Motorola L6: Connecting to USB -> "Insert SIM Card"....works fine other wise

I've got a Motorola L6 that gives a "Insert SIM Card" message
as soon as I plug it in to the USB port (there is a SIM card
which works fine up until plugging in the USB). Turning
the phone off and on restores the phone functions, but it still
can't connect over USB.
I installed Motorola Phone Tools 4.0, which used to work fine
over USB. Last night I was playing around with it, and among
other things, took out the SIM and attached the USB cable. I
also installed PST 7.2.3 but that also didn't appear to make
any connection to the phone.
Installing MPT on another PC gives the same problem with the
phone. The PC recognizes it as an L6, but the MPT installation
doesn't finish and the "Insert SIM" pops up on the phone.
I've tried the Master Reset on the phone...
Any suggestions?
