Hello, I'm a new user of windows mobile and I just purchased a Cingular 8125 Phone with windows mobile 5.0, Just yesterday I setup my phone to prompt for a passcode on return if the device went to stand by mode for more than 5 minutes. The passcode I setup was a alphanumeric combination and I tested it and it was working yesterday. This morning after trying to access my phone again I was prompted with a menu to input my passcode in, but its not longer accepting a alphanumeric combination, but only a 4 digit pin code. So what I did to test if I'm sure the password is what I think it is, I connected the phone to my laptop, and Active Sync prompts me to enter in a password. I typed in my alphanumberic passcode and it accepts it and begins to sync the phone.

So right now where i'm at is I can access the contents of the phone from my laptop, but I can't access the phone directly. Has anyone elese run into this problem? Is there something I can do to reset the password from my computer or input a alphanumeric passcode from a numeric pad menu?

I know that I can hard reset the device, but I spent all yesterday changing my sim contacts to wm5 contacts and I really don't look foward to setting up all my voice tags again. Please help me out.

Thanks/

Mod: Please excuse me for double post.

if you've sync'd the device then if you hard reset it and sync again your contacts should be fine *i believe*.I'm not sure how to get around what you were asking though.

Does sync save all your preferences?

Ok i tried to hard reset it by holding the two top buttons and presseing the reset button, but doesn't seem to be reseting the device, it only reboots it and im prompted with the password screen again.

Wait, hold the phone! Are you sure it's not just asking for the pin for the mobile part of the unit, i.e. the sim card?

I don't think so, It says enter password, then gives me a hint, which is the hint for the alpha numeric password.

It doens't seem to want to hard reset...

I take it you're entering it in the 'same' case that you created it?
Nonetheless, turn it off, take the battery out, replace it, then power it on. Once back on, try the 'master reset' again...

I can't even enter it in as the same case, as there is only numerics that I can press, and not letters. I will try that method of reset once again.

Turning it off, taking the battery out, let it sit for 1-2 minutes, then put the battery back in, powerered it on, and tried Hard reset by pressing the two buttons at the top, holding it down, and pressing the reset button, resets the phone but i still get the password screen. Does anyone know if theres a way i can reset it from my laptop via usb cable?

I don't have one to test. But, I know when you connect something to active sync, if it has a password on the device it will ask for it. And, I know you've done/tried this, but, connect it to the pc, enter the password - hopefully it works - then open active sync, go to FILE. See if there is a password option or something relating to security there...

Nah i wish active sync had more functions. I'm kind of lost here. I might have to end up just calling cingular support.

As far as the hard reset part goes, you have to continue holding the two buttons after you press and release the reset until you get the screen that asks you to press the send key. Many people release them too soon the first few times.

harice, try what genetru said, and let us 'all' know if it worked! I can't wait, am on the edge of my seat...

I figured out why it wasn't hard resetting, in the instructions it says to hold down the comm and voice button then press the reset button and HOLD it down. Finally after holding it down and not letting go for 10 seconds it finally rebooted and came up with a black screen that said to press send to reset to factory settings. Lesson here is to read the f'n manual to the i's and t's! and maybe the p's as well.

Thanks all for chiming in.

ps: lets hope after you've reloaded etc that all works well...
