8125 shortage?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Has there been an 8125 shortage? None of the five Cingular stores in town have them and of the 15 or so resellers, only one, a major electronics joint have any. And the electronics joint wants about 50 bucks more than the no commitment Cingular price. The Cingular stores have waiting lists from 10 to 30 people long, haven't had any phones in a month and don't know when they are getting more. The T-Mo MDA, OTOH, seems to be much more readily available.

Did Cingular miss the mark on demand or is something else afoot?

Last time I checked, the 8125 had 4,000 units backordered.....Im not sure if that has changed or not.

I ordered mine yesterday from the premier site and it's already shipped and should be here Tuesday. Maybe it's "location, location, location"

Thanks for the info. I don't qualify for Premier and I don't want to extend my current agreement. Just the handset with no plan. I did see some at Best Buy today, US$579 w/o plan. I'm overseas half of the time anyway on other nets and don't want to extend the plan or add the data that I won't use that much. Looks like it's time to start looking seriously at the gray marketers...

455 shipped

One of my friends is a cingular dealer and can get them no problem. I think he just ordered like 10 for a customer. $579 is rediculous, as someone mentioned go with ebay or do some searching on the net.

On the net from reputable dealers they are US$500 to US$600 delivered. I found a couple at a local Fry's for US$489. I'd rather pay a bit more to someone like Mad Monkey Boy or Fry's than some eBay auction where I have no idea who the seller might be. Some of those eBay deals are questionable, at best. At least at Fry's (or even Best Buy) they'll be able to support the warranty or at least do a refund if the unit has issues. I called a few Cingular stores in markets I deal with in LA and Seattle and there definately are shortages.

The Hermes looks good but in a few weeks I'll be back overseas and not wanting to pull out the laptop to use UMTS for mundane tasks like email and calendar. We've been using UMTS for almost two years over there and it's great, just rather do it with a smaller device, particulary in many places where we have WiFi. EDGE will be better than breaking out the laptop to check mail.

Thanks for the pointers and tips.

They had to update the firmware on all of them because the new Cingular 3g sim cards were causing it to freeze. They should be back in stores soon

A month and a half after the 8125 was released in the US, Cingular posted it in the local paper ads. Go to a store and they have NONE! It's been two weeks since then and Cingular stores still have no 8125. I wish Sprint had better coverage in Puerto Rico. I miss the PPC6700.

Im currently staying in Caguas PR at the Four Points Sheraton and the night manager here just got his 8125 tuesday and he said he paid like $400 w/ a 2 year contract. I can find out where he got it if you want me to.

Posted by: CeluGeek

Thanks but I'm not sure I want the 8125. I'm considering the iPAQ 6515 as well and I haven't decided yet.

They are not running short in MI, I bought one, my buddy Derek (BobaFettm on here) bought one, and my buddy Jeff just bought one. Come to Michigan!

I doubt that Cingular was able to anticipate demand for the 8125.
It's been 2 months since the retail release of the 8125 and Cingular still hasn't gotten it right.

You can also try letstalk.com, they're selling it w/o contract extension for 459.

In So Cal, there was a shortage for awhile when it was originally released but it looks like stores have them now. I got mine when it first came out.

I tried a few retail stores here in Louisville KY and no one had any except the corporate stores. There are 3 in my area... Just picked mine up a few days ago...

They're available some places, it just depends on location. As of right now, though, there are orders in (from stores) for 4009, with 410 being shipped today...

The 8125 was recently switched from allocation status, so, there shouldn't be shortages at the stores.

My friend and I ordered from cingular premier 2 weeks ago and it came with no problems. We even got overnight shipping.

Keep in mind that the U.S. Census Bureau just purchased $600 million worth of these devices, so that's got to put a hurt on the supply side.

Posted by: Buck Wheat

Thanks. I got one over the weekend at the local Fry's. I talked to Cingular tonight to change my plan and the rep said they were starting to get more into the channel.

Posted by: shortdog

They can be hard to find, you just have to talk to the right rep and have them pull up your account so that they know you're not ****ing around.
