Will this phone be offered in the USA?

Posted by: AL9999

Yes it will, although not exactly the same shape (FCC approval showed it to have an external antenna for example).

how waterproof is this phone? is it for like.. rain.. swimming? or.. like diving?

Posted by: AL9999

Swimming. I believe it can stay underwater for 30 minutes, although I wouldn't take it diving or anything. You can even use it underwater, no problems at all.

Leaves the rugged Motos and Nokias for dead, hehe.

wow. interesting.. i'm interested in this. it'd be nice to go rowing with this. or white water rafting. hey mom.. i'm rafting down the rapids right now. say what.. oops.. you want to borrow waht? sorry.. water.. ...

I had called Casio and they told me it would not be available here. I will try them again. I have not yet met a phone that meets what I want, this one might.

Posted by: dkny_boi

Well, they teamed up with LG to sell it in south korea and it looks like they'll be with Hitachi when it starts to sell over here soon. I hope you're using verizon hehe.

I will call casio again. Maybe the people I talked to was mistaken.

looks like this got approved for verizon early last month:

http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=1636

im not sure if this is the phone you guys are all talking about - but this description says water "resistant" - not water-proof - that would mean its more for like rain or being splashed poolside rather than submersible...

EDIT - my bad - i see this link was already posted...at any rate - it still states "water resistant"

Posted by: Timsta

water resistant.. hrmm.. probably like a watch i suppose. but i can't imagine answering a phone call while swimming.. but it would be nice for the hot tub.

Posted by: AL9999

Kricket, the terms 'water-resistant' and 'water-proof' are interchanged by so many companies that it's hard to know which term means what anymore. I've seen so many watches that say '100m water-resistant', meaning they can dive down to 100 metre depths without breaking.

I'll see if I can find that FCC approval and if I can I'll post it here...

Ooooh.... a phone that can take a beating. I likes already. I've seen some people on the forum that have this phone already and I was wondering how they got it. I thought Japanese CDMA phones can't work on American networks.

Posted by: dkny_boi

Really?? That'd be interesting... I don't mind getting the verizon one later and use it on my telus account, it'd be a great phone to have out just in case.

Ok, the FCC ID code is TYKNX9200, the info page is here:

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/...;TYKNX9200'

It's going to Verizon and will be called the NX9200. You can see from the FCC ID Label PDF that it has the same battery lock mechanism as the Gz'one phone, so it's more or less the same thing.

some can, some cant. most cant as a matter of fact.

Most of the companies I deal with when they say waterproof they mean it.

In fact right now I have an piece of electronics that we are going to take backpacking setting in a sink of water, if it passes this test for 24 hours then it will go be tested in a pressure tank to simulate 25 feet. I have yet to see a product fail that was quality.

Unfortunately, the highest quality phone I have ever seen, Is not quality.

I spoke to UTStarcom at CTIA. They're handling the importing and rebranding it. If it comes to Verizon, it will probably be branded Verizon rather than any specific manufacturer.

AT CTIA we dunked it in a tank of water. That didn't seem to cause any problems.

to answer some of the other questions posted: the reason the phone's shape is different is because of Verizon's requirement that all phones have a stub antenna for better reception (not sure why the RAZR was allowed though). As for ppl using the phone already, I would guess they're using the Korean version (Korea uses the same 850 band for CDMA like Verizon, so yes in theory all Korean phones could work in NA).

Posted by: jonsidneyb

I hope it makes it here. I actually wish this phone was toiugher than it is but it seems like it will be the toughest available.

Also calling something waterproof that is only water resistant should be a crime.

To say something else, Korea also has a 1700MHz band, so if the Korean version of the G-shock phone runs on that, then it's no good for the US either. Coincidentally, there's supposed to be an auction of 1700MHz spectrum going on, so that may help with the band incompatibility (forgive me if anyone thinks that I am talking BS about the spectrum auction, this is from what I have read in another forum).

Posted by: altNz

Thanks for the correction yangj08, I didn't realize that only SK Telecom was using the 800 band in Korea and everyone else was using 1700 band until I was browsing the CDG website the other day. So only SK Telecom phones supposedly work in NA. I too have read about the 1700 band auction, but in the context of expanding UMTS, incidentally Japan is going to auction off the 1700 band for new entrants in their wireless market. So we could see more UMTS Japanese phone in the US. It would be interesting to see whether the 1700 band would be auctioned to the CDMA carriers, as we could see more Korean phones as well. One thing is for sure, the banding for just the US is going to be crazy: GSM 850/1900 UMTS 850/1700/1900; AMPS 800 CDMA 800/(possibly)1700/1900
