek 8500 version I think). What's with the $100 difference. I know that importgsm has them in stock, while mad monkey boys won't have them until june 19.

The extra $100 isn't for anything...just higher priced thru them.

Also, did you call them to confirm that they have them in stock...the phone itself was delayed (at least from what i read somewhere) related to some issues w/ the ROM...dunno...but that's what I saw somewhere...although the dopod S300 is supposedly in stock some places since it's showing up on ebay and that it would ship immediately upon order placement.

Maybe importgsm has the Dopod version then ? ? ?

Chris

Posted by: mo98

Seems to me like these sellers should specify which version they are selling. (imate, dopod, qtek) It shouldn't be that hard to mention which one it is, and even though they are basically the same phone, they are a little different in their design. imate has the extra circles on the keypad while the qtek does not. I am not sure if I have seen any live pics of the dopod version.

Posted by: hylton

Yes, they should definitely clarify...and I think most place are accept ebay sellers and gsmimports, which may be one of the ebay sellers, looks like it anyway...

On the imate, it probabably won't have the circles...they just have images out of what it looked like as a prototype/pre-release phone...i am 99% sure that all versions, dopod, imate, qtek, cingular will have the keypad you see pictured on the dopod and qtek versions that are being sold and pre-sold right now.

Chris

Posted by: cjasus730

Actually, if u call importgsm, I believe they say that they only have the Dopod version.

Posted by: hberbout123

The picture they have on the website its for the old design (qtek and imate).. i think dopod design changed aswell and I'm not sure if any one have them yet.

my date still last week of June for the 8500 pink and black
i-mate date not confirmed yet but im working on it... they will release 2 colors BLACK and RED ( WINE RED ).
only confirmation i have on the black..

my price might change on the imate.

Posted by: mo98

hberbout123,

Why do you have the imate priced more than the qtek? Is there something that I am missing? I still don't understand why HTC phones take on 3 different names. Why not just brand it HTC and be done with it? Why create confusion?

Posted by: hberbout123

very good question:

all them designed and
manufactured by HTC, but they are under different brands. 3 different companies i-mate,qtek and dopod .

1-imate has online support and USA office(Florida) for warranty.. that's why its more expensive

2-qtek has usa warranty no USA office(GERMANY ONLY FOR REPAIR) no web support( im working on the support with qtek so the rom update will be available on my server for my customers only)
I HAVE THE TEST ROM ALREADY FOR THE 8500

3-DOPOD( i don't deal with them)
so the pricing its totally up to the branded company not HTC.

since im dealing directly with the main suppliers my price should be the lowest on the web . and more update to come on the prices and shipping dates.

Posted by: hylton

The whole HTC, Qtek, Imate, Dopod thing has always amazed me, it's just wierd...in fact, i read somewhere that Dopod was owned in part by the wife of the HTC CEO or something...IMate was it's own entity, just collaborating w/ HTC and using HTC as the manuf resource...and then Qtek being the fully owned 'marketing' arm of HTC.

Then, I read this morning that HTC is aquiring 50% of Dopod. Wonder if that includes the stake that the CEO's wife had, or an additional 50%...hehehe...anyway...

It's just a strange setup and I agree, it would be easier, and I would think more beneficial, to market and sell under a single name, at a single retail price...

It would also make ROM update, distribution, and flavoring much easier for the end user and carrier community.

Chris

So, let me make sure I understand. If you live in the USA, and you want to be able to get any ROM updates, then you should opt for the imate version. If I get the qtek, is it impossible to get a ROM update, or just a big hassle.

If the qtek version breaks, I would have to ship it to Germany for repairs.

Does anyone know what version (imate, qtek, dopod) generally sells better in the US?

2-qtek has usa warranty no USA office(GERMANY ONLY FOR REPAIR) no web support( im working on the support with qtek so the rom update will be available on my server for my customers only)
I HAVE THE TEST ROM ALREADY FOR THE 8500

3-DOPOD( i don't deal with them)
so the pricing its totally up to the branded company not HTC.

since im dealing directly with the main suppliers my price should be the lowest on the web . and more update to come on the prices and shipping dates.

I also noticed on another site that the Imate is pictured as still having the three rings on the number-pad. However, I think the one on your site does not. I'm going to "assume" that the number-pad is the same on all three (Imate / Qtek / Dopod)?

WOW!!!! This phone is amazing, I cant put it down, its light and sleek, it has 3D icons. WOW

Does the startrek have airplane mode? I've never had a WM smartphone, so I am not sure.

mo98: My smt5600 has Flight Mode, so I'm assuming that the newer version of Windows Mobile will have it, too!

Timback: how's the sync'ing with Outlook? How's the interface speed and useability?

The outlook sync'd really easy and fast, I was surprised. It took a while to sync on my Kjam, this was much easier. the speed is very nice and I have not had one freezeup or reset. I am not used to a program that works quickly and at a touch of a button.

I just got this phone yesterday. I need to agree with you that it is flat out awesome. I ended up uninstalling the 3D menu, but the phone is definitely cool.

You guys have a startrek in hand???

Where did you guys get it...do you have the Dopod ?

Want to post some picts for the rest of us to drool over !

I'd also like to know where you guys were able to lay hands on them and which ones you have, if you really have them.

Wirelessly posted (KJAM: DopodS300/Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; Smartphone; 240x320))

oh yes, definitely have it. will post pics later. i have the dopod s300. i got it from importgsm.com . they still have a few left.

Posted by: Timback

Same here importgsm and they warranty all their phones, you dont have to send it back to the manufacturer, they are really great.

Posted by: rperalta

I was surfing and found this case for Dopod S300 - which will work the same for the Qtek 8500.

Click this link

Posted by: hylton

So, for you guys w/ the Dopod, I know it comes w/ English and Chinese interfaces...but does the keypad have the extra Chinese characters on it, or just English.

Just curious...

Hope you guys get some picts and mini-reviews up soon (battery life, speakerphone quality, interface/application speed, impression on keypad quality and ease of use, etc.)

Chris

Posted by: UABigBird

I've attached some quick pictures. Since I was wondering this for weeks while I was waiting for this phone to come out, I took some comparison pictures with a RAZR. I will be posting a mini-review in the next few days.

Did the Dopod version come with A2DP??? OR any version of the StarTrk??

Posted by: hondaguy

So how do you find the keypad for text messaging? Can you tap out words by feel or do you have to look at the keypad? Can you take a pic of the 3d icons to give us an idea of how they look? How is the vibe alert, can you actually feel it go off in your pocket?
Thanks

Text Messaging is no problem. I uninstalled the 3D menu, while it is very cool, I prefer to turn off the grid menu all ogether and navigate by numbers. But the UI for the 3D menu is very cool. The 3D menu application does not use the standard icons, but has custom icons created for all of the pre-installed applications. The vibration works just fine. I have received a few phone calls while in meetings, and I had no problem what-so-ever.

Posted by: r1v3n

Looks pretty cool. I too would like to see what the menu options and main screen look like on this one.

Guess I'll have to start figuring out where to get the money to pay for this one...

Hey StrTrk users, if you could grab these files from your device (use ActiveSync) and post them / send them to me to post (PM me) that would be VERY much appreciated!

\Windows\bta2dp.dll
\Windows\sbc.dll

I think we're all interested to know if the "official" A2DP implementation is different from the one in the Tornado A2DP patch.

If you read this thread, everywhere it's gonna be available in a week or two is the best place...haha...but from reading threads here at HoFo, the best seems to be MMB (www.madmonkeyboy.com, least according to those folks that have purchased from him.

Additional places that have been posted to be good to deal with, just not as many comments that can be found about them are...gbtmobile.com, smart-mobile-gadgets.com, and importgsm.com.

As I've posted before, I've not dealt w/ any of them, but I'm leaning toward MMB or gbtmobile.com.

That was a huge concern for me, but the place I bought it from handles all of the warranty claims. So my warranty service is handled by a US company.

Can you grab the whole high-level folder and copy it ?

Also might try getting to the file from the phone's file manager interface and creating a copy of it from there, over to your phones documents folder or out to the microSD card...

just a couple of ideas to try...

Haha, nice

Actually, it looks like there is NO way to copy those (i.e. any file that is a ROM "module" file) from the device. I guess we'll have to wait for someone to get a hold of a ROM upgrade or dump the ROM?

Thanks for trying though, UABigBird

Maybe I'll dump the ROM In the next few days. I'm a bit too lazy to do that right now.

Sorry if this has already been asked, guys, skimmed through the thread but couldn't find anything about it...

What options are there to connect proper headphones to this phone? Are there any adapters availible? preferebly with a microphone, and a 3.5mm plug just above it..

I really think that the propriotary plug is a drawback, i love the possibility to use any miniUSB cable with my SP5, specially with the USBStorage app, it's a shame that they decided against it for the startrek.

No adapters announced to date, personally don't expect there to be one, but you never know I guess.

The other alternative, A2DP, assuming it's available (supposed to be) and just use BT headphones w/ it.

Quite amazing, a "music phone", with dedicated music buttons, where you are stuck with the god awfull handsfree headphones... Why am I not surprised...

Has anyone tried the headphones that came with the music variant of the Tornado? Those are so ridiculously bad it's pathetic.. Sure you can get (unoficiall) adapters to use with real earpieces, but it's not even mentioned by the branders.

What are they thinking with?

Well, get yourself a razor and an ipod and STFU!!

Posted by: Ishimaru

as luhtz (sp) has mentioned, the device only has 1 place for dust to get in, the power/headphone connector. use a2dp for heaven's sake. geez.

seriously, why would you want a phone supporting older gen items? a2dp is the way to go, not being corded.

Posted by: cjasus730

I don't think that mini-usb is outdated...

Posted by: mo98

Maybe they already have a nice set of corded headphones, that cost them money. Bluetooth headphones are not cheap.

Posted by: hylton

w/ regard to headphones, check out the new sony pendant that's coming put, it's BT, offers a 3.5mm plug for any headset you want to use w/ it (comes w/ a pair of average sony earbuds)...this will (IMO) be the BT A2DP solution to beat once it's available (actually I think you can get it in a few places now, if not, it's probably up for pre-order and shipping soon).

anyway...i agree w/ the posts about A2DP...the proprietary headphone jack isn't really a problem for me personally...i'd rather NOT have a $500 phone attached to a cord, we all know how that goes...slide back from your desk, move the wrong way, and your $500 phone becomes a really cool looking paperweight...NO THANKS...i'll take A2DP w/ the BT pendant clipped in my shirt pocket and keep my phone secured in it's case...

fewer places for dust to enter is a MUCH BIGGER deal, if you've owned an SMT5600 (or variant) or even an MPx220 (mine has dust too), you know how annoying that can get...

But wires are definitely outdated...the sooner I can get rid of every wire I have, other than charging, the better...

Posted by: s.c.s.i.

There simply are _NO_ high quality BT headsets arund. At most, they offer a sound quaity that matches cheep sony earplugs you can get for around 10 euros, and there is simply no way around this.
I'm not to sure about the bandwith A2DP can use or if it is really enough for _high quality_ audio, so i will leave that unsaid.

So to sum it up, if you want quality sound, there simply are no wireless options, andHTC not providing an adapter is a huge drawback, you can't really turn this around.

Posted by: Ishimaru

and you've used a2dp with how many headsets?

Posted by: s.c.s.i.

Come on, look at the prices... Show me the most expencive a2dp headset, and you'll notice that it costs around the same as a good pair of wired in-ear headphones, for example Sure E3c.. Draw your own conclusion.

And to answer your question, i've listened to two, the Motorola HT820, which i own, and the Nokia one.

Posted by: Ishimaru

you seem to fail to realize that people DONT want wires. and this phone has only 1 wire at any time. i'd gladly take a little dip in sound quality for not having to be tied to any sort of wires. the only wires i want is the charger, that's it! if you don't like it, don't buy it, and quit *****ing.

Whatever, you questioned my argumends about sound quality, and now you suddenly dropped that issue.. Strange.

I do not fail to realize that people don't want wires. If there were descent wireless solutions, i would gladely go for it. I dislike wires as much as anyone else, but realize that it is still too early to drop them.

And what does one wire at the time have to do with anything? I don't mind not being able to use the phone as a music player while it is charging, why would i want to do that?

I do like the phone, but I dislike this part of it. Does it really have to be all or nothing? Give me a break...

And how arogant are you to believe that everyone wants the same thing as you? So you'd gladly take a little dip in sound quality, but do you honestly believe that everyone would?

well you seem to be the one *****ing about it, yet no one else has; so yeah, i do think that people agree with me here. there is a slight difference in sound quality when using A2DP (which is because of the A2DP conversion process), but after using A2DP, why would you want to go back to wires? that's like saying you don't want to use a cordless phone because there's a drop in quality, and would gladly use a wired landline phone. where's the freedom? you can't walk around and do what you want. as hylton has mentioned, what happens when you shift you head/body/whatever quickly, causing your phone to go crashing to the floor, and also causing the headphones to either be ripped out of the jack, or out of your ears. yeah...that's worth it alright.

Posted by: hylton

on the sound quality, i don't think w/ any headphones, unless you hook up a pair of wired seinheisers, grados or something, that you are going to notice much difference in A2DP or wired...so that's pretty much a non-issue in my mind.

second, there are (i guess) the super expensive earbuds that sound great, like those stupid shure buds that cost a billion dollars, but for me, i'm not spending that amount of $ on something w/ a little wire on it to short out in a year or less...earbuds do not last, so a balance of cheap vs decent sound quality is key...and then you are back to the sound quality argument...

second, for s.c.s.i, as i mentioned, have you looked at the upcoming sony BT pendant, that will accept any headphones you throw at it...that might be an option for you, if you are seriously considering this phone, if you aren't, well then this whole discussion is really pointless and you simply value perfect sound quality over wireless capability (which is fine). i think most folks will not find a big issue w/ either crappy proprietary earbuds, or better quality A2DP headphones, or the sony pendant solution to get the best of both worlds.

I wasn't familiar with the Sony Headsets mentioned so I looked 'em up:

http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp...&lm=pp4&cid=112

HBH-DS970 and HPM-82 both look to be bluetooth; the HPM-82 is the one with the 3.5mm jack. Pretty awesome. I can't think of anything I currently do with "wired" headphones that I couldn't do better with a solution like this, and maybe a 3.5mm to A2DP adapter thingie (for listening to my laptop/home stereo/movies while my family is sleeping, etc.).

The HPM-82 isn't bluetooth, that's just a wired handsfree headphone/mic setup for the new Sony Walkman branded phones...

The HBH-DS970 is what I was referring to...it's a BT/A2DP pendant w/ a 3.5mm jack...so you can pair the pendant w/ your phone, and plug in the headphones that come w/ it, or any other set of headphones w/ a 3.5mm jack...or if you really want to weigh yourself down, a full size set of headphones w/ a 1/4" jack and a 3.5mm adapter...haha...

Anyway, the HBH-DS970 can be used w/ any headphones, and over A2DP...

There is also a similar solution thru bluetake or somebody, can't remember...but it's a BT pendant device that will accept any headphones...

I have a bluetooth headset with a 3.5mm jack I got through mobileplanet. it is called the itech clips35. it works pretty well. it isnt for audiophiles, but for podcasts it is great. almost all the earbuds available are like tiny torture racks for my ears, so this is a decent solution and it is available now, I think they were less than 40 dollars too.

I stand corrected on the HPM-82. Are you sure you can use any headphones with the HBH-DS970 though? I even downloaded the .PDF manual and had a a look and there is no mention of it, nor does it look possible. (Mic and phone hook button are wired in line, etc.)

I hadn't checked out the SE site/gear since owning a T616 several years ago. It is cool stuff, would be neat to have some of their gear again...

I think I stand corrected as well

Maybe I got the HBH-DS970 specs mixed in w/ the HPM-82 or even that 'fast port' music handsfree thing from Sony (HPM-70 i think it was)...but either way, I agree, now I can't find where i thought I read that the HBH-DS970 accepted 3.4mm plugs, and it obviously has some kind of fast-port type connection on it.

Now, if that is a fast-port connection on it, then there is a 3.5mm to fast-port adapter out there, which would work...but whether or not the HBH has fast-port I don't know, I doubt it cuz you'd think they'd include that in the specs...

Sorry for the confusion...I guess I read too much crap at one time...

Anyway...I can't even find the BT pendant (other than Sony) that I had run across at some point, maybe it was a dream...but it wasn't Bluetake, checked that...oh well, i'll search more tonight and if I find it I'll post back...in the mean time, I'll just keep my fingers off the keyboard.

Chris

Posted by: Redhed97

How dare you read too much crap at one time! Just kidding, no worries. Here is a link to a pendant type thing mentioned earlier too:

http://www.mobileplanet.com/product.asp?code=125691

The rest of the i-Tech brand items looked pretty cool too, but I could not find a web site for them. There is so much stuff out there! What is a fast-port connection?

The rest of the i-Tech brand items looked pretty cool too, but I could not find a web site for them. There is so much stuff out there! What is a fast-port connection?

Dats it...you da man...I knew I had seen another brand but couldn't find it earlier today...THANKS ! ! !

If you're looking for something that supports AVRCP commands you can do the Sony HBH-DS970 or the iTech R35 http://www.mobileplanet.com/product.asp?code=129703 or the Motorola HT-820

Does anyone have a current update as to when the Qtek 8500 will be available for distribution in the US? Last I heard was June 16th, that's this Friday.

smart-mobile-gadgets has them at the 26th. mmb is around there too, so i'm gonna guess the same time frame.

So, will we all be getting collector's item Qtek 8500 phones, or HTC branded phones ? ? ?

Wonder if the plan is to also kill off Dopod and merge to a single HTC brand, guess they finally got the idea that marketing under 3 names w/ the same device was stupid !

Qteks, of course. HTC is only planning to implement this strategy for their next round of phones.

Cingular is releasing the 8500... probably will be cheaper than imports.

yet 2 months late...

I saw this come across the wire earlier today, and I have to agree...too little too late...thankfully though, Cingular has gotten better about not crippling phones, so this should come from them pretty much just like the other devices, accept for the branding, it'll probably have a stupid Cingular logo stamped across the keypad somewhere, or under the screen...

But yea, it'll definitely be at a cheaper price point. I've managed to not jump on the Qtek 8500 order wagon so far, but only b/c I had to fork out a couple grand for a new TV last week after my old one went dead...I'm doing everything I can to stave off an order at this point, but I really really want one...and even w/ my upgrade date coming up soon in November, I still suspect I'll be springing for the Qtek before Cingular can get their version out.

I expect it'll be similarly priced to the 2125, probably a little more at first, but they are basically the same phone w/ the exception of the form factor.

Yeah, I've managed to dodge the Qtek order wagon, as well... but this is a phone that I definitely want and I'm sorta glad that I waited.

I'm kind of a wireless n00b, so could anyone enlighten me on swtiching a Cingular StarTrek 8500 to work on a Canadian Rogers network?

If it's not SIM locked, all you'll have to do is plug your Rogers SIM into the phone and go, just like if you had a Qtek 8500. But, if it's SIM locked, you'll have to get it unlocked first. Since no carrier has sold these yet, nobody has produced a program to unlock one, but the folks over at the SDA-Developers forum will likely figure it out as soon as some Cingular phones get out in the field...the same program that has been used to unlock older HTC phones may even work as is, like w/ the SMT5600/SPVC500, somebody can correct me here, but I think the same program, or a minor tweak to it, allowed people to unlock the WM5 stuff when it came out...

Cool. I'm sure Cingular is going to have these phones locked, so I guess I'll wait for the unlocking software to come out.

Thanks for your help, Hylton.

Do you know which carrier will support the 8500 if ordered from smart gadgets? I am with Cingular Wireless and they show nothing about this phone on their website so just wondering if it can actually be used if purchased away from Cingular....

Thanks

If you order the phone through Smart Gadgets, the phone should be unlocked. Therefore you can us any GSM carrier. in the U.S. those carriers are T-Mobile and Cingular.
