Frustrated: no apps work, even w/app unlock

I'm getting really frustrated with my Cingular 2125 (WM5). Practically no apps seem to work on it; I understand there is limited compatibility with Windows PocketPC apps, but virtually none of the WM5-certified apps (like Opera) work. They all crash the phone.
I've used the Regedit program to app unlock the phone and I still can't get anything to work.
HKLM/Security/Policies/Policies (press Values)
00001001 = 2 --> 1
00001005 = 16 --> 40
Is that all there is?

First of all, you are using the Smartphone version of the programs, right? Because the ones designed for Pocket PC will generally not work on Smartphones. The reason I ask is because there is no "WM5 certified" version of Opera for Smartphone - only Opera 8.5b2 for Pocket PC.
Secondly, what exactly do you mean by "crash". The reg tweaks you mention is simply to allow programs to be installed. So if your programs are installing fine but just not running properly then you're good to go.

I wasn't really aware of a difference in WM5 versions. I guess that would explain why a lot of stuff isn't functioning.
And by "crash" I mean that the phone becomes unresponsive and I have to remove the battery.

Yeah, sounds like you're just trying to run Pocket PC apps.
Try www.handango.com and others to find Smartphone specific apps.

Ugh, $20 for an IM client.
Thanks for the link though.

You "should" be able to run Yahoo Instant Messenger.
It's free (as ALL IM software should be).
It works on my Audiovox SMT5600, which runs Windows Mobile 2003.
You can either do it via text messages, or a web browser.

I was hoping for an AIM client. Agile runs, but it doesn't fill the screen (hence looking goofy and being hard to read).

AOL claims they support AIM on the 2125 w/Cingular...

Try this link too...

(They also claim they support the 8125... not having either phone I've no idea if it really works. It may ALSO be through a browser instead of a dedicated client.)

Ugh, more pay software. It kinda bugs me that all this stuff is free on my Windows PC, but for a smaller and less complicated version I have to pay $30.

There's a decent amount of freeware/shareware out there (although I try to avoid shareware).
http://www.smartphony.net/software/softwareindex.htm <- Older but good stuff
http://www.airfagev.com/downloads.asp?cat=Applications <- 2nd line of description will tell you if it's freeware or shareware
http://maniac.fschreiner.de/compone...tpage/Itemid,1/ <- Cool auto key lock/screen saver/missed call notifier, and a few other goodies
http://www.gpcarreon.com/ <- This guy Blogs about all things Smartphone, good software links can be found here.
http://www.spv-developers.com/forum...display.php?f=5 <-Software Developers forum, kool place to pick up info on new/beta software and new releases, check the Smartphone Applications forum
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?act...iewcat&cat_id=2 <- Nice Freeware collection and a good Smartphone forum, (requires registration to download).
That should get you started. As for AIM for Mobiles being pay, sorry I didn't relaize it was. Why anyone would would choose AIM over YIM even if BOTH were free I have to admit is beyond me though. Also I noticed that GTalk (Google's IM App) recently released a BlackBerry version, so perhaps soon we will see a Smartphone version (I hope... GTalk is great!)
(I found all the above links reading here, modaco.com and using Google.)
*** Edit***
Can you use Meebo from the web browser on a Smartphone (I currently don't have a dataplan (believe it or not) so I can't test it).
I've used it before (from my PC at work) and it worked okay.
Supports AIM, ICQ, YIM, Jabber, MSN and Gtalk all from within a web browser.
http://www37.meebo.com/ or http://www.meebo.com/
There's also http://www2.goowy.com/ Same sort of thing, never tested it though.
