Treo 650 and SD card... HELP!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I was running a treo 600 (unlocked) and 256MB SD card untill about a month ago. Then I picked up a treo 650 (unlocked) and a 1GB SD card. Once I got my 650 both memory cards don't work. I tried formatting them on my PC and Mac and it either says format card and then it says read only OR it will say card not writable read only and then not show up at all. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!! I am sitting here with 2MB left on internal memory and a 1GB card and I am really frustrated that it won't work. I will over a reward of $15 over PayPal to anyone who figures it out and gets it to work. THANKS!!!

Take the card out & check to make sure the little lock switch is not in the locked position. I'm willing to bet that's the problem.

I have done that MANY times. I am a advanced computer user, thats not the problem. Thanks though.

Had the same problem with my Treo 650, Ended up taking it back and found out it was a manufacturers defect, mising a pin in the card slot.

Palm refused to take it back because it is a Cingular phone. Everything worked with the new one? I am thinking maybe a MMC card would work instead?

If you can read it in a card reader, try to format the SD again there, with FAT (not FAT32!!). Then, if your 650 still can't read it, looks like a bad Treo to me. Try another good SD to make sure.

If you can't even read the card in the card reader, contact the SD manufacturer. I bet it's a bad card.

Both situations happened to me before.

So it seems the phone will not accept ANY SD card?

I think Cingular should give you an exchange, maybe a refurbished one though(hate this).

Yeah I can read and write in an SD memory card reader. I am not pointing my finger at the Treo. If I go down to a Cingular store will they do it right then and there? Thanks for all the help. If it is missing a pin, would a MultiMedia Card work? (MMC)?

I formated the card for FAT under Windows XP and it can read only. It will read but not write.

I have had this problem before. It is a very simple solution!

You have to format the memory card USING THE PALM and NOT THE PC.

Put the card in the Treo 650. Select "Card Info", select menu and then "Format Card".

Formatting a memory card on a PC for use on a Treo is useless.

I spent many hours trying to figure this one out.

You are welcome.

Problem. Obviously you didn't bother reading the post. The card is read only which means that I can NOT format it on the Palm. Any more sugestions? ....

Obviously you did not read your post either! No where in your post did you say that you tried formatting the card in the Treo 650. My bet is that you wrecked the card formatting it in a MAC. For future reference, format the card in the Treo ONLY!

I tried formating in Treo first. You can't reck a card up by formating it several times.

Yes you can. Once you format the card in a PC, the card is rendered pretty dead. The same issue exists with digital cameras.

It might be that you have a bad Treo, but more likely you accidently created an unusable card. Try getting ahold of a new card and I'll bet it works.

Then my 256MB SD card from my Treo 600 would have worked?

That is not true, you can't ruin a card by formatting it in a pc or mac. I've done it with EVERY card I own and have had no problems at all. Don't you think that if formatting in a pc rendered cards 'useless', there'd be some sort of warning on the packaging? There's probably something wrong with your computer if it's ruining all your cards.

To the OP- Your treo probably has a bad card slot.

Yes, it should have, as long as it was not reformatted.

I think it is my Treo which doesn't help. I purchased it from eBay and it is Cingular branded. Should I just take it there? I was a Cingular customer untill about 3 months ago, do you still think they will replace it for me and unlock it?
