RE Signal strenght

I have 2 phones
Motorola T720 Verizon-old phone
Motorola V710 Alltel-new (to me) phone
My service is Alltel
I just switched activation from T720 to V710.
nothing was changed in the 720.
The 720 averages about 2 bars at home
the 710 averages no service right next to the 720
Occasionally I get service on the 710
sometimes (not often) when I get service on the 710 I get no service on the 720.
everything (as much as it can be) is set the same on both phones.
is there something missed or is the 710 just weaker???
