How do I disable buttons on phone exterior?

When the phone is closed, the buttons on the outside change the ringer and sometimes initiate outgoing phone calls. I usually carry this phone in my pocket so those buttons get hit all the time during normal movement.

How do I disable those buttons? I never intentionally press them. I open the phone when I want to call people. Needless to say, the ringer gets accidentally enabled and accidentally calls people at the most inopportune times. It is very irritating. Please help!
