Toshiba 902T Mini Review

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: asendoh7

Hello Everyone,

This mini review on Toshiba/Vodafone 902T is for anyone who is interested in this phone or just curious about it. I received the phone yesterday after buying it off of Ebay. The seller was great in answering all my questions. He went by another name but I believe this is the Terenshi guy who posted a while ago about Sharp 903sh unlocks.
Anyway, that’s not important; we are here to look at the build quality and functions of this phone.

Box Contents:

Vodafone 902T x1
Desktop Cradle x1
Rapid Charger x1
Battery Pack x1 (I believe it’s the same battery as the 803T, Model:TSBS01)
Battery Cover x1
Stereo Handsfree Headset x1
Headset Adapter x1 (Allows you to choose your own headset, a wired remote without functions)
Video Output Cable x1
USB Host Driver x1 (CD-Rom)
User guides (A few different guides, mainly in Japanese…thank god I studied a few years of Japanese back in college.)

Looks and Feels

Keypad: The keys are fairly large since like most flip phones, this isn’t exactly a small phone. They are also placed apart with a little bit of space in between them. So far they are easy to use and very similar to the Sharp 903SH. I dislike phones with mini keypads without any space between them, but the SE phones I’ve been using so far are like that. Still, I am a fan of SE phones because of many other reasons. There are also a few short-cut keys on the right side of the phone. These keys are for volume control, menu button, and a camera button. Press once on the Camera button to go into Digital Camera mode and press twice to enter Video Camera mode. This is very convenient and easy to use.

Screen:
It has a 1.1” external LCD which actually looks quite nice. They seem to be hard to see under direct sunlight. (I did see a contrast setting, which I’ll have to play with later. This is what I thought the Sharp 903SH was missing. It allows you to set the wall paper and to display a clock.

The internal LCD is 2.4” and I believe it is on par with the Sharp 903SH. The colors are bright and fonts are easy to read. When I uploaded a picture onto it, I was amazed at the clarity, but the picture was taken using a regular digital camera. The phone allows you to set wallpaper (your choice), time (different styles are available), Calendar, and a few other stuff. Another plus is the ability to turn off the name of the service provider.

Graphics and Icons:
They are very similar to Sharp 903SH. This is just like most of the Japanese phones I’ve tried so far. In my opinion it is easy to use. Language wise, you are given the choices between English or Japanese. A side note for those who uses Chinese, this phone does seem to be able to display around 80% of the Chinese characters. You can’t input Chinese though.

Feels:
The quality of the phone itself is excellent. It may look a bit toyish or flimsy, but in reality, once you hold on to it, it feels solid. Once again, this is on par with the Sharp 903SH. The swirl flip is fun but I really have doubts that it will last a long time. Personally, I think the Sharp phone did a better job on this area.

Looks:
As mentioned before, these Japanese phones will look like a toy. But at least it looks like an expensive toy. The outside does look elegant and simple. Need find a way to protect the external LCD.

Performances

Reception:
I have to apologize for not being able to test much on this. All I can say is that it is on par with my other phones when I am in my room. I have the worst reception for both Cingular and T-mobile in here. The reception seems to be the same for this phone. When I am driving, it doesn’t seem like the reception is any worse than my other phones. Then again, I never had any good receptions. I miss working in Taiwan; reception seems to be much better.

Battery Life:
So far, I’ve charged the phone once, but that doesn’t count since I use the battery right after I received the phone. From what I can tell, the battery life will be ok for a flip phone. I have to use it for a few days and see.

Volume of headset:
The volume on this phone is on par with a couple of other phones I had so far. Voice seems to be clear as long as I have a decent reception. I think this area is better than my SE K750 which I thought was good to begin with.

Functions

This phone has pretty much all the functions of the decent phones on the market.
It includes; Bluetooth, Music Player (I haven’t played with this yet), Digital Camera (1.93 Mega Pixel), Infra Red, SD card slot, Java ability, Calendar, Alarm, Calculator, Currency Converter, Voice Recorder, Timer, Memo, Notepad, World Clock, and a few that I am forgetting to list. No GPS functions…unlike the 903T and 904T.

Bluetooth:
I wanted to talk a little bit about the Bluetooth of this cell phone. I was able to move files in and out of the phone using Bluetooth, but it specifically says that BT is only supported for using as a modem and headset. It really doesn’t matter as the profile is written into it. When transferring file, you must transfer into the correct folder in order to use the files. This shouldn’t be a big problem for most people. I tried transferring the MP3 files into the phone…always shows an error. I think it’s either locked or must be converted into other formats first. I really need to look into this.
For anyone wanted to use Stereo BT headsets, I am sorry, it won’t work. This phone does not have the A2DP profile.

MP3:
I need to spend some time on this when I am not so busy. One thing I noticed is the lack of any controls on the phone or the remote for listening to music other than volume control. Maybe there is an accessory for doing so like the Sharp 903SH. If you listen to a lot of music…this is a must. When I bought it, I thought it would have it…803T had the media remote.

SD Memory Slot:
The only SD card I have right now is a 512mb PQI mini SD, and it seems to work fine. I still need to try a 1gb SD card which my I need to borrow from my girl friend once she gets back from business. The manual did say that the phone only supports up to 512mb SD card. This usually isn’t a problem, but I am sure not all larger SD cards will work since compatibility issues rises when you have an older card reader firmware reading newer memory cards.

Ring Tones:
I think the volume of the ring tone can be a bit louder, but then again this is enough for me. If I am in class, I have to shut it off anyway. A lot of ring tones to choose from…but nothing too special about it. Need to figure out how to upload my own ring tones. The SE phones make uploading ring tones such an easy task.

From here on, I will list a few gripes about this phone:

1. Phonebook, I absolutely hate it. SE in my opinion did the best job in organizing phone book contacts. Then again, this is a Japanese phone, so sorting is a little different.
2. Drivers/CD-Rom…I have no idea what this is for. Should of included something a bit more useful. Most of the functions using this CD-Rom will not work with BT.
3. Missing Camera Lens protector, enough said.
4. The swivel flip seems a bit fragile.
5. The flip allows you to set different tones when opening and closing gets a bit old and irritating to me. It probably eats up battery as well.
6. Camera doesn’t seem as great as the Sharp 903SH, but that phone just performs too well when taking photos. It does seem on par with the SE K750 if not any better.
7. The games included are all demos…I wanted to try them, but only playable for 30 sec. When I visit Japan, I have to find a way to download these games. Y’s…one of my all time favorite so is Puyo Puyo.
8. There must be more, but I can’t think of any now…brain dead….haha

Anyway, thank you all for reading this review. This is my first review, I am sure it isn’t well organized and I haven’t covered a lot of things as well. I do have to apologize for that but I will do better next time around.

The reason why I bought the phone was because it is something that most people won’t be getting. Some says the phone is buggy, but so far, hasn’t seen any bugs or crashes. Keeping my fingers crossed on this.

If anyone is interested in knowing more about the phone, please feel free to PM me or reply to this post.

Once again, thank you for your patience.

By the way, this is an Unlocked Japan Vodafone Handset.

*I need to figure out how to upload pics later...sorry. I took some but don't know how. I am really bad at this thing.

Thanks for the review. I've been looking at the phone and can't really find much information on it.

Which colour did you get? If you can post some pictures of the actual phone, that'd be great!!!

Thanks!

Posted by: asendoh7

I will try to post some pictures later, I think that I will need to convert the image files first since it's taken using my digital camera...
I got the Red one...I thought the purplish silver looked good as well.

Posted by: asendoh7

ok...here is a few pics I've taken using Sony T3..

Posted by: Synapz

pictures dont work

Posted by: asendoh7

Just took two pictures using 902T, sorry...still new at using this camera phone, so it does not do justice for the phone.

Two phones from Docomo...my newphews toys...haha...sister in laws old phones.

Random shot...doesn't look too good, but I believe thats my fault.

Sorry about that...I got it to work this time...but the pics are so small after uploading them. I mean the ones taken using the camera on the phone.

I need to find a place where I can upload pics.

Can someone recommend a place?

Thanks

Very nice review Asendoh. Sheds a fair bit of light on a phone that's been out for quite a while and hasn't been that popular (unlocked Euro versions have been out for ages now).

If you want to learn more about the 902T, the English manual for the JP version is right here:

http://www.vodafone.jp/english/prod...2T_e_manual.pdf

Posted by: asendoh7

Thanks a lot, good thing is that I can understand a significant amount of Japanese. Just takes longer for me to finish reading.
It's a good practice.
Time to download the English version and compare...haha

Now I am thinking of getting a 904T just for kicks.

does the unlocked euro version have any flaws? (cause the unlocked jap version can't play mp3...)
Is it possible to flash it to the euroversion?

Posted by: AL9999

As far as I know flashing isn't possible yet. The Euro version is stuck with a traditional Voda red theme - looks a lot like the 902SH. It can play MP3 files no problem though.

Posted by: Damicci

I also have this phone. been using it for about 2 weeks now.
I love it.
Gripes are
Needs to be unbranded from the Vodafone network to use mms mail or internet email, and it doesn't play mp3. Now after you unbrand i don't know if the mp3 feature will become available. I am still researching the unbranding procedure, and trying to source a usb data cable and software.
if you guys have more info on this i would appreciate it thanks.

Posted by: asendoh7

Yeah, I will need to look into that...I tried converting MP3s to 3GP...and I think the sound quality really degrades quite a bit. No way I am going to listen to MP3s on that.
Hope I can find a way around this else this phone loses its MP3 function.
I won't use MMS or emails, so I think this is ok. Also I been having problem receiving English SMS...I get a blank page and the title is all jibberish, that might be Tmobiles problem so I will have to look into it. It goes through SMSC first so I think it's some sort of compatibility issue.

Anyway, I like this phone so far.
What kind of Stand-by battery life are you getting right now, Damicci?

Thx

Posted by: rami_d15

can we see some photo samples including ones with macro..... thanx

Posted by: asendoh7

Here's a macro shot...I need better skill at it.

Posted by: Damicci

I usually charge my phone everyday but i play with the video and camera alot and, haven't seen my phone drop in 1 bar all day. I'll try today to just let it go with out charging it for a day to see ho well it holds juice. I figure for all the features it has it should have a strong battery.

As for macro i have tried it yet either.

I have had no problems with texting. But I like the Email features b/c my gf live in Japan so we used to text each other often. I was hoping to start texting her in Japanese but i need to figure out how to activate that function but for now I can get by with out it. It isn't highly important like you said.

Posted by: asendoh7

I tried a few music formats...some work well for ringtones such as SMAF and MMF. None seems to have high enough quality as compared to MP3 playback.
3GP formats was worst of all I think.

Any idea what I should do?

Posted by: Timsta

welll mmf is probably the best thing u could have tried. have you tried aac yet?

Posted by: asendoh7

nope...not yet...the thing is that I dunno if it's the converter I am using right now or what...only allowed to do 200K mmf...which is about 16sec or something, but I want to be able to hear the whole song.

AAC...totally forgot about that one
I will give it a shot...thx

Posted by: Damicci

hmm aac I havent tried that either I think. There is a video file in the ringtone section called switch. Has excellent quality sound but ther eis no way to check the format of that file. I figure if you could find what format that file is using then you could f9ind a converter to change your music into the same format. I use xilisoft right now and it has an option for mpeg4 audio but the videos will not show as readable files. or if u use mmf and set the bit rate higher than 8bit mono you have the same problem. the audio files become un-useable. I will try aac also when I get home from work.

Posted by: Timsta

aac .. just use itunes for it. give it a whirl. from what i know. only 904T supports it.. but its definitly worth a try

Posted by: asendoh7

I just tried using AAC converted from xlilsoft as well.
Nope...unable to trasfer it.
Not a file supported on the manual anyway.
So far I can't use it as a mp3 player. I guess I will need to figure out something. Good thing is that in Texas, I don't think you will need this as much as many other places in the world.

Posted by: Timsta

wow. that blows monkey balls... there probably is a way.. we just odn't know about it.

Posted by: asendoh7

I was just playing with the SD card in the phone and now...I get a retriving network information everytime I try to enter menu. I can click on "no" or just let it do a search, but it's quite annoying.
I think this is similar to the 903SH reprovisioning problem which I didn't have on my 903SH when I had it. So...any idea?
Gee...definitely need to flash my firmware...haha

Posted by: Damicci

Yeah I am aiming for a firmware flash also I want to keep the Japanese useability but I want to unbrand it from vodafone. Should be getting my data cable next week when my gf brings it. I'll then just need to find out the means of the flash. Just don't want to end up with a couple hundred dollar paper weight. >_<

Posted by: Timsta

umm. you wont' be able to flash it.. you need to tools to flash. not just a cable.

Posted by: Timsta

and.. there is no debranding of vodafones... there is no such thing

Posted by: dkny_boi

And if you were even able to "unbrand" it, like for example when ppl unbranded the 802SE, you would lose all japanese useability. But even then, that phone was a very rare case since there happened to be a non-vodafone version of the phone. Which isn't the case with these phones.

Posted by: asendoh7

I found a way to cure that searching for network information issue I had today.
By swapping in a different SIM card and putting my SIM card back.
The only difference between these two SIM cards are the service providers and the version of the manufactured card.

My gf happens to be the person involoved in SIM card standards and her company is the manufactured of SIM cards...GEMPLUS...so that's where I get my information on SIM cards. She will test my SIM cards later with their tool to see if this is caused by their SIM card or the phone itself.

If others are having the same problem...try what I did.
Timsta, are you able to flash new firmware or maybe in the near future for this phone?

Posted by: Damicci

I see. Just been reading on GSM forums supposedly these people have flashed the firmware to debrand the phone. So you guys have any ideas on how to get it to work with my service providers network. So I can send emails and get net access?

Posted by: Timsta

interesting. can you send me the link. i'd like to research more onthat. cause from waht i know.. flashing isn't possible yet

Posted by: asendoh7

haven't heard of any flashing either...but might be out there...
I sure need that.
How are these phones unlocked anyway?

Posted by: Damicci

damn it I can't find it again. I was doing random searches for info on unbranding. And i swear I came across pic of someone who had unbranded the phone and the menu theme changed from red to blue and the vodafone live icon was something else. @_@.
Ah well If I come across it again I will post it.

EDIT I haven't charged my battery since the night before last and I am still at full bar. even after recording few minutes of video last night. I would say the battery life is fairly good.

Posted by: Timsta

ahh.. oh well. when u find it again. do sent it over so i can find out more.

i was p9okin around too this mornign for it. couldnt' find anything either

Posted by: asendoh7

isn't the menu theme suppose to be blue? at least thats what I have...but I do have the vodafone live logo...

Posted by: Damicci

Yeah your right. I think i was probably look at a different phone. Sorry guys. Guess just wait to see what other people figure out.

EDIT i was looking on here with a link to a 902t and saw the red menu. but it may have been a euro version.

TS-921 thats the UK or euro model number right? Man I hope someone can find away to fully unlock this phone.

Posted by: AL9999

902T JP version has a blue menu bar. TS921 Euro version has red menu bar. That's just how they were made.

Posted by: Timsta

yah.. i rather blue tho.. not a big fan of red

Posted by: asendoh7

haha...well...my phone is red...good thing I am pretty happy with this shade of red.
First time I ever gotten a red phone. Stands out from the crow whenever I bust it out.
Maybe they are thinking what the heck is this guy doing with a phone...but oh well, I could care less.

Posted by: Damicci

I get that question with mines too. "why is your phone red?" But My girl has a docomo SH901ic And it's red so I picked for my phone too. but the menu is in blue.

Posted by: voicunebunu

Hey, I have the Euro version of the 902T (TS921).

Does anyone have any idea if i can download the sync software for the phone from anywhere?
I don't have the disk that came with the phone.

Bollocks

Posted by: dkny_boi

If the japanese version of MyMobile works with the Euro phone, you can download it from vodafone.jp (under the 902T product details page). Otherwise try to find it on the vodafone.com somewhere? I couldn't find it.

Posted by: voicunebunu

Dkny, can I please have a link? I tried the japanese site, but i can't find it (not on the english version at least).
HELPPPPPPPPPPP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

Posted by: Timsta

dkny just went for lunch (i kno.. cause he just msn'd with me). haha. he'll be back soon.

Posted by: dkny_boi

Hahaha Yeah, was a good lunch too

Anyway, here's a link to the download

Click me

Just scroll to the bottom, click the red button, then on the next page, click the red button near the top and the download should start.

Posted by: Timsta

and chris comes to the rescue.. after he ate lunch and dinner...

Posted by: voicunebunu

Hey, thanks a lot man. No wonder I couldn't find it, I was looking at the english version.

Muchos gracias!!!

Posted by: voicunebunu

***MOD EDIT***

Use HoFo BST forum for selling not main forum boards, thx.

Posted by: asendoh7

Just out of curiosity...what kind of battery life is everyone getting!?
I am getting about a little more than 2 days with 1 hr use max a day...probably less.

Posted by: Damicci

About the same and i use my phone more than 1hr a day.

Posted by: Timsta

wow... that little..

Posted by: Timsta

are you guys using alot of the media functions?

Posted by: asendoh7

yeah I guess thats the norm for the battery life.
I probably need another batter, but I also need a battery charger instead of having to charge with the phone at the same time.
Gee...I have a feeling that I am going to have to go with those cheaper battery chargers sold in taiwan.

Posted by: Timsta

hrmm.. i'll see if i can find original accessories for Toshiba. there's not alot out there

Posted by: Damicci

I do with my son. And my friends are a bit fascinated with the phone so they use the camcorder mode alot. But 2 days is good with out charging and my battery was down only about half life.

Posted by: asendoh7

yup...I I play with it a little everyday, and if friends sees it, they will do the same.
Still, no way this thing could go on standby for 4 days....I say max about 3 days.

Posted by: Timsta

well.. give it some good tryouts.. i'd be interested to know as i'm sure many of the other ppl would too. every time i get stock in.. they fly out the door. so i never get a chacne to try for like 4 days.

Posted by: voicunebunu

There's a cradle that comes with the 803T(TX60) that I think charges an extra battery. The 902T uses the same battery, so that should be it for you.

As far as battery life, I thought 2 days is pretty awesome for a screen that size.
That said, I can't comment on the battery life because, when I get a phone I play with it continuously, so that wouldnt count as regular use. In any case, it seems that batteries have come a long way (I had a Nokia 6620, the US version of the 6600, that would barely last a day on regular use).

Posted by: Timsta

yah.. i just went and did some reserach for toshiba accessories.. making a list right now. desktopchargers.. extra battereis. usb cables. ehadsets. holders. cases.

Vodafone lists 2 different model numbers for "desktop holders" for 903t (903t being pretty much identical to 902t) and 803t. Plus the 803t's stand looks like it seats only the phone itself so it probably won't work with the other phones, or charge a spare battery.

Can you elaborate on this? So that means you were able to remove the 'reprovisioning problem" entirely? And this is with the Japanese firmware?

Posted by: 1tym

What is the difference between the 902T and the 903T besides the colours and the housing? Hardware wise, are they identical?

Posted by: AL9999

AGPS is the only hardware difference. I'm not kidding. The circuit boards are completely identical, except for the addition of the AGPS chip. Toshiba even said so to the FCC, so it looks like they were planning since they started 902T development to add AGPS in the future (the 902T circuit board has a spare socket where the AGPS chip should have been).

Posted by: Timsta

the gps is the only difference right? its world usage. but only on voda networks i believe. and the 903 was made in october.

Posted by: asendoh7

I can say if it's removed forever...it might come back again.
All I did was replace the SIM card with another SIM card from another carrier. Then power on to see if it's astill asking me for network update. It didn't, so I replaced it with my old SIM card.
Then back to normal...that was it. Very simple solution for now...Haven't seen it since, but if it happens again, I will try this again.

Anyway, a desktop charger for the battery would be good. I don't think the 803T charges battery alone, and it doesn't seem like it will fit the 902T either.
Too bad, won't be able to just insert a card into 902T and get GPS instantly.

Posted by: trancedazn

ooooh, if there is no reprovisioning on this phone, maybe i'll check this phone out. the red one is really nice, like the shine of it.

Posted by: AL9999

Japanese phone desktop chargers never charge batteries alone, they only support the phones themselves. You'll have to get a third party charger if you want to do that kind of thing.

It's AGPS - this is important to remember. The network actually needs to support AGPS for it to work at all; as far as I know it doesn't just work off GPS satellites alone. That's why all Voda Japan 3G phones with AGPS are being sold only in Japan (904SH included).

Posted by: asendoh7

Hmm...thanks for clarifying...
What happens when it roams? But then again, when roaming, cell phones will still look back to its own HSS. So that probably wouldn't matter.

Posted by: 1tym

Well when you are roaming, you are using a third party netowork, so if that network doesn't support aGPS, then I guess you are out of luck, and that really sucks! It would be nice if GPS could work in North America on this phone and on the 904 models. I think that GPS should still work in certain European countries since they do mention that this feature can still be used overseas. (Available in 9 countries and regions at time of launch: UK, Netherlands, Spain, Canary Is., Italy, Vatican City, San Marino, Germany and Hong Kong). Don't know if you have to be using Vodafone's service though...

Posted by: asendoh7

I did remember reading from the Japanese site that GPS can still be used when roaming North Amercia...oh well doesn't matter, it's a nice feature, but I need it on my phone yet. In the futrue...definitely.

Posted by: Damicci

I ended up resetting my phone when I got that network error and that took care of it too but if you take the sim card out and put it back in you will get the message immediately so. I am not sure why it starts doing this.

Anyone know what format music comes in when downloading from vodafone live?

Posted by: 1tym

Are you talking about doing a 'Master Reset' on your phone to remove the reprovisioning?

Posted by: Damicci

I am talking about the "download network information?" prompt when you go to the main menu. i have no clue about the reprovisioning.

Posted by: AL9999

Ok guys I did some research on the AGPS, and according to the press release for Vodafone live Navi when it started, it says that 'officially' support is available for 5 countries, but it doesn't mention any networks to use specifically. It also says that it can't guarantee the time it takes to load up map information in other countries, so other countries aren't included in the 'supported areas' description.

In other words, it would seem that it does work no matter where you are, but it could take time for location information to be retrieved if you're not in Vodafone Japan's network. However, you need a proper GPS application installed to take advantage of the service; Zenrin's Its-mo Navi installed in the phone is a trial version only, and without a properly working application, you can't use the GPS. Normally you'd get the proper ones from VF live! in Japan and pay for them on a monthly subscription basis.

So I don't know how you guys would get around that one...

'Download Network Information?' - this prompt is the reprovisioning problem and is unique to phones designed for Vodafone Japan's network (it doesn't happen if you actually use the phone with them as they intended).

Posted by: asendoh7

yup...this is a repositioning problem.
Just do a reset or a swap SIM. I wanted to find out a way to reproduce this...but can't. Sorry, I use to be a testing engineer...we live to do this sort of things...haha

Posted by: 1tym

Yeah, its the same thing...
You are talking the screen that comes up every time you try to enter the menu...

Posted by: 1tym

Okay, so you are saying that theoretically the aGPS should work, given that you do pay the monthly subscription fees and download the full app, but for us here in North America, that would prove to be impossible. Even if you did get the full app, you couldn't pay to use the service here. At least that's my understanding of what you just said...

Posted by: Timsta

yes exactly. the gps will work in north america though accordin to their pages but you have to be on the voda network

Posted by: AL9999

Yeah exactly. While GPS would work, you wouldn't have any working Java app to take advantage of it, and therefore wouldn't be able to use it.

Hence, buying a 903T is a complete waste of money and you should just get the 902T instead.

Posted by: Timsta

yes.. but the 902T is near impossible to find. not alot of them kick around. as well. the prices don't differ that much.. and u have better colour selection i guess

Posted by: 1tym

Yeah, that's right, I agree that the colour selection is better with the 903T. Although the phones are the same in ever regard, the price isn't much different, so I would buy the newer of the two.

Posted by: 1tym

Anyone know if the 902T/903T has the same connector for the charger? I'm interested in purchasing a desktop charger, but don't know if it will be compatible. Oh, and the battery, is it the same as well, considering that the hardware is identical?

Posted by: flanker27

hi guys.... kinda of a OT for 902t....anyway, i have a 904t....tried to encode and play a video clip on it.....haven't been able to get any success at all......i am using the 3gp converter? the one on the japanese webpage one? well.....it encodes...but my phone does not recognise it on the memory card... anyone able to shed some light on this issue? like what settings on the program, and where i should chuck the encoded file to? please help....timsta? anyone??

Posted by: AL9999

Yes, all Toshiba charger connectors are the same from 902T to 904T.

Posted by: Damicci

Asendoh if you want to recreate the prompt for network access just remove your card power up the phone and then power off re-insert and you should get the prompt. Thats how I got it to to do it after resetting the phone. I don't have another sim to swap into it though. and resetting the phone is a pain unless you have no other choice.

Posted by: asendoh7

ok...thx...I will give it a try later.
Try to find an inactivated SIM card, which works as well.

Personally, I like the 902T colors better, but thats more of a personal preference.
They do seem look almost the same though.

Anyone found battery charger yet? I am talking about the charger which charges battery alone. Having to remove a battery from phone to charge another battery seems like a waste of time and makes the second battery a bit useless.
Still haven't found any of the stand alone battery charger.

Posted by: dkny_boi

Haven't seen a standalone battery charger yet, but i asked timsta if he could get me the desktop charger for the 904T and he said he could. Can get them for pretty much all of the Toshiba models too if you guys would want just the normal desktop charger.

Can find them here under the Toshiba category. I'm sure he'll be able to find battery chargers in the future.

Posted by: asendoh7

The 904T doesn't come with a desktop charger?
902T came with one, so I don't need that.

Thx though...

Posted by: dkny_boi

Ooh ok... yeah, seems vodafone's been skimping out more and more on the included accessories. 904T doesn't come with the video-out cable either.

Posted by: 1tym

The 903T or 904T both don't come with desktop chargers, its strange why they decided not to include one...
Its the same deal with Sharp phones I believe, they stopped including desktop chargers with the 903SH models, whereas the 902SH model still had them...

Posted by: asendoh7

Maybe they realized instead of including it it the package, they can charge for it and ppl would still pay for it. Also to make the new phone prices seem more reasonable.
I sure would buy it if not included.

Posted by: Timsta

yah. its not too expensive for the chargers but they've stopped including them. BUT the toshiba 803T comes with them. tis the only toshiba phone that comes with a real full set of acecssories

Posted by: AL9999

The 904SH comes with a battery, AC charger and software CD.

That's it.

So yeah... they're cutting down on accessory inclusion alright.

Posted by: silverbluice

i recently bought a 902t and i noticed the battery life only lasted around a day from normal usage including camera function and minor talk time

any opinions?

Posted by: asendoh7

Mine up to around 3 days...but I don't play with the phone much now. When I first got it...it was around a day as well.
Maybe you can get another battery.

Posted by: dkny_boi

I could've sworn 903T (and 902T as well since it used the same battery) came with a higher capacity battery than the 904T's do. And my 904T will last me at least 2 days with a couple hours of talk time, and a decent ammount of messaging. I don't use the camera very much at all though.

-edit-
Just checked... 903T came with a 1000mah battery, while the 904T only has an 880mah battery.

Posted by: Timsta

903t needs a bigger bat.. it needs the juice to power its gps functionality in japan

Posted by: dkny_boi

Yeah, but since the 904T has the gps too, i wish it still had the 1000mah battery... Would've been nice

Posted by: Timsta

lol. NO BIGGER BATTERY FOR You.. they probably figured out a way to conserve battery life.. or just figured they want yo uto buy a new a battery

Posted by: dkny_boi

Haha, yeah... kinda sucks. I figured they made a more efficient camera, because i could've sworn there was auto-focus on the 902T and 903T

Posted by: m_anton

Hello. I live in Ukraine. My english is bad.
My question: Whether such 1GB SD Memory Card (Transcend 80x) on a telephone Toshiba TS921 (Evropean version 902T) will work?

Posted by: Timsta

yes it will work.. quite well too

Posted by: m_anton

To Timsta - very big thanks.

Posted by: m_anton

Question: I convert video film avi (700 mb) to 3gp2, but not working on my phone (invalid format)
Please write this what program and setting.

Posted by: AndyCee

@m_anton:

After some trial and error I found the following settings would let me get around 20 minutes of video on the phone:

Program: Helix Mobileproducer 10
Video: MPEG-4SP (not H.264) @ 256-512kbps
Audio: AAC @ 32kbps / stereo
Encoding complexity: Medium or Low

Any longer than about 20 minutes and the phone would give me an invalid file format error. If you encode the video without sound you should find you can have any length you want, but that's not much help if you're trying to watch a film

Posted by: m_anton

To AndyCee - i download program RealProducer Plus 11, but i don't understeand? what i convert video. In setting not MPEG-4SP (not H.264) @ 256-512kbps. Please white this what i do convert and send me images (print screen) - anton@ukrpapir.com.ua. Thanks.

Posted by: AndyCee

I don't really want to spend the time writing up a guide for how to convert videos (sorry I'm lazy), especially as I'm getting rid of my TS921. But for starters, you don't want to be using RealProducer. That'll only give you realmedia output I think, and although the phone will play it you're much better off using MPEG-4.
Quote:
Program: Helix Mobileproducer 10

Use that instead. I'm sure other MPEG-4 encoders will work but that's the one I have some experience with.
Also, I should mention that in Mobileproducer you would need to select the 'basic' MPEG-4 profile rather than streaming.

My advice is to find a good encoder and play around with the settings based on what I've posted, or see if you can find a video encoding guide for a similar spec phone.

Posted by: Damicci

Will this work On the Japanese 902t I tried MPEG4 and was unsuccessful.
Also any body know how to get better quality music on this phone? Beat Engine doesn't work for this phone.

Posted by: m_anton

To Damicci- MPEG4 (176x144) or MPEG4 (320x240)?

Posted by: AndyCee

Ah I just remembered! For those having problems getting any videos to work on the TS921, I used to use this program before Helix... http://www.nurs.or.jp/%7Ecalcium/3g...onverter034.zip

It's meant for the PSP but as long as you choose 320x240 and 15fps it works fine. Not sure you'll be able to transfer videos longer than about 10 minutes, but it does at least work.

It's dead simple to use, just point it to the file you want to convert and hit the big button. It'll generate an MHT file as well but you can just delete it as it's not used by the phone.

My phone didn't sell on Ebay (even with a 1GB memory card... bummer!!) so if I find a decent method of converting videos of any reasonable length, say 45 minutes, then I'll whip up a tutorial and post the link on these forums.

Posted by: Damicci

either or, sorry for the slow response.
but yeah I am beginning to think i may post this puppy up for sale and buy a newer model maybe.

Posted by: Timsta

upgrade to sharp? or 904T?

Posted by: Damicci

Maybe the 904T

Posted by: silverbluice

has anyone tried their bluetooth function?
i have tried it w/ my headset and it works perfectly
however, i can't find a way to transfer files to another cell phone
when i click send.. the only options are infrared and mms

does anyone have any idea to transfer files?

Posted by: AndyCee

Using the TS921, I haven't found a way to send any files via bluetooth which aren't pictures.

Also, receiving files is very VERY limited. This seems to be the way the phone was made, and there's not much (if anything) that you can do about it. I get the dreaded "Cannot save file" error when I try.

To sum up, bluetooth seems to be limited to pictures. You can do more via IR, but not much.

This is just my experience, however.

Edit: Those 3 beeps the phone does when it can't do something are starting to make me psychotic because I'm hearing them SO DAMN MUCH.

Posted by: silverbluice

my 902T is even worse..i can't even find a way to send pictures

i also tried receiving pictures, but i had no luck.. i had the same problem " can not save files"

is this problem because it isn't fully unlocked?

Posted by: Timsta

the bluetooth functionality is limited on these phones guys.. as you progress up the mdoel chart.. the bluetooth functionality has improved. ur best bet is to use the memory card to transfer files

Vodafone 902T black. I just got this phone, and it is built very well. My previous V3x doesn't even compare. Some comments:

1. Phonebook sorting... turns out you also need to fill out the "Reading" field in order to sort it properly. My phonebook was a gigantic mess when I copied it over from my V3x. I had to manually enter in the first name of every person on my contact list for that field.

2. The swivel, while cool, seems not that stable especially when you take it out of your jean pockets. More than once I've pulled it out of my pockets and it's already a little turned. It appears solid but we'll see how it holds up to the test of time.

3. USB/Bluetooth connectivity is not well documented. I had to dig through the CD and read the included PDF files again and again until I got it setup. I think this could have been documented better.

4. Camera is awesome. I think it takes better pictures than my overpriced 4MP Sony camera. Too bad no optical zoom. I might actually use the camera on my phone for once.

5. The blinking light (which is adjustable in color) is really nifty. Looking forward to customizing this.

Some questions for those of you that have this phone:

1. Any way to edit the contact list from your PC, aside from sync-ing it to Outlook? I would hate to re-enter all those Reading fields again.
2. Where do I put MP3 files in the memory card in order for it to be played from the media player?
3. I'm on the "3" service in Hong Kong. Can I put in the 3 WAP settings, or am I screwed by the Vodafone software?

Posted by: superdx

Oh one more thing... is there any way to play MP3 files on the phone? Seems to be nothing in the documentation about the Media Player, and where I should put the files..

Posted by: AL9999

Answers to your questions:

1. As far as I know there is no specific synch software, so Outlook is your only bet. The reading field is designed for Japanese names (it's a Japanese thing, I'll spare you the long explanation on this one ) and because your phone was designed for Japan, it's there. The only way you can enter a reading field in Outlook is to have the Japanese version of Outlook, so unfortunately there's no way around this one.

2. MP3 files can't be played by the 902T at all. The only digital music supported is called Chaku-Uta, which is an encrypted type of AAC file.

3. Yes, if you know the WAP settings you can enter them directly and you should be able to get on 3's page without problems (although downloading content may not work properly - you need a 3 customised phone for that). I can't help you with this though...

Posted by: superdx

Thanks for your reply... I know about the Japanese reading thing, it's quite annoying. I actually have access to Japanese Outlook but switching to it just for the phone is not an option (my colleagues would think I'm nuts, hehe).

Is the Chaku-Uta same as the one that the Beat Engine software produces? I managed to download a version on the Vodafone JP site, and it installed in English.

I hooked up my SD card to a USB reader and it detected fine, but when I actually tried to transfer it complained that:

1. My SD card was not formatted by my phone (which I did) or...
2. My memory card is not a miniSD card (which is true).

Any other software that might encrypt the files for me? I would hate to use this 1GB stick only for photos...

I bought a 903T for my gf, does it have the same limitations? I read that it's able to play back MP3... just needs to be encoded by the Beat Engine software.

Posted by: chris_laz

I can not get any video to play on the 902. I tried the converter meant for the PSP with no luck. Which format am I suppose to use with that converter? I cant find that Helix program to try. Is there any other way to get video on to my phone? I am not looking for long clips. Majority of them will be under 5 min.

Posted by: channa9

I'm having problems in organizing my contacts list in the 902T.

The contacts are all saved in the SIM. could anyone advice me how to arrange the contacts in alphabatical order please?

Right now I have to go through the entire list one by one.

903T doesn't play regular MP3's transferred with the BeatEngine, I tried it with BeatEngine that came with my 904T. I think 903T will only play those protected MP3's that you download from the official vodafone's website. Correct me if i am wrong.

channa9>>> move the contacts to the phone's memory and use "reading" to alphabetize it. if you want to sort them by first name, rename your "last name reading" to first name, done

Posted by: SimonsayZ

I guess not many people are using 903T? Well, I got myself a white one which I think it's pretty neat. Though the camera is not that good compared to my 903SH, the pictures from 903T are still OK.

After using 903T for sometime, I find it's nicer and UI a little easier to use than my 903SH, though that's just my personal opinion.

Anyway, 903T is a great phone to use.
Here's some pics of my white 903T.

Oh the flip is kinda flimsy which I'm not sure if its suppose to be like that.

Posted by: Junglizt1210

i want that wallpaper you have in the last pic

i do rather like the fact that the 903T has a proper external screen unlike the 904T..... the 904T couldn't ever be slated as an upgrade over the previous Toshibas due to lack of AF and the external screen.

I can post up the pic later as Im in my office PC and dont have this pic here yet.
Will upload the pic later.

Here's the wallpaper.

Also just got myself a vodafone strap. Personally, I find red really matches the white. But that's just me.

Posted by: wibisana27

hello. I am sorry if im posting in the wrong place. But I thought since the phone is related to the brand, I have a vodafone 903T. My question is, does it come with preinstalled games? I dont have it in my phone. It only came with the NAVI software. I also have a Voda 904T but this phone comes with 3 games. Is it normal or what? please advice. thanks

Posted by: yangj08

I think that you can put AMR-encoded 3GP files in the media player for the 903T/902T. Problem is, it sounds like an AM radio.

Posted by: ace587

cool, thanx for the wallpaper lol

I don't think 903T comes with any games. 904T only comes with 3 games, and they are all demo games. It's normal for them to include some demo games in the phone, but they aren't much fun.

Posted by: SimonsayZ

My 903T does not come with games either. Just the navi.

Well, that's the bad thing about 903T. You can't play mp3 music on the media player as it only supports japanese encrypted music file chaku-uta. This encrypted file can only be purchased in Japan. It's like aac file but another type of encryption?

But you can use ringtones in mmf format converted from mp3 to wav to mmf. But it must not be more than 300kb. Hope this helps.

I dont play music on this phone, only the ringtones I guess.

Posted by: yangj08

3GP format is supposed to work, but not with AAC audio. You have to use Quicktime Pro to encode your audio in AMR format (and give it a .3gp extension). It'll sound bad, but it's all the 903T will play.

Posted by: nx2000

Hy,

Does enyone know whare I can find Complete Cover in RED color for Mobile Phone Toshiba 902T ?

Thank You

Posted by: aw614

bought pkzild;s 902t, been happy with it, mmf ringtones are ok for me since my 6230 and pantech have mp3 already. got it mostly for the camera which does a fairly good job. still learning the settings on the camera, but I think outdoor pics are where it works best.
took this today in the afternoon, doesnt look to bad at full size either

Posted by: ace587

haha, is that a pre-roadkill shot lol

Posted by: aw614

btw I have tried to put a few images from the wallpaper thread from the sharp forum and I get this file cannot be played, they are regular jpgs too

Posted by: aw614

another update, bluetooth transfer does work with the widcomm drivers, just got my new usb dongle and it works quiet nicely though it is annoying that you have to disconnect from phone and keep hitting yes to accept files. oh well, but it works.

Posted by: EC28

got a 904T, any idea how the scanner mode works, it got files where I believe you can download what??..scanned images?...tried scanning images, switch the camera to micro mode, but all I've getting so far is "SCANNING FAILED".

Posted by: aw614

hmm usually I try using the autofocus on my 902t when I use the scanner to scan barcdoes or I use the manual macro mode. did you try the barcodes like on jung's avatar?

all you really get is a link to a website or a message

Posted by: AL9999

I don't think EC28 realises it's a barcode scanner.

As mentioned, the scanner is used to scan barcodes that store information like website links and contact entries. It doesn't scan pictures or anything like that.
