Is it worthwhile to get additional warranty coverage on a car?

I suppose it depends on the make and how well you take care of your cars. I saw a thing where they say dealerships make about 700 on extended warranties because most cars don't need it.

yes, it's worth it if it's on lease. if anything happens to the car, say it gets into an accident and comes out as a total loss, the warranty will cover that and you'd get the value of it as if it wasn't deemed a total loss. all the costs are covered and nothing comes out of your pocket. at least that's what they told me when getting one for my car.
i don't know about under the circumstances of the car being financed or completely paid off.

I have one on my Lexus. Anyone that knows about reliability knows that Lexus is ranked #1. It's good to 100,000 miles, I used it once to get a mirror fixed that wouldn't sync with the memory position. It did save me $300. I don't buy anything without a warranty though.

For used cars that are older than 3 years old or has more than 40K miles, I would suggest yes. I have one for my car, it's a 700 bucks investments but very worthwhile because it's a 5 years old car (now 6) and had 70K miles (now 85K miles). So far, the repairs that had already done in this car is worth $1600, so I just saved myself 900 bucks.

Bought a Lubrico warranty when I bought a used PT Cruiser. Spent close to $1000 for the warranty, and when everything is said and done it will only cover a blown engine. In my opinion it was a waste, unless the engine goes. If I had looked into it more, there are other packages that cover more and have potential to be much better value. The salesman didn't offer the higher end plans which is too bad. Just find out all the facts about what the warranty will cover.'

Depends on the warranty... if it only covers things like the engine/drivetrain, then probably isn't the wisest investment since those things are usually the most reliable parts of the car (especially the engine, but you already know that) so I mean no... but if it covers other things, then it might be worth it

I got several letters from Acura about this...they wanted I think $1,700 to Extend it for another 60k to 160k/km Bumper to Bumper...with 130k on my '02 RSX...I've never had any problems *knock-on-wood*
This Tranny I'm having with...it can be done on my Driveway.
Having the HELMS MANUAL (I have it) can save you a lot...if you are willing to DIY...!!!
Now with my sister's '00 Mazda Protege, she paid the $1,700 but it was very usefull...I had several occassions that I needed to talk to the Service Manager...not easy trying to claim Warranties....!!!
