Ringtones on a Treo 650 WITH NO THIRD APPS!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jowyum

I dont kno if this has already been posted, but for those who want to put their own ringtones on their treo 650 without having to buy or go through the hassle of third apps and having their palm crash this is it.

1. take any mp3 and convert it to wav, i use cool edit pro, any wav should be fine but because of file size i use 22khz stereo and theres no sound quality loss.

2. upload it to a webspace andthen using your blazer go to that link and download it. after downloading blazer will give u the option of storing to phone or sounds in your palm and your done! all u have to do is set it in sounds after that and u have high quality ringtones without using third party apps.

Posted by: spartanman

Thats a pretty good way to do it. However, if you have bluetooth on your computer, just send the wav file directly to your treo and start using it.

Posted by: jowyum

yeah but im with TELUS and my obex is crippled

Posted by: spartanman

No need for it. I use windows and click on "send to." Not sure if every bluetooth setup will allow this.

I am at work right now so i cant try it at home till tonight, does anyone have any good wav ringtones to share?

Posted by: Rad Adam

Okay I emailed it to myself and got it downloaded to my sounds directory. I can see it when I go to select which ringer I want, but it plays nothing.

Earlier when I was trying to dl it from a site it had an error that said "Unsupported WAV file." I'm guessing its not in the right .wav format. I first converted it with audacity, then dled cool edit pro. It looks like cool edit has four different .wav 'formats':

A/mu-Law Wave (*.wav)
ACM Waveform (*.wav)
DVI/IMA ADPCM (*.wav)
Microsoft ADPCM (*.wav)

Which one did you save it as, and is that the problem?

Posted by: TWO515TY

Try the Microsoft ADPCM. Or try using DBpoweramp to convert it.

Posted by: jowyum

if your using cool edit pro use ACM Waveform, when u choose acm there an option button to change the khz, anything lower than 22 will give u noticeable sound quality loss so try and keep it above 22, thats how i do it and it works perfectly

Awesome! Thanks for this post. I'm so glad I don't have to buy the damn 3rd party BS software. Much appreciated.

I'm always paranoid they're going to 'crash' my small college bank account.

I have mp3's stored on my card I'd like to use as ringtones..but when I'm choosing a ringtone under sounds, the mp3 files are not in there. Where do I need to save them on the device for them to work, and can I even use mp3's or do they have to be Wav's?

Posted by: 860 pimpin

anyone have a good program i can use to convert mp3's to wav's on a mac?

As far as I know you can't save .mp3 files to the storage on your phone, only on a memory card. Also I don't think palm allows mp3 as a valid sound file, thus the necessity for 3rd party software.

So to answer your question, if you don't want to pay for 3rd party software, they have to be .wav files.

Posted by: scotts4388

YES that worked!! This is Awesome! I just needed to convert it to WAV, thanks soo much!

Posted by: 860 pimpin

so i ask again anyone have a good program for converting mp3s to wav's on a mac

try using itunes, its free.

Posted by: 860 pimpin

thanks stuy i had no idea that itunes let you convert to wav. now my second question is what's a good program or way to clip a song in order to make it a ringtone on a mac?

Posted by: TheStuy

you can still use itunes, to make them wav go to edit> pref> advance> change import using to wav encoder. then after you make the track> right click it> get info> options> change the start and stop time> re-import it. hope you understand.

Posted by: etard

is there a limit size to the size of the wav files for them to work? I loaded one that is 126k and it plays in preview via the Media application fine, but when assigned as a ringtone the wav file will not play.

Posted by: etard

got it down to 54k and still not play as a ring tone

Posted by: jowyum

hmmm im not sure
what type of wav format is it.
i used cool edit pro and used acm waveform
im with telus and i can download up to 2mb from my blazer

Posted by: etard

I used a program for Macs called Audacity and trimmed the ring town down to what I wanted, exported as a wav file and it plays when listened to via the Media application, but not as a ringer. WTF?

Posted by: jowyum

relax dude
i dont kno anything about mac
im assuming that its just the wrong wav format. if your program gives u the option to convert to different wav formats its trial and error. thats how i found out
with my cool edit pro on xp im using acm wavform dont kno how it works with macs

Posted by: etard

not that stressed.... believe me. "WTF" is just an expression. truly, it is of no consequence to me, jusy wondering why it will not work more than if I can make the ring tone in the end or not.

I can do mac or pc - have both - but I have a hard time believing the pc puts out different forms of wav files than a mac. yes, settings can be adjusted (bit rate, mono - stero, etc.), but it is still a wav file.

Posted by: jowyum

well there are different wav format
my program gives me like 4 of them
just play around with it, im sure ull eventually get it to work

Posted by: dapastaguy

MP3's sound better. Yes they take up room, and yes you need a 3rd party appbut, Ringo will let you stote them on the SD card, and also allow you to apply ringtones to callers for that special ID. What is the sense of having ringtone imported if you can't use them how you want?

Posted by: iDean

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/hspr-H102; Blazer/4.0) 16;320x320)

very nice!

How do you set ringtones to individual contacts

Posted by: jowyum

your gonna need 3rd party apps for that
the way i explained is just for the internal sounds app, and it doesnt allow ringtone per contact without third party apps

Posted by: Surfermobile200

hmm i convert wav, hotsync it to my mobile and when i look under tones nothing comes up? And i cant even locate the files to delete them(they are there but cant touch em) i have to format my card..

Posted by: Gmoney82

How do you convert mp3 files to wav in cooleditpro and put it on your phone?

That's not true you can easily assign ringtones to individual contacts.

Here how:

Assign them as a favourite. (you have 70 Favourites so that should be plenty) simply select "Ringtone". done.

Posted by: Zeitgeist

I wish Palm would release a firmware addition that allowed mp3s to be recognized naively. It's not like the hardware doesn't have the capacity to play them; however, I guess it would put the guy who created Ringo out of a job.

It would also be nice if someone's photo could come up when they were calling. My old Sanyo 8100 did this 4 years ago.

Posted by: jowyum

yeah just found that out
have to save the contacts in favorite pages and then u can assign each a different ringtone

in cool edit pro open your mp3 file, crop the part u want click save as and hit the drop down bar where it says mp3, choose acm waveform and pick your rate anything lower than 22khz will result in quality loss

Posted by: Markymark26

how do u send it to your phone

i have FileZ installed on my treo 650 from sprint (usa) and i managed to get the wav files onto my phone but i dont know how to get them into the ringtones directory -- where does the treo keep the native ringtones is it accessile using FileZ even?

Posted by: sappr07

Will this work with th 700p also. I can't check right now since I'm at work. Thanks.

Posted by: execdec

Anyone able to convert a wav or mp3 file to a midi format? If so, you can then upload the mid file into the versamail alerts pdb, and use additional sounds instead of the standard 7 they give you...

Thanks!

Posted by: Fatal99

Alright, I have a file made into a wave with nero as an 8 bit mono pcm wav. I emailed it to myself and have figured out how to save it to my SD card but can't for the life of me find a sound folder to put it in. I have FileZ but don't really know much about it besides installing prc files straight from my SD card. Help? search button seems to be disabled

Posted by: Fatal99

Nevermind, I figured it out. Had to select the viewer as sounds rather than mmwave. Anyways it works now, and my phone rings to the beat of GTA San Andreas....

Posted by: Surfermobile200

how do u edit ur contacts so u can assign ringtones/photos of em?

Posted by: Rad Adam

I'm fairly certain you need one of the 3rd party ringtone manager apps to have custom ringtones for specific contacts.

If you edit the contact in the normal contact list, you can add a picture there, which will come up as they call in to your treo. To add a custom ring to a particular contact, you'll need to go to the phone main page, press the top right button that brings down the dropdown menu, chose edit favorties pages, then create a new page by tapping an open box. You can then chose to add a telephone number, then it gives you the option to chose a specific ringtone for that number. Hope this helps.

The treo won't let you do it this way. You either have to email it to your treo through versamail, or find it on a webpage to download from your treo internet browser. It when then prompt you to convert into memory, then you will be able to chose it as a ringtone.

Additionally, this is an incredibly easy app to convert mp3 to wav on your phone, do no 3rd party app is needed at all. No more fussing with converting files, this works so easy. Go to http://www.mood-indigo.info/testcase/MiniTones.prc (it may not be there long) Save the prc file to your desktop, then hotsync it into your treo. If you have mp3 files on your SD card, it will automatically find them, and you chose to convert them, and BAM, its done.

Posted by: Rad Adam

That program is so freakin' rockstar! Instaled it right from the link onto my phone.

Thank you, and nice post.

Posted by: Surfermobile200

ahh cheers had to add my address book to my phone! anyhow i need a java program to run games... any suggestions? got ringtones working too .. thanks for the help guys

Posted by: Nokstar

ok..i got the ringtone in my sounds...but it only plays like 1 second of the audio instead of the full 8 seconds that i made it...why?

Posted by: kamyre

OK, I am no stranger to making ringtones but this isnt working for me.

I convert the MP3 to WAV with musicmatch
crop to 30 seconds with Windows Sound recorder and attempt to upload...uploader says the file is too big.

So I go back, after cropping I reconvert the cropped wav again using DBPower Amp (this is how you do it for nextel phones)
This time it gives me a jump code, when I download the file my treo says it does not support the file....what now?

Posted by: KJRcrew

i just wish somone would make a half decent mp3 ringtone software that was free...i really hate spending money when im gonna upgrade my phone almost every 2 years..ahh well i guess ill have to wait..

Posted by: Connectz

Okay, I feel really stupid right now. I know how to make ringtones but I am having touble getting them onto my Treo 650. I tried emailing them to myself using gmail but that didn't work.

Posted by: Connectz

I don't have a memory card yet. And whenever I try to download a wav file from my gmail, it only gives me the option to store the file on a SD card. Is there any way to store it on the phones memory?

Posted by: atranox

so all i have to do to play the ringtone i want is to just convert it to a wav. file and then upload it to the treo, right? then when i go to the cell phone ringer settings, it should be there?

http://mytreo.net/downloads/details-1053.html

this is alot more simple for you..

install minitones.. and than copy what ever mp3 you want onto your sd card... than run minitones, and just follow the steps and it will auto store the mp3 song onto the treo itself.. plus with minitones you can choose which part of the song you want it to play too..
