Found: A way to use mp3 ringtones on T809

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: braindead5400

I posted this in another thread where someone was asking how but not many people have viewed it.

I was hoping people could test this out to make sure all T809s can do it.

1. Put the mp3 song on your phone
2. Go to incoming call settings
3. Select ringtone to see all available
4. Find song you want as ringtone (do nothing yet)
5. Highlight the selected song
6. Click middle select button to mark song (nothing will happen)
7. Press back button
8. Press save.
9. Go back and check your incoming call and it should be whichever song you highlighted.

Here is a video of how it works

I read that on the phonescoop site a while back.
It worked for me too!

Yea, I'm surprised I haven't seen it mentioned here already

hi braindead. i have a question about the background on the phone. my phone's wallpaper is really weird b/c its not fully fit the screen .. wen i set some picture as wallpaper then there are 2 white spaces on the top and on the bottom. you know why please help

THAT IS WHAT ITS LOOK LIKE

Posted by: braindead5400

The picture must be 320x240 pixels to fit properly

Posted by: adam_nguyen

Also, this is off topic but if you're sending picture messages. If your pictures are over 100kb, the phone will not send it.

To get around that, open up Picture Editor, and select Options and Select Send.

Posted by: aznboichandoi

hi. is there any software to edit the pics to 320x240 pixel?? because all of my pics are 800x600

Posted by: Mistaj0hnny

Good job! Works perfectly

You can always use Windows Paint.....

Sorry, I actually meant to say 240x320, I was thinking of videos and not wallpaper

Posted by: AwaySooner

This does work. But you must first select one of the few mp3 song as ring tone first. If you do this while your current ringtone is T-Jingle or any other sound, it wouldn't work. Good find. No more converting MP3 to 3GP.

Yeah, converting mp3 to 3gp is an extra step, but it shrinks the size, so I can fit a whole lot more songs on my phone.

You actually convert the files? Most people just rename it without converting it so will play. Converting to 3gp would lessen the quality and as far as size goes, the T809 has ample built in memory so you really shouldn't have a whole lot to worry about

Posted by: nismo54

Thanks a bunch. I asked everyone in almost ever post and they all said the same thing. Can the file name into .3gp from .mp3, you are right it does reduce the quality of the song. Thanks a bunch again. Any other tips and tricks up your sleeve?

Posted by: S_C_B

I said it shrinks the size of the file. My quality stays the same.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe that.

For that to be true, 3gp would have to be a better audio compression format (thats how you'd get a smaller size with the same quality)

Posted by: CoRupT

Is there a way to change the message tone on the D820/T-809?

Posted by: braindead5400

I don't think thats been figured out yet

Posted by: WhAtIsMoUsE

okay so am i right that just renaming files to .3gp does not change the file size or the quality?

if that is correct, what is the need to have .mp3 ringtones? sure you dont have to change the filename to .3gp, but leaving it as an mp3 adds all the steps you show?

Posted by: braindead5400

For some people its easier to use the mp3, especially if someone sends them an mp3 ringtone via bluetooth

also, all those steps I show are pretty much what you have to do to set a ringtone from the sounds menu anyway

Posted by: thatguy225

yeah i got it from you but i used different buttons cuz my monitor, i was unable to see the placement of your thumb on which button...props for you

I did a search and notice alot of ways to set up your Mp3's as ringtones.. but i havent seen the way i have done it. If you copy ur mp3's from your t flash to your phone memory and download at least one rintone from lets say t-mobile.. when you go to your sound setup and to your downloaded ringtones youll notice that the mp3 download is bold (you can select it) and the ones you copied over are grey.. well if you select the bold and save it and go back to the sound folder go to the mp3 you want to select and select it (even if it is grey) hit back and hit save.. when you go back to the sound profile you will notice its been selected!

This doesn't work for mine. Just got it and there is no mp3 already on it. Any other way to do it?

Posted by: Destrado

I am using the method explained in the the first post but when I try to preview it or actually get a call, the ringtone does not play. I have switched between three different MP3s and no dice.

Any help?

hey guys..i posted a post over this last night but it somehow got deleted..

i figured out how to instantly make a ringtone on the t809 with mp3's

the process used to be having to change the name of the song to end with 3gp..but now..alll you have to do

go to settings..sound settings..incoming call..scroll down to the "ring tone" window..press the center button..press the right button until you get to your music folder..then..even tho all the mp3's are grey..hold down the select button on whatever song you want..then press back..then get back to the "ring tone" window..and press save..then exit out..and there you are..mp3 is a ringtone..as easy as that!

sorry the post was long..but it really is worth it..

Old News as you can tell from this thread which was started back in April.

Tools>Folder Options>View>Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types

been talked about many a times in a land far far away

Posted by: nismo54

I posted a topic while back about using the mp3 songs I had downloaded to my phone. Alot of you suggest that I go to the sound setting and change the song by click on the shaded file name and click the save and save. I really worked and I was impress. Now when I tried to change the ringtone song as I would normally do, but when people call me there is no sound, but when I play it through the mp3 player on the phone it plays with sound. Anyone know whats up with that.

Posted by: Carlan600i

aznboichandoi if u want to get a picture as your wallpaper without the ugly white spots then there are 2 ways.
(dont know if its the same as D600 but...) when taking a picture, select the resolution to 240x320. that fits ur screen perfectly.
another way is to tilt your camera sideways when taking the pic, then go to image editor, select transform, then tilt it so its rightside up.
AGAIN, i dont know if its the same as a D600. but worth a try.

okay, there's a very easy way to set an mp3 file as a ringtone on a t809 without having to rename the extension to .3gp. go to MENU --> SETTINGS --> SOUND SETTINGS --> INCOMING CALL and select Ring tone. set your ringtone (if it isnt already) to valid mp3 or 3gp file. (such as remedy.mp3). now go back and highlight your mp3 file that you want as your ringtone. it is gray and you cant select it right? wrong! hit the left soft key where it says SELECT, it seems as if nothing happened. now hit the right soft key where it says BACK. now it says on the left soft key SAVE. hit save and it will say SAVED and return to the previous menu. now you have it- you just tricked t-moblie into setting an mp3 file as your ringtone without having to rename it.

the only thing i cant figure out now is this: lets say you want a different ringtone when someone else calls you. so your ringtone is a.mp3, but when your girlfriend calls you you want a different ringtone so you know who it is, so you want it as b.mp3. you wont be able to trick t-mobile into setting b.mp3 as the custom ringtone unless you rename the file as b.3gp. but that's the best you'll get unless you mod the t809 into a d820.

Another Re-post.

Genius... it worked ! Thanks... but one small problem... when I'm previewing the ringtones, they're normal volume, pretty loud actually... but after its set as a ringtone and someone calls, the volume isn't as loud. Do you know what it could be?

I know I can raise the volume of the mp3 file in Sony Vegas or Sound Forged when I'm cutting the mp3's up into ringtone sizes, but thats pretty annoying.

How can i change mp3's that i dl from my comp to my phone into a ring tone????

Posted by: f0bber

I have a question on this topic, I upload a mp3 to my phone, it works on my music playlist on my phone perfectly. The only trouble I seem to have is when I try to set it as a ring tone. It gives me a message, "Not Allowed."

How do I set it my mp3 to a ringtone?

Posted by: Silver Bullet

im having trouble witht his now.

I had my phone fo a couple of months and had changed the custom ringtone had it the whole time till I deleted everything, now when I try to set it like I did before it wont do it?? any explanations?

also before I think my custom ones were at the bottom of the list now they are in different list, that u click right a couple of times and its under music.

Please help, I cant stand T-jingle anymore

Posted by: Silver Bullet

now when I go to the .mid files under sounds, and then I can chose one of my mp3 ringtones, but they do not play. When I go to the incoming calls menu the song I want is there, but it does not play any sound???

PLEASE! help PLEASE

Posted by: Mango808

What's so hard about using the renaming method?

Seriously, I have had no problem with just renaming the .mp3 extension to .3gp and then copying it onto the MicroSD card and then choosing it as a ringtone.

Read this thread for more information.

T809 - How to use your own MP3s as ringtones

Posted by: Silver Bullet

I dunno what happened to my phone...

I change the file to 3gp, and when I go to select it, its there, and its bold (not shaded) so I can select it, but when I do no sound comes from it...?

what to do? can I like format my phone like a computer, and delete everything and get it back to stock... cuz every since I got this new memory card, its been ****ing up

Posted by: Mango808

Well you could try one of the Reset Codes below to see if it may get it back to the way it was before and or fix the problem.

*2767*3855# = E2P Full Reset
*2767*2878# = E2P Custom Reset

Posted by: Silver Bullet

thanks alot for the help, but I made it work

I selected the .3gp cuz it was the only one from "music" that was bold, and it still didnt play anything, but then I chose one of the mp3's and it works.

now I dont have to sell it, haha

and are those reset codes this phone specific? or...

What up guys! I am a noob here, so go easy on me anyway, I love the advice on the T809, exicited about using Mp3's as ringtones, but is there a way to set them to a caller. I tried the same process, just through the phone book, and then setting a ring tone, but it didn't work. Any help would be totally awesome dudes. Also, I was not quite sure how to change the file name to .3gp, I assume that yous know how so, that would be great as well.

just change the extension .mp3 to .3gp. You don't need a conevrter or a program. If you do not see the extension when you rename, simply set windows to show the extension through folder options --> View Tab --> uncheck the box "hide extension".

Posted by: Bluethumb

First, before I begin, I would like to state that I have used the search feature and attempted the fixes that I found.

My result of entering *#9999# on my phone seems to be slightly different than what I have been seeing.

My result is ET809.02 and T809UVFB3. The last part of FB3 seems to end as EJ9 for most people.

My result of *#8888# shows a H/W Version of REV1.1

I have tried to rename the *.mp3 file to a *.3gp file, but am unable upload it to my memory card in the appropriate folder, save it to my phone and set it as a ringtone.

I have tried to select a non-selectable ringtone from my Music section, and trying to save that via the Sound Settings>Incoming Call. That also does not work.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I was capable of doing the *.3gp hack a year ago when I had my older T809 before I ran it over.

Thank you.

Maybe because most of us who have/had the phone, don't have the problem due to:

1. We still have the same phone that can still use the same method we've been using that works.

2. We got rid of our t809 and moved on to another phone.

I'm in the 1. group with the ET809.02 and T809UVFB3 firmware.
