Laptop does not recognize my L7

I have a compaq laptop, with XP and when I plug my phone to my computer it gives the "!"mass storage device message in the device manager, and says that there was a problem during hardware installation and that the new hardware might not work properly. Under my computer it doesn't even show that the phone is connected. The phone even acts like it's not connected to the computer. My friends desktop will recognize my phone so I know it's not the phone. I have tried several different USB cords, and I have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try plugging in the phone and then rebooting the computer.

Rebooting with phone connected to computer didn't work. Thanks for the suggestion though. Any other ideas?

Do you have a SLVR with iTunes? If not, be sure that your connection for your cell phone is setup for "Data/Fax Connection" and not "Memory Card"

Go in menu/Setting/Connectivity/USB Setting/Default Connection: Data/Fax Connection

The "Memory Card" connection is for iTune cell phone and with iTune PC software. If it's not your phone, you must use the "Motorola Phone Tools" software that came (I guess) with your phone to transfert data from/to your PC with your USB connection setup for Data/Fax.

Hope it will help.

My SLVR does have iTunes. I have the Motorola Phone Tools and it also can not find my phone. When I connect it to the PC, it doesn't do anything. It doesn't even charge when under memory card settings. Under data/fax it will say charging. I also have a USB 2 PC card that allows my computer to run USB hardware such as external rewritable drives. When I try to plug the phone through USB 2 absolutely nothing happens. The computer doesn't make a sound showing that something has been plugged in and the phone does not change screens at all. I am lost. HELP

Have you tried to update your USB drivers?

Control Panel/System/"Hardware" Tab/Device Manager/Universal Serial controllers...

Right clic over all the USB controllers and select "Update Driver..." using the recommanded "Install the software automatically". If doesn't help. Use the CD of your computer or download the lattest driver from the website of your computers Manufacturer.
