Black W800i conversion

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: biosci

Is it possible to make a W800i black. If so....how?

Any help would be appreciated.

Posted by: marktang

yeah paint it.

Posted by: biosci

What about the keys. Surely they are a bit hard to paint black and still have the nubers etc visible?

I have a black front, middle and back. I now just need to get the keys to match. Is there a front & keypad from a different model that is compatable?

Posted by: biosci

Does anyone know if the K750i front and buttons can be used on the W800i?

Posted by: xeoreg

K750i buttons are different than W800i's.

Posted by: biosci

True, but if used with a K750i front cover (if it can be attached to the w800i middle) will it work, or would I need to use a K750i ribbon keypad (electronic part of keys) as well?

Posted by: xeoreg

You can use a K750i front with the keypads on a W800i, and not need to buy the PCB board or anything. If OEM, it will be a direct replacement, fitting perfectly.

Posted by: biosci

Great...I'll give that a try. Thanks

Posted by: biosci

Does anyone know if the W810i front cover (+ keypad) and the back cover will be compatable with the middle section for the w800i?

Posted by: fieldysnutz

its not known yet, someone is currently seeing if a w810 chassis or something will fit on a w800i, its called the black white project or something, its in this forum....jus wait it out and see how it goes for em

Posted by: Darkn355

I'm the person trying it. The chassis will fit. But the rear mounting clips are alittle different. The W810i front and back will fit the W800i middle chassis but you have to modify the rear mounting clips so that it will fit the middle chasis.

The W810i front will not fit on a W800i simply because the keypad configuration is different. The W800i has a joystick and the W810i has extra buttons.

I thought I'd post some quick pics of what I did...

I found out that the back clips don't line up.

So, I shaved it off with a blade...

Before After

Next I measured the height of where the camera trigger switch should be and got a plastic stuck in that position so the camera trigger switch can be mounted there. It looks like that because i got lazy to spray it and used a marker to paint it black. I'm thinking no one will see it.

Next, the mounting point on the middle chassis also needed to be modified slightly. I needed to make a small trench for the W800i chassis. I used a blade and very tiny screwdrivers. It's abit untidy but no one will see it.

Then I fitted everything in place but found out that the camera lens cover cannot close properly. I found out that this was in it's way. So I shaved it down abit with a blade.

And now it fit's like a charm.

I'm just waiting for CNN.CN to send me the black buttons as Dennis Tam forgot to send mine. I should get it in a weeks time and put on the new housing. I've already tested it and it fits and works like a charm.

Cheers!

If you want to fit a W810i front on to a W800i middle chassis, you have to trim off one of the clips on the top as it's slightly different too. But if it's the other way around, (W800i front on to W810i chassis)
no modifications needed.

Posted by: fieldysnutz

hmm, if u can perfect this i would pay for one of your conversion chassis' all pre-modded and ready to go....this seems like a good idea, like when that guy made something to make the joystick on the w800i better and sold them...

Posted by: Darkn355

Sorry, I'm not interested in making this for other people. I'm sharing it so they can do it themselves. I'm not going to 'spoon feed' anyone this simple mod. It's not like machine tools are needed.

So i wanted to fit a w800/k750 front and back to a w810i chassis, there's no mods needed. No cutting of clips or anything?

i'd pay you $20 for your black one of you decide to keep the orange one. (if you want that is)

Hey guys. I have finished my conversion. Black front from k750i, black w800i middle bought from ebay, Not original obviously, but everything fits, and k750i back. I have a few problems after completion though...see my other thread for details (Problems after case change (reception).

Assuming I can fix the problems I have encountered I will post a pic of the finished article. I think it looks great, just what I wanted, if only my phone worked....lol.

Any pictures? I'd love to see a black walkman middle plate on the K750i faceplates! Have you pushed out the antenna pins? I had to do that then it finally kicked in with service.

Posted by: biosci

I should be able to put a pic up this weekend. My g/f bought a k750i and had it for 2 days and it had ISSUES, so went back to SE. Once she gets it back I'll have another digicam to take a pic with (normal digicam is on loan to friend OS).

I have not tried to push the pins out, but will try when I get home. Thanks for the tip.

Posted by: biosci

OK I got some pics (below)

I also fixed all the problems I had.

The camera button was fixed by shaving some rubber off the back of the button. Apparently the rubber on the k750I button was too fat.

The pin push out helped (increase of ~1 bar, but still inconsistent), but found a light sand of the contacts with super fine sand paper has improved the recetion out of sightr and haven't gone below full service (5 bars) since, much better than prior to case change.

My w800i now looks better (imo) and works better. Thaks for the help and tips everyone.

One more question.. is the quality of the housing good? Let me know asap..thanks

Posted by: biosci

The housing wasn't perfect. I needed to score a groove to fit the bluetooth thing in easily. Other than that it was fine and the quality of the finish is great.

Posted by: biosci

Forgot....

The camera cover is constructed differently and required trimming of the piece of plastic that forms the pivot for the cover in order to allow the cover button to slide.

I didn't end up using the back cover anyway, as the cover kept opening in my pocket and filling the phone with lint/dust. I went with the k750i back. I like the look better too.

did you do it? did someone do this, does it work?

Posted by: ugog

i was thinking about buying a black w800i cover off a shop but they say that it is not an original (because it obviously can't be). do you guys think i should buy it or are they known to have problems. additionally ive researched how to take off the back and front cover (the middle looks way too hard and risky); does anyone know how hard this is and does anyone have any tips?

Posted by: biosci

Unless you want white buttons on a black cover don't bother. IMO that will look pretty ordinary. If you really want a black W800i use the cover and buttons from a K750i. Everything you need to know is either in this link or others on W800i/K750i cover changes.
