Easiest Way To Upgrade SD Card?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I am currently using a 256 MB SD card in my Treo 650 but I would like to upgrade it to at least a 1 GB card. What is the easiest way to do this?

My current card has numerous Mp3 files, Word docs, Excel files and many jpg's and video clips, as well as a couple of applications. I have done some reading on this but I am still a little confused on a couple of things.

1) When I first purchase my new SD card should I format it in the Treo first?

2) Will this process create the necessary (and same) directories (minus program or created directories) that are on my old card?

3) Once this is done can I just copy all of the existing files over to the new card using my card reader and computer and place them in the appropriate directories?

4) Will any installed programs on the SD card have to be re-installed or can I just copy them over as long as I make sure the directory is set-up the same?

5) I installed Backup Buddy and Beiks Dictionary/Thesaurus on a different SD card but I would like to get it on the same (new) SD card as everything else. Can I just copy again as above?

When I read the directories of my existing card in my card reader, it shows the following directories:

DCIM (this is where my .jpg pictures reside and a sub-directory called #Thumbnail - I think I created this one)

Documents (I think I created this one but it looks empty)

mVoice (purchased program but it looks empty)

PALM (with sub-directories 'Launcher' and 'programs'; the files within 'Launcher' are BackupBuddyVFS, LAUNCHER and READER and the sub-directories within 'programs' are BBVFS which looks empty and DXTG which has 2 files which I created in Word)

RN_AUDIO (with one sub-directory called 'Playlist' holding a file called Playlist 1.pls)

Any help on this issue is much appreciated as I am coming over from the "Dark Side" and still trying to get a feel for how the file system and directories work.

Kabuki, are you there???

1. Yes. Since Palm OS use FAT instead of FAT32, format new SD in Palm is a good idea.
2. No. *guess you mean "palm" folder.
3. Just copy everything from the old one to the new one.
4. Just copy everything and they will be fine.
5. Yes, again

Thanks hchai for your quick reply. So on point 2, what you are saying is when the card is formatted in the Treo, the only folder created is PALM (which is in essence the FAT file system)?

I didn't realize Palm only used FAT and not FAT32. Now this all makes sense.

Thanks again.

Actually you can get a Treo 650 to support FAT32 by replacing the builtin FAT driver with a FAT32 driver (this is a ROM hack). My boss purchased a 4GB SD card for his Treo 650 and belatedly discovered he could only format it to 2GB. I will be upgrading it to support FAT32 as soon as he is back in the office.

Yes, Treo will only create that Palm folder, AFAIK.

About FAT32, just one thing to remember - "be careful with the ROM hacks!" You might end up with a $600 paperweight

@ hchai

No problem, I don't intend to change the file structure or get in to any hacks at all. This device is a pretty important business tool for me with over 1,700 contacts and history notes.

I just didn't know the techincal reason (FAT vs. FAT32) that I couldn't take the SD card out of my PDA2k and plop in in my Treo and read the same files/music/pictures.

Now that I know, I will format my new SD card in the Treo first, then copy my directory structure and files over.

Thanks everyone.

I agree though it wasn't my idea to hack the Treo, it is my bosses idea and I have explained the worst case situation. He dropped a small fortune on the 4GB SD card before checking into the 650's support for it and wants to use it to it's full capacity.

Worst case it appears that should it really get screwed up, it is still possible to get into flash mode and flash a clean unmodified ROM to it.

Ok all, I have purchased a new SD card. Actually, I purchased a 2 GB Sandisk Ultra for use in my Windows (ooops, did I say that?) device because I use it for SatNav and entertainment (movies/music).

I took my 1 GB SD card (out of my windows device), copied all files on to my laptop and then formatted it in my Treo. Then I took my 256 MB SD card out of my Treo and copied all of the files on to my laptop and then back over to the 1 GB SD card with my card reader using the same file structure. Everything works fine.

Now the BIG question. How do I move all of the programs I have originally loaded into internal memory on the Treo over to the SD card? Or, do I have to re-install them individually, placing them on the SD card instead? I have FileZ currently installed in internal memory.

The FAT32 upgrade went smoothly and the boss now has a fully functional 4GB SD card in his Treo 650. With the right tools it is a breeze to patch the ROM!

Check this: PowerRun.

Thanks everyone. I did a bit of reading and decided on ZLauncher, only because it was so customizable. PowerRun also looks good but I like the idea of being able to change skins as well.

Once loaded, ZLauncher is so easy to use to move progams/files. The nice thing is that when you highlight the program you want to move and click on "Move To Card", ZLauncher automatically grabs all the files associated with that program too. Nice and clean.
