A screen as sharp as sharps

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jowlie

I currently have an almost dead gx20 and wanted to upgrade my phone, but dont want to downgrade the screen, dont really like the look of the 902/903 although I'm sure theyre quality -any ideas for a replacement phone which wont leave me craving my old gx20 screen?

(not necessarily a Sharp)

Any Help greatly appreciated

the Samsung D600 has a VERY nice screen
super bright and vivid, but thats if you want to go in that direction

Posted by: john0213

i don't know... i kinda like the samsung too, especially the design of the D600. I've been playing with it for quite a while since the store i worked in has quite a few of them. I would've suggest you to go with panasonic V-series, they are the closest competitor on screen with sharp. as for samsung... i don't recommend it, i mean i really love the design, but the UI just makes me feel strange about it.... i don't like the samsung's interface at all~~

Posted by: Timsta

oh man.. ur in a jam... panasonic has a pretty good screen. u might wanna check out xcute dv2.. but its not a great phone overall.. good cam.. good screen. i'd say.. stick with sharp... considering ur in the sharp forum lol.

Posted by: jowlie

The newer sharps are ugly and chunky and the D600 has nothing on the Gx20s clarity

Posted by: Box215

wow, getting hung up on screen quality? once you switch to a new phone, youll adjust and it really wont be much of an issue. I went from an s700 (qvga) to an N70 (176x208), it really wasnt much of a big deal

Posted by: pibrahim

Get the 904SH - screen on that beats anything on the market.

Of course, you might think that looks chunky too, but I personally think the phone looks freaking awesome :-P

Posted by: Timsta

the screen on the 904SH is probably one of the best, if not the best screen on a phone on the market... its definitely worth looking at. but if you don't like the design.. then its a really hard purchase.

Posted by: jowlie

Yeah but the pictures look so tasty on a sharp its still a big difference to my friends N70

Posted by: Timsta

the new nokia n80 is kind of hot lookin imo. not the fanciest of all phones.. but still looks pretty good.. too bad its a nokia... with all their wierd designst he past few years.. really made phones look ugly

Posted by: jowlie

hmm nokia does seem to be the most mentioned to me - what happened to other brands being at the forefront of design - or does my rusty knowledge of phones need updating

Posted by: john0213

ah... i would say sony ericsson is a very popular brand too, but since you are on this forum, i wouldn't suggest you go on to a sonyericsson. it's not that their design is not good, but the design just seems too playful and not so appropriate with a lot of the situations. i can't imagine pulling out a white w900i while wearing a suit in a formal conference meeting. to me, the design of sonyericsson seems too.... teenager, i guess~

Posted by: kaizoku_san

Nokia is the most mentioned to you because North America has so many Nokia and SE fanboys, it gets annoying after a while. The quality of their screens/cameras is nowhere near that of Sharp's quality.

While Nokia brags about their "oooo ahhhh" Carl Zeiss lens, Sharp just sits back, confident that theirs beats out all others.

And the screen.. well, you've seen a Sharp screen.

thats very true..haha..i've yet to see a GSM phone that beats out Sharp's camera and screen quality

Yep.. pretty sad, I was just reading the "Nokia N80 vs. Sony Ericsson K800: 3 megapixel shootout" article over at gsmarena.. the K800 pics look really nice, but seriously, it took them a LONG time to catch up to Sharp. The 903SH came out what.. last August, was it? Something like that.

And even with their super special Zeiss lens, the Nokia camera is still the loser, just like the N90 was when it came out (man, that one took blurry pics, not sharp at all).

Nice effort Nokia/SE, but you gotta do better than that to win over the people who are smart enough to buy a Sharp.

Posted by: longcu817

I agree with the both of you, but even the K800 pics aren't as sharp and vivid as the 903s. I think Nokia and SE are overrated and their fanboys think they are the best, no matter how we try to prove them wrong. I do have to admit that the K800 has a very nice looking flash, almost like the ones on digital cameras.

hah i just read that review, and the whole time i was thinking "they should've thrown in a sharp 903 for comparison

all these guys talking about theri sony being the king of the world. that thing doesn't even have optical zoom.. what a joke.. just wait..

because i said that.. i'm gonna get a warning and half of hte sony fanboys are gonan come in here and flame

Ohhhh! Thats bad news oh and btw I'm in the UK

i totaly agree the sharp cams is alot better and that optical zoom is very very useful i borrowed a Nokia N90 before, w/ the Carl Zeiss 2mpx ... it was even worse then my Sharp 802 i had the pics turned up to be blurry and flat in colour... at 1st i thought i set it on low quailty but no its like that *gasp*

and S.e. w800 usin that as my backup fone has a better cam then the nokia but still no up to par w/ the 902

sharp optics is just superb and still to this day i dont think that any camera phone is better... maybe that samsung forgot model # but it had a 5mpx? not sure ...

Posted by: break-r

^ i think that was a CDMA LG phone..someone on hofo had it and posted pics right?

I'm in need of a new phone as the GZ200 was given to a friend.
What are my options??

just to correct something, the n80 does not have the carl zesis. I, for one, was looking to buy a n80 before, but i mean spending over CDN$1,000 and not getting a carl zesis optic just seems ridiculous to me, not to say they don't have mechanical autofocus and optical zoom, i say nokia is being a little bit cheap this time. I'm not a fan boy of any brand because i use flip, swivel, bar...like i keep changing around so to not get myself bored i really coem to appreciate the video recording of the n70 that i'm using now, but then sharp's screen and camera beats it to the hell~~

that's the reason i come to the dark side~~ =..="
LOL~~

Posted by: Timsta

well... even if it had a carl zeiss lens.. it doesn't make a difference.. the lens that nokia introduced for their phone was just pure junk.. they just use the poor guys name and everyone went gaga and then found out hte lens wasn't up to carl zeiss standards.. and now sony's jumped the bandwagon and introduced cybershot.. and again... less than good standards

Posted by: azn_boi_128

hahah thats so true its like putting a mercedes logo on a chrysler and selling it calling it the 300C... o wait they did do that

Posted by: Timsta

yup exactly.. when you buy a jaguar.. you are purchasing a ford engine.. its horrible.

hahah... wait this isnt the car forum

neways back on topic i never expreiced many cellphones for the past yrs other then sharp but i do know if there is one it'll be samsung's D600 it has 320 X 240 screen and its quite bright i'm sure a lot ppl would agree the best screen now is the sharp 904 but for those who just dunt have the money to get one well a samsung is a bit cheaper but then again 904 at 600 bux isnt too much

Posted by: Timsta

but d600 kind of just sucks tho.. getting old that phone man... OLD

Posted by: break-r

i had a D600, screen is beautiful..although its alot smaller than sharp 903/904

Posted by: john0213

is it me or do everyone find that the D600 menus doesn't go as smooth as other phones does~~ btw, i hate samsung's UI~!!!!!

Posted by: Timsta

talking about ui.. motorola's is pretty bad too.. and nokia's is just confusing to me

Posted by: jowlie

Yeah, the D600 is off my list, when I'm changing from a sharp its not an impressive uprade at all, looking at 904SH would it work over here (UK) (I mean the "SH")

Posted by: jowlie

Have Sharp fixed some stupid faults like e.g.

-Alarm doesnt go off when the phone is off
-Have to scroll through pictures manually (i.e. go "Back" out of each one)

Things dont seem to have progressed as far as I would have imagined by now!

they fixed the alarm for the newer phones 802 and up (703, 902, 903, 802,804,904)
but the pics scroll.. yea... but i remeber in my gx-32 it took a long time to load the thumbnails but now the new phones metioned above is alot faster =D

btw timsta i hate moto's they havent change nokia's is odd SE looks the same for all phones and samsung i just dont get.... sharp's well they made improvements but mroe can be done =D but i dont think any UIs is really "the best"

Posted by: jowlie

what about putting words into the t9 dictionary

Posted by: Noemi

How about Toshiba phones? I'm amazed with the screen quality of the 803T.. And thats coming with a guy who thinks 902SH was the next best thing after the sliced bread.. ;p
And the UK version lets you scroll though the pics, add words to the T9 dict, MP3 playbacks, etc.. Sure the camera may not be at the same lever as Sharp phones but.. No suprises there.. It's not a Sharp phone..

Posted by: jowlie

So is everyone basically saying no-one is at Sharps level yet? What about a rival for the 902 specs cause my budget wouldnt be getting me a 904 anythime soon

Posted by: pliu

Guys, I am a Sharp fan and all, but wouldn't someone agree that the current Panasonic screens are better than the 903 and even the 904?

Posted by: Timsta

panasonic screens are actually really good.. its too bad their phones just plain suck.

it really depends i guess.. the pana screens are really quite nice.. hard to compare with 16 million colour screesn tho lol

Posted by: john0213

i 've read quite a few articles about the screen of the panasonic, many people comment that panasonic has a stunning number on spec sheet as it is 16 millions, but comparatively, sharp has a better screen quality even with only 262k because they use their own technology call something lcd silicon somethign, lol i totally forgot. Again, on that specific articles, it says because that specific technology, it makes the sharp screen works different than a normal 262k screen. people end up comparing the two side by side and it has came up that sharp has better screen because of that single technology. So yes, sharp, as screen wise will definitely be the best with no doubt, but i would way panasonic will be the only competitor that come close to sharp, other being not worth to mention at all.

i beleive its CGS silicon

too bad the 903 doesnt have it =(

Posted by: Timsta

mmm.. but panasonc phones are just poor inquality i think. the gd87/88 was their best phone imo. i didn't like any of their other phones

Posted by: jowlie

So the verdict is - no screen better than Sharps' on the UK Market atm

Posted by: Timsta

yah. i'd have to concur with that. GO sharp go!

Posted by: jowlie

Ok and is it entirely possible to use all Bluetooth, InfaRed and all transfering data from phone to PC and vice-versa functions? Watching movies, filming at reasonable quality for an unrestricted period of time and then transferring this to a PC (Providing mini SD will accomodate). It's Just my GX20 seems very restricted by Vodafone and I wouldnt want to flash a 903 with any new software.

Can anyone point me in the direction of menu screenshots (903) etc. so I have an idea as to how differnt the UI is?

Posted by: break-r

yep, everything works fine on my 903.
havent had any difficulty transferring anything yet.

i wouldnt recommend the jap firmware on the 903 though. But thats just me

Posted by: tuyulaneh

I had a sharp 903 and the screen is absolutelly stunning. But the best screen on the market that i had used is definietely the HTC universal aka o2 xda exec!! The screen is absolutely stunning due to the size and color clarity! AMazing!!

Posted by: Box215

@jowlie, here are some pics i took of the menu. This is the euro fw, so if you bought the 903, it would look the same for you.

Thankyou Box- Very helpful -could you show some photogtraphs on the screen an a photo of the thumbnail menu? - I just have a few more questions though.
Thanks for everyones advice so far, all has been heeded & appreciated!

*Can all data pictures/video/music be transferred from another phone and vice-versa (including nokia etc)?

*Are Themes fully compatible with ALL firmware versions?

*What is the battery life like with heavy mp3 use?

*Are the flashing lights on the outside useful and noticable?

*What are the photo/video editing tools like?

*Can you add words to the dictionary

*Can you extract a number from a message & "ADD" it to a contact - one very annoying glitch with the gx20

JUST BUY THE PHONE ALREADY!!!! jkjk
i'll try my best to answer some of these questions, i'll leave the rest to timsta

i havent had any problems bluetoothing items to other mobile devices
the flashing lights are good, i set mine to flash the little light on the side rather than the huge light on the back for a missed call/new message
and yes you can add words to the dictionary

Posted by: Timsta

damn you breakr lol. sigh... there was sooo many questions.

1) yes
2) no (you can't load themes)
3) very good. kevobodian posted his mp3 life times awhile back. search for a thread regarding mp3 and 903
4) yes. and yes
5) you use wahtever you want, so it depends on you if you like the tools or not
6) yes
7) i forget, someone will have to confirm that

Posted by: Box215

yes, you can extract a number from a text and add it to your contacts

Posted by: Timsta

cool.. saved. thx

Posted by: jowlie

but can you add it to an existing contact

Posted by: Timsta

yah.. just edit existing contact. when u do that

nice nice hahha maybe i should post mine... its euro w/ a japanese mix

Posted by: dimension6

I had the opportunity to try out the Samsung 5-megapixel phone at the Samsung store in NYC (Time Warner building, Columbus Circle). It had a nice display, but I remember it feeling like a camera with a phone attached...
It's also truly convenient to be able to rotate the screen of the 903.

Posted by: Timsta

samsungs are truly innovative.. can't wait.. till we get the chocolate phone and what not over here from them and LG.

too bad they do really cost an arm and a leg to get tho

Posted by: jowlie

cool, i just need to check a few of my annoyances have been ironed out

Posted by: jowlie

Any photo thumbnail menu shots or small video examples from the 903 that you guys have transferred 2 PC?

here ya go

its not a beta unlock. its hybird

Posted by: jowlie

Cheers box!
Can you scroll though the photos at large size?
Are the flashing lights useful & noticable?
Are videos/pics compatible with other phones -in other words will I have a problem bluetoothing ANY form of data to/from a UK 903?

Posted by: Timsta

1) no
2) yes
3) well. it really depends what you are sending over. certain file types supported

Posted by: Timsta

you can send.. but maybe not be able to receive

Posted by: jowlie

Argh, u still cant scroll though large size- what a let down!!
So my mates with SE & Nokias wont be able 2 bluetooth pics/vids either!?

Posted by: Timsta

well they can bt you pidcs and videos.. the videos have to be compatible tho. pics should be fine. unless they are huge.

well u can kinda scroll.... once your in the picture mode press "#" for the next pic and "*" for the previous pic...

btu not u cant do that at full screen just... in the thingy mode
like in this pic posted by Box215
http://img305.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img04038wu.jpg
just press "#" to the next pic

it should mostly work ... but it has to fit inside your phone's memory so let say yopu only have 3 mgs left in your phone memory you cant transfer anything over 3.1mgs, cause the phone cant automaticly save the file to the memory card it has to be placed in the Phone's memory 1st

so as long as u got the room u can do

Posted by: Timsta

well you only get 8 megs of room in the handset lol.. so ur pretty limited

Posted by: jowlie

Well I'd get a 2GB Mini SD no question s as long as it takes that memory into account its ok! When you say that # & * scroll though,do you mean at thumbnail view?? What is wrong with sharp, this is a major issue 4 me

Posted by: Timsta

umm... you can use the 2 gig memory card.. but u won't be able to read it in your pc after usage in yoru phone. keep that in mind

Posted by: jowlie

what do you mean "in my pc" - looking at data on the card without the use of the phone?

Posted by: Timsta

yah..
exactly. you wont' be able to use it with your pc

Posted by: azn_boi_128

yea lots of probs w/ 2 gigs

Posted by: Timsta

well i think its not that they don't want to support it.. cause it does.. but their file writing system does something to the memory card so it won't be used with the pc

Posted by: jowlie

Do you mean in a standard SD card reader?? It seems absolutely unbelievable that if I took pics saved them to the SD there's NO way I can look at them on the PC even if the card's in the phone and the phone's connected?

Posted by: Timsta

no.. u won't see theo folders. believe it or not.. tahts the case. its been reported over and over and over again.. countless of times
