Bluetooth or PDANet DUN

I have two options for DUN.

1. Buy PDAnet for the Treo 650 ($24.99 upgrade from 600 version). I already have the retractable sync and charge.

2. Buy a Bluetooth USB for my laptop and use Bluetooth DUN. Do the cheap ones work as well as the more expensive units ? Microcenter has one for $19.99.

I connect using a VPN (Aventail) that slows down my connection.

My question is what is the difference in connection speed between the two ?

Cost of entry is the same, so I'm interested in the best connection.

My service provider is Sprint and Bluetooth DUN is outlined in the owners manual.

Thanks,
Todd

Well I can't speak for the PDAnet solution, as I haven't tried it yet. I have used Bluetooth DUN with my Treo 650 before. It is sloooooooooooooow. If you're in a pinch, it's better than nothing, but it is absolutely slow.

You will get about the same speeds. i.e. slow. So I would go with Bluetooth because you can use it to hotsync, or transfer files from your PC to the treo without hotsyncing. If they cost the same you will get more benefits than just DUN from bluetooth.

Anyone tried both and have comments ? I don't expect great speed, but I certainly don't want to bog down a slow connection.

Thanks,

I've used both PDANet over a bluetooth connection and played with a straight bluetooth DUN connection. PDANet emulates a DUN session via a bluetooth serial port profile while the other method uses the DUN profile. Since both run over bluetooth, they will be of equivalent speeds and limited by bluetooth's inherent speed (slow by network standards).

A PDANet session over the USB cable would be MUCH faster, given USB 2.0's greater bandwidth.

So for raw speed you can't beat a USB connected PDANet session. For ease of use, bluetooth wins because you don't need to plug a cable nor carry one with you.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Dr. Smith. That's exactly what I wanted to know. I may play with the Bluetooth to try reverse DUN (may come in handy around the house). Time to upgrade PDANet from the 600 to the 650 version.
