Transfering mp3s to be used as ringtones (need bitpim?)

I successfully transfered videos, pictures, and mp3s to a miniSD to be viewed on my vx 9800. Now how do I transfer mp3s to be used as ringtones? Is it possible to do this without the use of BitPim?
I thought it was possible to just create a "ringers" directory on the miniSD and drag mp3s into it. But these ringers don't seem to show up. Is my method wrong? Where do the ringtones show up on the phone?
