Palm Treo 650 Questions

Hi guys new to the forums here,

I recently received a Treo 650 smartphone. I’m wondering if it is possible to check if the phone has already been registered as stolen or missing? Is there a way of changing the IEMI code to keep your identity private? (Does your phone and sim identity get sent out accross networks when u turn it on? would unlocking the phone prevent that?)

need some help with this guys thanks

1. Yes, if you can activate and use the phone, it has not been reported stolen or missing. You could also call the cell company and check to see if it's been reported stolen or missing.

2. No. IMEIs are permanent. No way around that, period. And they DO get "sent out" when you use the phone, all your info like number, location, etc are tied to the IMEI so phone companies keep track of you via that #. There is no way to mask your IMEI. And all unlocking does is allow you to use the phone on any provider's network, I.E.- you're not 'locked' to cingular, sprint, etc.

Did we "find" ourselves a Treo?

LOL, clearly you are in possession of stolen goods, eh?

thanks for the replies, cleared up a few uncertainties. This phone was not stolen, was given to me on a lost and found dump. I was wondering if i could get this thing working. My only real option would be to get a prepaid sim.

You can activate it prepaid or postpaid. Either way there is NO danger of anyone finding out who you are and coming after you.

yeah, im going to get a prepaid sim (i dont make many phone calls)
and to use it as a PDA.

but the potential risk of being blockd is still possible?

Posted by: Chillin

If you are just using it as a PDA there isn't even a need for a SIM at all. (and therefore no concern over it being blocked)

In Canada carriers do not block IMEIs. I can't say for sure about the states.

i still want to be able to send messages and recieve calls from it, so a sim is a main highlight on this phone for me.

If it hasn't been blocked by now(I'm assuming it's been in your or your friend's possession for a while), then it won't be. I wouldn't worry.

good point kabuki.. but what i dont want is my service provider calling me and asking me howcome ive got this phone.. would they check these things? like for example i turn my phone on and it registers "service provider" and "phone model + EMEI #" would they be alerted of such things or would they only check if it was ever reported..

Don't be so nervous! Trust me, they're not paying that close attention to you. They've got millions of customers to keep track of, they are NOT going to call & interrogate you just b/c your IMEI changes. People play SIM card-hopscotch all the time with GSM phones. If the question ever does comes up, just tell them you bought it from a friend. There's no law against switching phones, I do it with my moto & sidekick all the time. Once my phone got stolen & I bought a used one off ebay & popped a new SIM right in & had no trouble.

haha, thanks for the reasurance .. i dont think there will be a problem then.. it costs THEM money to hassle me.. i will be jumping up and down here for some advice on the palm 650.. its pretty bare!

Man, if you had any idea of all the semi-illegal stuff I've gotten away with w/my phones, whew... There are people out there with stolen phones, cloned ESNs, stolen hacked WAP, all kinds of crap & the phone companies don't even notice it. They don't actually keep track of that stuff like you think they do, they don't have "task forces" whose only jobs are to monitor IMEIs & minute usage & whatnot.

Check the Palm support page for manuals, updates, etc.

http://www.palm.com/us/support/

And select the version of your Treo and you'll get the page that is relevant to you.

For freewares, check out www.freewarepalm.com . You can also search for freewares at palmgear.com , handango.com and many other places.

And Treo 650 apps: http://mytreo.net/treofaq/SoftwareRecommended

Register and check out the various Treo forums like Treocentral.com , everythingtreo.com , mytreo.net , etc.

RealPlayer is already in ROM and will play mp3 files but it's an inferior mp3 player. You can install mp3 players like Aeroplayer or PocketTunes in RAM but they will take up RAM space. You will need an SD card to load all the mp3 files though so spending money on the largest size SD card you can afford (up to 2GB) is a good idea.

Google is your friend.
