My New Treo 650 not as fast in browsing as my Sidekick.

I had a Sidekick II with T-Mobile on prepaid service and I used it for data only. Since I use Cingular for my voice plan I decided to just sell my Sidekick II and get a Treo 650 so I can just use 1 device.

I just got my Treo 650 today in the mail and I immediately called Cingular and added the 19.99 Unlimited Media Net package on my account.

I've been playing around with it for the past 3 hours and so far my speeds have been very slow!

According to broadbandreports.com/mspeed, my connection speed is:

33 kbit/sec
31.016s latency
28.218s d/l time

Now I'm not sure what it means but I know that's very slow, right?

I'm in Houston, Texas (zip 77090) so I figured that it would be a lot faster since I'm in a 3G area.

But I've only tried surfing at home and I normally get spotty coverage here so I'm wondering if that might be a factor. If I don't get better speeds away from home I'm definitely going back to my prepaid Sidekick.

That's seems wayyy unreasonably slow. Somethings up. try calling cingular data department. make sure you've got the right settings for your phone.

If I call the Cing data dept I don't want them to say, "Hey, why are you on a treo with the 19.99 data plan?"

It's Cingular branded, so shouldn't the settings be right? I mean, if they weren't I shouldn't even be able to connect to the net, right?

well just cause your in a 3g area doesnt mean your gonna get 3g speeds you need a utms device. as for the speeds test there might be alot of congestion in the area causing it to go slow. there were a couple of threads going around(not saying there true) that cingular some how is making all the people with pda, speed to go slow if you were using a media net package. take that as you will. . one thing you might wanna due is uprgade the rom and clear the cache often, although the speeds you quoted are very low were talking about gprs slow

they can't make you change data plans, *Express Yourself*. The biggest difference in both the $19.99 plan and the $39.?? plan is "corporate" vpn!

I've done the speed test in 6 different cities in Mississippi and the city I reside in is faster than the rest.

About what type of speeds should I be getting?

Now it's:

62 kbit/sec
2.828s Latency
15.43s d/l time

Posted by: SHoTTa35

yeah dude, you only have a EDGE device which varies by signal level and class. A Class 10 device will get full edge speeds which i think is like 200Kbps max. 3G phones go to 700Kbps i think and HSPDA later will be like 1.4Mbps or something (already in some areas)

Now, your Treo is a Class 10 but like i said it matters with signal strength and the capacity in your area.

To SHoTTa35 (for some reason the "quote" button isn't working for me:

Well then I guess I'll have to try it outside of my house. Thanks.

Posted by: mvaughanusm81

112 kbit/sec
2.517s latency
16.7s d/l time

I hover around the above numbers, the highest I've hit was 138. Never have reached the "max". Inside or outside the house! Try different times of the day!
I read about the HSPDA, but was wondering what the difference was going to be, thanks for the speed info, SHoTTa35!

If you coverage is poor, your speeds will be too. With good coverage you should be able to get much better results. In either case, you would need 3G to see speeds I think most of use would find agreeable for web browsing. I have had a Treo 650 for well over 2 years now and have used it for web surfing the whole time. I love the device and it great for surfing I think, but it is just too slow (by no fault of its own). Give me a 3G HSDPA Treo and I will be very happy!

I have gotten speeds in the area of 700-950Kbps using several different HSDPA devices. I believe the current max on HSDPA is 1.4Kbps, but that is not user data, that includes the overhead as well if I am not mistaken. I think user data max is closer to 1Mbps. Supposedly 3.6Mbps HSDPA devices will be out later this year. A 7Mb device has already been tested by Nortel and Quualcom (don't hold your breath waiting for that one).

I think all the 3g cell sites are class 6, being capped at 3.6mbps for the time being. I don't think we'll see 7mpbs+ soon

Hmm, that is the first time I have ever heard a site referred to as a class anything for data. It wasn't anything I had ever thought about before. The sites should be current with the specs. from what ever UMTS rev. they are running. Usually it is the handsets that lag behind. But I agree with you 7Mb is not going to happen any time soon, if at all (there are transport costs for the carriers to consider as well - not to mention can you even find me anything that could take advantage of those speeds, the internet is so laggie).

Sorry, I should have worded it differently. I meant to say that I believe only class 6 speeds are supported as of right now.

The treo 650 is just slow at rendering pages as well. For me, it made it almost unusable to visit a variety of different sites. On my 8125 (still on cingular), web pages load a LOT faster, especially when it is graphic intensive (such as forums).

Posted by: helpermonkey

Maybe try another browser?

Posted by: eimajuno

The 8125s browser blows the treo out of the water.

That's the thing, the blazer browser renders pages so slowly. Install the opera browser on the treo 650 and give it a whirl. It flies with edge.

yeah i get hte same problems...my speed is around 80kbps and the web pages don't load as fast as i would like them to load. i havent really been keeping up with the release of phones and all that, when did the 8125 release?

Posted by: huntel2

On my sidekick I'm getting 128 kbits/sec

Posted by: dabum

the test doesnt work for hte sk because the sidekick relays the webpages and stuff off of the danger server....at least thats what i think. it used to say that i had high speeds when i didnt.

Your Sidekick is a Class 10 GPRS device that goes through a proxy. That 128kbits/sec you're getting is from the testing server to the proxy. =P

Xiino is not the greatest at rendering pages, but it's certainly a heck of a lot faster than Blazer. Opera Mini is also very fast. I only use Blazer when I have to have things render properly and don't want it to go through a proxy. (I'm just not comfortable sending my bank account login through Opera's servers...)

I tried the "faster" browsers on my Treo 650 and the pages still took a while to load, and many just didn't look right.

PIE on my 8125 renders them very well and very quickly.

that looks like normal, old school GPRS speed, not EDGE speed.
