Detailed instructions on how to flash your W810 (Fix the dropped call problem)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: markl_farkl

Looking through the threads on this is forum (and DavinciTeams) about flashing the W810 is painful to say the least. The DavinviTeam software documentation is scattered and confusing. I created these instructions for those of you who were getting frustrated about this – like I was. The most helpful post on flashing on this forum came from the user Paco. Thanks Paco for leading the way!

A quick history on how I got here- I got my W810 for LALA West on EBAY last week. It was running R4CF002 firmware. Like many of you I could not talk on it for more than 5 minutes without dropping a call. I am using Cingular in San Jose,CA. After flashing my phone the dropped call problem went away!

The software to I used to flash my W810 is free, but you need to pay for “log accounts” to use it. It will cost you one log account ($12 US) to flash your W810.
The cable referenced as “DCU60” is the USB cable that was shipped with your W810. You use this cable to flash your phone with the new firmware.

The steps to take –

Buy a DavinciTeam log account-
1. Go here and purchase one log account.
2. After you pay, go back here then enter your paypal E-mail under “Lookup your (lost) login detail(s) + status”. Your Login and Pass is then E-mailed to you. For some reason mine was not automatically sent until I did this. Perhaps I’m just impatient.

Download all the stuff you need to Flash your W810–
1. Create a directory on your C drive named W810
2. Download the USB driver for the DCU60(USB cable for your phone) and unzip it in this directory.
3. Download the W810 Client1594. DO NOT USE Client1595! You must use client1594 or IT WILL NOT WORK! Unzip and save the client in the W810 directory.
4. Download the following files from this site - W810_R4CE012_MAIN_GENERIC_HN.DVT and W810_R4CE012_FS_AMERICA1.DVT save them in the W810 directory

Install and test USB driver/DCU60 Cable.
1. Connect your phone to the PC using the USB cable. When your PC detects the phone and prompts you for a driver point to the c:\W810\USBFlash folder. If your computer has already installed the driver try right clicking on the EPIUSB.INF then select install. (You might need to reboot after doing this) Other suggestions on how to load the driver on systems that have already loaded the default driver would be helpful.
2. Turn your phone off (you don’t need to worry about removing the SIM or memory cards yet)
3. Plug the DCU60 cable into your computer
4. Open the client1594 program. (Click on the Text “Sony Ericsson flasher/unlocker v15.94” this is a useless launcher that just confuses users in my option)
5. Under “Port Settings” Select DCU60 in the drop down.
6. Click on the “Read CID/Test cable” button
7. While holding down the “C” button on your phone plug the cable into the phone. (Remember your phone must be turned off)
8. If working you should see something like this –

Select the files and flash your W810.
1. Unplug the cable from your phone
2. Open the cover and remove the battery (Your battery should be fully charged before you flash your phone)
3. Remove the SIM card
4. Remove the memory card
5. Reinsert the battery and close the cover
6. Enter your “Login” and “Pass”
7. Click on the “Update Settings” button
8. From the client1594 program select the Main and FS files you download into the c:\W810 directory. See screen shot.
9. Select the CDA as America 1. (there is only one America 1 you can select in the dropdown)
10. Check the "Finalization" box
11. Uncheck “Increase SMS Inbox volume” - Confirm your screen looks like the screen shot below.
12. Click on the “Flash” button
13. While holding down the “C” button on your phone plug the cable into the phone.
14. Watch as your phone is flashed. Takes about 4-5 min. (Do not remove the cable or do anything on your computer while the phone is flashing or you will end up with an expensive paper weight. (I was paranoid and continued to hold down the “C” button during the entire flash process. I don’t think this is necessary .)
15. When completed you will see the text that looks like this-
Flash Finalization - successfull !!!
Exiting Test mode. Please wait...
Execution Time - 00:05:17
Done!
16. Disconnect the cable from your phone
17. Remove the battery
18. Plug in the SIM card
19. Plug in the memory card
20. Power on. It takes about 2-3 min for the phone to initialize the first time. You will see a progress bar.

The client should look like this before you click the "flash" button

awesome tutorial! thanks!!

Quick question though; Will a DaVinci update to the American firmware prevent future use of SEUS? What is the upside of using DaVinci now, rather than waiting for a SE update. Is there any downside to using DaVinci now other than the 12$?

Posted by: CuriousJ0N

thanks! just what i was looking for. just followed your instructions and my phone is now loaded with the new stuff. i'll be able to report on my dropped call issue in the other thread soon

Posted by: csrx

I've read that if you use a CDA for a region other than the original CDA (that came preloaded with your phone), SE updates will not be available.
This means if your phone is not from the Americas, you shouldnt be using the America CDA. They somehow match the esn to the cda. I think this is why W600 users were having problems using the SEUS update service.

Can someone confirm this. This was posted in the DaVinci FAQ's.

Posted by: Paco

From everything I have read so far, W600 users had problems because they were using an incorrect CDA, because they did not know what the proper CDA was to use at the time. W600 users have been able to change the CDA to a correct one, and were able to use SEUS. Someone even posted that here in one of the W810 flash threads.

My guess is that at worst, you can always flash back to what you had. It's just another log account to pay for. An SEUS official update could be months away. For myself, there was no way I was waiting that long. I am glad I didn't, since the phone rocks now.

Thanks! nice guide!

Just a quick couple of things on markl_farkl's fantastic instructions.

1.) make SURE you have UNCHECKED the increase sms inbox feature. At this point it does not work with the W810, and will screw up your phone

2.) You CAN use the PlayNow option to have, or not have the PlayNow button. I never used it, so I chose to not have it. What you get instead is an icon that is simply a quick bookmark to your internet account homepage

3.) It is a little scary at first, but once the client recognizes that phone and starts the process, you can let go of the 'C' button

3.) Regarding installation of the USBFlash Drivers. If you happen to have already installed the SEUS update software (maybe you officially upgraded another phone), you likely already have the appropriate USBFlash drivers installed. You might be able to skip that step.

4.) It's probably up for debate whether this last comment is useful, but I did a master reset all before starting any of the flash process. I have no idea if it did anything to help, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

Posted by: Paco

One more IMPORTANT thing:

The CDA that is used in the screenshot is not correct. The default pulldown menu includes CDAs for the K750, so that is not the right one to use. Nothing bad will happen, but as a result you will likely not be able to use SEUS later on. But don't worry, even if you used to wrong one, for another credit, you can do a fast cda change later if you need to.

The one you probably want to use with AMERICA 1 is:

CDA102555/15
(You can click in the CDA pulldown menu area and type in the cda just as it is above. No spaces.)

See below for full reference. This was posted by someone else, I think they got it using SETool.

SEUS can be quite picky... i've had a few phones that behave in a funny way.. some update and change the CDA back, some deny the update. some accept the new cda...

This is a great HOWTO, only problem is client1594 isn't available any more. The only client I can find is the client1595 unless I'm overlooking something...
And I've gone over the Davinci site pretty thoroughly. maybe someone can PM with a copy?

I'll upload client1594.zip to my webserver tonight and re-link it. I wonder why the Davinci team pulled it down from thier site...

DavinciTeams software is SEUS killer!
When you tried to Davinci, SEUS will not allow you to use SONY Ericsson upgrade service forever.
You have to stick with Davinci forever and pay them again and again!

SONY Ericsson upgrade service is free service!

no he's not cause SEUS can't make k750i>w800i or vice versa

Posted by: Qwest905

no i meant when talking about davinci

i believe he is thinking that if you flash with davinci from k750 to w800 u won't be able to update through SEUS anymore

well he's still wrong.. the update service wil detect as k750i and flash back to k750i firmware... been there done that..

Posted by: csrx

This is what I was talking about, from their FAQ's:

Can I change the CDA in the phone?
Simple answer YES

In order to use SEUS (SonyEricsson-Update-Service) you need to have a valid CDA number. Some CDA numbers (like from Vodafone) are banned from SEUS. The older phones, a CDA change was enough to bypass this, but in some newer phones, such as K750i they ban a combination from CDA / IMEI (serial) number. A K750i produced for HongKong market CANNOT work on SEUS with a CDA from a EURO country. Inorder to make this work you would need to change CDA + IMEI. IMEI changing is illegal, and Davinciteam does not support it!

If I do this to my phone, and then the SEUS comes out in the future, will I again be able to reflash with davinci to have the most recent firmware. I understand that to do this (if possible) I'll have to pay for another log, but that doesn't really bother me.

Once you do this on your phone, and then the SEUS comes out in the future.
You will not be bale to get upgraded via SEUS ! You have to pay davinciteam.com forever!

I'll do some field testing tomorrow. I also took Paco's advice and used CDA102555/15. So I guess we'll see about SEUS whenever they release an update.

if you change the CDA in the firmware to another region's (HK) does it mean that your phone will carry different languages after flashing?

W810 R4CK003 is out on davinci.

Posted by: d F

All this help on davinci's firmware flashing has been great. I ran it on my w810 last night with absolutely no issues, HOWEVER I'm not totally sure i used the CDA that Paco mentioned: CDA102555/15. I'll have to check to see which one I used, but I don't think it was that one.

In any case, I don't see much difference. My first phone call after the flash dropped after 6 minutes. I wasn't moving, and I had a full signal... pretty much the same issue occurred immediately.

Is it possible that the CDA would affect this? I haven't had ANY other issues with the phone. No flash problems, no music playback problems... nothing. I'll have to do more testing, and I will report back.

crap.

Posted by: d F

sorry...
should have mentioned that I used America1. The same setup as in the screen shots above, but I'm NOT sure about the CDA.

Ok, so I followed the instructions, everything went well, but now when I check "Software version" it still says CXC1250316 R4CEO12 000000

bump?

what did i do wrong??

any help greatly appreciated!

PS: I used W810_R4CE012_MAIN_GENERIC_HN.DVT, W810_R4CK003_FS_AMERICA_1.DVT, and CDA102337/15 - America1

guys you have to use the same firmwares

R4CE>R4CE
R4CK>R4CK
R4CF>R4CF

you can use different extensions like america and generic but the firmware has to be the same...

Posted by: Qwest905

that's why total multi server is so much easier =)

i did my w810 with total multi server since davinci didn't have the update when i did it....but i still had a davinci credit to use

so i used it on my z520

tms kills phones! BOO!!!!!

Posted by: darkninja

Total multi server is more expensive to boot

so i guess i should use W810_R4CK003_MAIN_EU-EMEA-US.DVT, correct?

BRICK!!!

Don't wanna scare anyone but I just killed my W810. I downloaded the R4CK firmware and did the whole rigamarole but for some reason forgot to check the finalize box. So the flash wen well -- successful but when I restarted the phone it did the progress bar thing and thes said there was some error. So I replugged in and reflashed making sure the Finalize was checked. Once again flash was sucessful (on the screen), I unplugged my phone screen went white, then phone went off. Now it won't turn on.
My other problem is is I can't get the stupid battery door out (I did the flash with my SIM in -- it worked fine before) so I can't take the battery out to reset the damn thing.
Power button now does nothing, Davinci client does not respond so I am at a loss.

Help me!

first you should do it with sim and memory card out.

second do you have any credits left?

third does your phone charge?

try this.. basic trouble shooting.

by 1 credit
reboot pc
start davinici. log in load up the files.. triple check all the settings are right.

take battery out of phone and put back in.. then press and hold c and connect to pc.

good luck!

Posted by: cokester

W810_R4CK003_MAIN_EU-EMEA-US.DVT +
W810_R4CK003_FS_AMERICA_1.DVT +
CDA102555/15 =

Success!

New firmware is up and running

Actually false alarm. When I got home I was able to pry the battery door open. Removed the battery then reseated it. Turned on the phone and voila, all was well. Now I am on R4CK003.

So even with the SIM card and the MS in there, it still worked. Now I've done 4 flashes so far all with SIM in and MS in and the first 3 went without a hitch at all and this fourth one gave me a scare but everything turned out well after all.

yes it does work with sim and card in... but it's "safer" to have them out.

Just flashed to R4CK003 successfully, but used the wrong CDA . So another 12 bones later for a fast CDA change i'm doing good... just more money i don't have in the hole .

So you guys are switching to R4CK?? from the other two. Or just a new firmware version of that FW?

What really ard the risks of leaving them in?

AFAIK, the CDA is only important in terms of SEUS updates. But since it is more likely that there will be an update on davinci before SEUS, why not save the credit for a full flash update, and then you can do the CDA change then as well? Doesn't seem worth spending a credit for just a CDA change unless you needed it for SEUS.

I know but i guess that i'm just a perfectionist and want this phone to be just right

Posted by: Paco

Out of curiosity, who is keeping the PlayNow button and who is isn't? I chose to dump it, since I don't need it.

Posted by: cam'ron

It's way better without the PlayNow button, you don't have the extra connect icon in your folders. For example, once I removed PlayNow it shows Camera Pictures (folder) and the other pictures. I always hated that extra icon and am pleased it's gone!

Posted by: cokester

i kept mine
no probs

Posted by: d F

brilliant. i was just going to ask the question that this answers... thanks.

wow, i really never see a reason not to go back to davinci for updates. i am forever done with dealing with providers and manufacturers.

thanks daVinci. do you guys make phones too?... ha.

I did the flash and forgot to check (or uncheck) the box to remove the PlayNow button even though I meant to. But I am curious, so what then happens to that icon position? What ends up there? What other noticeable changes happen other places?

Posted by: d F

Check that. That first dropped call after the firmware flash was a fluke... I was using my voicemail menu to test and apparently it was tired of me navigating back and forth through menus.

The update from Davinci absolutely worked... After the death of a friend's father last night, I spent literally hours and hours on the phone. Drained my battery down to 30% for the first time. NOT A SINGLE DROPPED CALL.

Terrible way to test the new firmware, but at least I could actually talk on the phone when I needed to.

Finally. Case closed.

Thanks to all.

The reason I asked about the versions was that someone mentioned you cannot change form R4CE to R4CK, but isn't that what the original poster did?

anyone who flashed having issues with macro mode?

I believe that they were reffering to not mixing the two. As in using the R4CE main generic hk file with the R4CK fs america 1 file. I flashed mine to R4CF to R4CK with no problems.

Yes! My macro still focuses but not as closely as it did before. Damn.

Edit: Actually it seems ok. The clicking is just the autofocus in action.

I have a PowerMac G5 running OS 10.3.9
Can you do all the DaVinci W810i flashing described in this thread from Mac?
If so, can someone post the steps? Thanks!

Posted by: Paco

AFAIK, no. You will need a Windows machine. Or possibly an Intel Mac

can you do a cda flash only? Does this wipe out all the data like a firmware flash?

Posted by: HiTekAlex

So what's new/different in R4CK versus R4CE/R4CF? Does SE publish release notes for these anywhere?

Posted by: simulator

Its definitely gotten rid of the delete picture bug, where if you delete a picture in 3x3 thumbnail mode it jumps ahead or behind by a few pics. I think it has incrementally improved my low light pictures as well.

It seems to have marginally improved reception as judged by signal strength. I never had a significant drop call problem with the original firmware, though.

anyone know data settings for Cingular/w810? I found a few that didn't seem to work. should i be looking for GPRS? Did i miss this in another post somewhere?

I vote flash with Taiwan, unless you're comfortable with an americanized phone.

I purchased my phone in Chinatown in NYC. It has R4CF002. However, the ftp site only has files for taiwan, orange, and thai that match the R4CF prefix. I am a native english speaker. Should I use the R4CE prefix with the america1? If I flash with one of these which CDA would I need to use? Is there a way that I can use my IMEI to tell which region my unit originally shipped from?

Please help!!!

Posted by: Paco

First off, what exactly is your objective? If you just want to move to AMERCA 1, why not use R4CKxxx?

And as far as CDA, page 1 of this thread has a graphic with all CDA's for the W810 listed.

There are 2 files in an update, the MAIN file and the FS (File system) file. What is meant is that if you are going to upgrade to R4CKxxx then both the MAIN and the FS file has to be the R4CK version. It does not mean that you are stuck at R4CE012 at all.

The best is -- if you are using davinci -- to do the following: right before you flash, you first go and get the flash files, download the one you want (in your case then AMERICA1) making sure to get both the MAIN and the FS by clicking on both in the get file dialog. When that is done, the relevant fields will be pointing to the files you just downloaded. Then make sure you check the boxes on the left (flash MAIN, flash FS *and* Finalize) Put in the correct CDA then go to town. This is described more in detail in the first post of this thread.

So its okay for me to upgrade to:

R4CK003 FS AMERICA1.DVT
with R4CK003 MAIN_EMEA-US.DVT

Posted by: docmagoo2

The CDA merely tells SEUS what network and country you are in. It will update ur fone with the latest firmware that has been made available by ur provider (or in the case of inbranded fones by SE) in ur area. SEUS has no way of telling were in the world u are, so as long as you use a CDA correct for ur fone then SEUS will work, even after flashing with davinci! I changed my O2 branded W800i to a generic UK CDA and was able to get the latest update even tho O2 had not released it. You need to make sure that the FS and MAIN files correspond with each other tho, not sure what would happen if you only changed the CDA without actually flashing these files, and then tried to update! anyone any experience with this occurrence?

on another note, has anyone any idea how to upload extra language files (if even possible) without having to flash the firmware?

regards
doc

Posted by: haritia

doc,
what was meant was that if you set you phone to 555/15 (AM1) and fw v R5a001 came out for CHINA and EU1, then you will not get the upgrade. Also, there are rumours (unconfirmed) that on some phones, SE maintains a database that says IMEI 1234 has a CDA of 15 for example. Well, if you flashed 1234 to CHINA and tried to get the update, it would fail because it notices that the IMEI does not match the region in their DB.

I am having trouble loading the driver from davinci's site. My system states that the driver is incorrect for my hardware. I purchased a license and I would really like to start using my phone without dropping calls every 5 minutes. Any suggestions??

i was able to flash my phone using these instructions. I still experience call drops. I'm about to sell this phone on ebay. btw, I'm using tmobile. I have tried it on cingular and it has not dropped a call... Could it be related to tmobile?

I'm on Cingular and was experiencing the dropped call issue...so i really don't think it's provider specific..

I've had this phone for a few weeks now and have not had a single call dropped. I am on T-Mobile and most of my call over 2 minutes I switch to either my BT headset or the corded one. I got the phone at E level firmware and flashed it to the F level ad no to the K level and at no point did I get the dropped calls problem. I still have other problems though.

Posted by: eao

I upgraded my firmware via DaVinci to the R4ck003 GENERIC with AMERICA_2 (ENG,SPAN,PORT). I got rid of the CHINA firmware.. Now I get MORE BARS and haven't had a single DROP CALL.

I ENCOURAGE TMO/CING users to get the GENERIC firmware if you have the ASIA/CHINA versions. I used to have issues with that firmare.

Posted by: tdarw

So althougth you upgraded, you're still having calls dropped every 5 minutes? I dont know if this is a problem or not, but the instrucitons seemed to be made by someone who is using Cingular and not Tmobile (US). Would the update be different for Tmobile?

I'm currently running R4CE012 so I have to stay with the same firmware version. I purchased my phone in Europe.

Ive got my DaVinci login details and everything, but my laptop just wont work with the USB cable, when I put the CD in and plug my phone it does not ask to install drivers, and when using SE Suite USB cable wont work.

Actually, I think it has become worst too. I wonder if this is tmobile related...

Very possible that it's T-mobile related. Are you running version R4CE012 ? I wonder if the Davinci team will create a seperate update for T-mobile users?

yes, im running R4CEO12 now. What a waste of my time and money to deal with this non sense... A phones primary function is to be able to hold a conversation.

What firmware did you have before, and what firmware did you flash? Also, where are you located (just curious)?

Since SE Suite is not working either - I would try testing it on another computer.
If that does not work I would then suspect a bad cable...

In case this was aimed towards me as well, mine was the same firmware version as what I flashed it to, but I read that the DTV files would make a difference. I'm in Southern CA. I purchased my phone in Sweden, home of Ericsson..

Hi,

I'm trying to flash my UK ORANGE to the american version. When I'm trying to do the first test:

I do not see anything. Reading CID started.... Turn off the phone .... HOLD 'C' button and plug USB cable.

Yes, the phone is OFF. I followed the instructions.

I stop it after 2 min .

Any idea?

Thanks.

Andreas

Looks like you dont have the driver loaded.

The driver was the biggest challenge for me. My computer had already loaded the Windows driver so I was not being prompted to install it.
If the Davinchi software did not detect your phone confirm the following
1. Did you load the driver? If yes did windows prompt you for the driver when you plugged the phone in or was it a Right click then select install? I think the only “valid” driver install is when windows prompts you for it. I’m not sure. It would be nice if someone here knew.
2. Did the phone ever successfully communicate with your computer via USB? If not then it could be an issue with your computer or the cable.

Remember the easiest thing to get around all this is to flash on a computer that you have never connected the phone to before. Windows will then prompt you for the driver.

I did lots of stuff when I was trying to get my computer to detect the phone as a new device and prompt me for the driver. I’m not sure exactly what I did to finally get it to detect it as a new device. Here are some of the things I did. Sorry I don’t have a silver bullet for this one. I was hoping someone else would post more specific instructions on this part..

1. Uninstall the Sony Ericsson software.
2. Reboot the machine
3. Right click on the driver then select install
4. Reboot the machine
5 Plug the usb cable into the computer
6. While holding down the “C” button on your phone plug the USB cable into the phone. (Remember your phone must be turned off)"
At this point my computer detected the phone and asked me to select the driver.

I think the driver install is the biggest challenge. (it was for me at least) Sorry I could not help any more.

Posted by: akbunte

Thanks a lot. Yes, it was the not correctly installed driver.

I just flashed my phone and it works !!!!!!

I'm happy.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!

I just wanted to let you guys know that I am on T-Mobile in Colorado. I had the same dropped calls issue before the flash as everyone else. I flashed to the R4CK003 firmware and am pleased to report that I no longer have any dropped calls! Therefore I don't think this issue is provider-specific.

Posted by: joef1122

I have had troubles with dropped calls so I had someone look at the phone and they went into settings, connectivity, mobile net, perferred net and delete all networks except your network. Mine is rogers so thats the only one I have now and no more dropped calls. Hope that helps.

Need some help here folks. I'm pretty sure my W810 was charging using the USB cable when I had it in phone mode. After flashing it to R4CK003 the phone will not charge via the USB cable in phone mode. It will charge only in File Transfer mode. Anyone else having similar problem? Anyone know of a remedy?

I flashed mine and I now have R4CE012 and it's working well. I initially thought that it was T-mobile related since I was still getting dropped calls after I flashed it. But after about 30 minutes, it started to stabilize. No more dropped calls since May 18! I was wondering if you changed the CDA to CDA102555/15.

This is the best phone I've ever had!

Mine as well. And whenever I use DaVinci to get the "flash file" or "update list" it won't let me connect.

it is not possible to update with SEUS like i always have upgraded my firmwares?? this way is so complicated+u have to buy da vinci or what it is..

You might be able to upgrade using SEUS, but the only way to know is to just try it. Some phones can be, others can't. Try it and find out.

I am still getting the dropped calls out here in Taiwan. I bought the phone in taiwan and flashed the CDA and everything to with the software provided tht related to Taiwan. i have version thsi version now on my phone
CXC1250319
R4CK003

Should i re-flash this again to american specs?

Posted by: Evolaerok

Success.... oh my god that was a nerve wrecking process.... I'm gonna get dressed and do a test call real quick.

Posted by: gg3x5

Just flashed... biggest gamble I've ever made. WOW MAGICALLY my SMS/Texting issue is fixed! Thank you everyone for all of your help, I was starting to think I bought a really expensive 2 MP camera! Well done, well done. BTW, my flash took 10:00 min, for anyone who might try it, don't worry if it doesn't finish in under five minutes.

Posted by: Paco

Flash time will be dependent on many things, including processor speed, etc. Also, when doing something this 'sensitive', it's always good to first reboot your computer, and not have any other programs running while doing the flash. Good info to others that it can take as little as 4 mins, and as much as 10 mins or more.

Purchased: LA-LA West
W810 Current Software: CXC1250317 - R4CF002
Carrier: T-Mobile Southern California
Platform: G5 - OS-X

- First Week Review-
The phone package arrived quick and as shown. I opted for the 2GB memory stick package and am very glad I did.

- The Goods -
- The walkman function works amazingly! i use iTuneMyWalkman for iTunes playlist control.
- I walk the dog and listen to podcasts through the speaker
- I plug it through a mini-jack into my car stereo - great sound!!
- Dreamsicle software seems to work well (I have demo and am considering purchasing). Even recompresses video well.
- I use unlimited EDGE/Bluetooth modem on a Powerbook (via T-mobile) - get 76k average speed. Even allows me to make calls while online!
- Love the iPhoto camera integration out-of-the-box. Nice camera too, macro shots are beautiful, sometimes can't believe it's from a phone.
- Use Opera Mini, Google Maps, RSS Reader - beautiful!
- Available iSync plugin works perfect.
- love the fact i can charge the phone through USB port on my powerbook.
- calls are stable when not moving.
- SIM card move from Nokia 3650 was without problems.

- The Bads -
- contact fields seem to truncate
- to view address and other info on contacts, have to click 'edit' (anyone know a quicker workaround?)
- shortcut button (very useful otherwise) only allows me to choose folders (can't link directly to Opera for instance)
- when bluetooth headset is connected, it aks me with every call whether i want to use it or not, an uneccessary step if i am already paired and connected.
- can't seem to delete videos i transferred to the phone (example LOST episode) - says it deletes and then when i come back to directory, file is still there. Dreamsicle seems to be an alternative (though I only have demo) but you should be able to delete directly from the phone if you want/need the space.

and most important (and relevant to this thred):
- DROPS CALLS when I'm traveling in the car. Happens everytime I'm in the car so far.

So thus my question:
Are there any T-Mobile / LA-area users who have done the flash and if so, what CDA are you using to fix this? The step-by-step recommeds R4CE012 but I've also noticed a few T-Mobile users (Denver for example) have been using R4CK003. Any tips much appreciated as I've already paid for the davinciteam login-account and would like to flash as soon as I can to solve the dropped call issue.

Last question:
Has anyone tried Virtual Radio (http://www.vradio.org/) with this phone? it seems like a killer app to stream SOMA-FM via EDGE.

thanks much! i loved this phone!

I'm in So. Cal. T-Mobile and I flashed mine to R4CE012 and no more dropped calls, it really solved the problem. I used to get dropped calls even when I'm not moving.

Is the iTuneMyWalkman and Dreamsicle just for Macs? I'm a PC user and want to be able to control my playlist, haven't done videos but I sure would like to try.

If you want to have your call answered by your BT headset try changing your settings to make answer in the headset -- Settings - Calls - Handsfree - Bluetooth - My Handsfree - Incoming Call - Handsfree.

Hope this helps.

I'm going to try this whole flashing thing later tonight/this week, and have no clue what I'm doing ... and recommendations for a rookie? Any suggestions for a Canadian on Rogers services?? I love this phone (w810i), but the dropped call issue is really startin to get on my nerves. I'm currently on CXC1250317 and R4CF002 ...

Any help would be appreciated (not that this post hasn't been help enough!)

thanks,

I'm in SoCal as well and I was having dropped call issues. The first day I flashed it, it seemed to be worse. But after a few days, I have no more dropped calls. There are a few times where it seems like it switches to a different mode and the other person talkng breaks up a bit, but otherwise, I haven't had one dropped call which makes me extremely happy since this is a phone and you're supposed to make phone calls with it. I'm running R4CE012.

Posted by: HoOn

Well, I updated my W810 to the new R4CK003 Firmware. I thought I did something wrong because I got the "Configuration error. Please contact your service provider or service center" error message on boot up after I just flashed the phone. I thought I needed to cough up another $12 for the Davinci Log but it's a good thing I searched and realized that I forgot to check the "Finalization" checkbox in the client. I just re-did the process and now it works! We'll see how this is now.

I realize I'm changing the subject here, but does anyone know if the HBH-DS970 stereo bluetooth headset will work with the W810i? Sony's site states it will work with a few, but doesn't show the W810i as one, and I've seen people complain about how this phone does not support bluetooth headsets. Also, anyone know if this is available anywhere?

Posted by: jrosen

I have a W810i with Firmware Version: R4CF002 China. I'm having the "dropped call problem" that I've seen so many postings about.
1) Does anyone know someone reliable in the New York City area that could do firmware flashing upgrade on my phone?
2) Has anyone had experience with www.iunlock.com ? I was thinking of sending it to them if I can't find anyone in NYC and just wanted to get some references. The site looks very legit.

Should I be trying to find FW with a Canadian extension? ... does such a thing exist, or will I be ok using R4CK_FS_America?

Just use the one for America. You can just download W810_R4CK003_MAIN_EU-EMEA-US.DVT for the Main file and W810_R4CK003_FS_AMERICA_1.DVT for the FS file. Do you need French because I am not sure which files you would need for it. Check which CDA number you want from the first page or just use the Generic USA which is CDA102555/15.

Good Luck!

Thanks!!! I'll do that, and no French is not needed, but the thought is nonetheless appreciated!!!

Has this worked out better for you? You see I just followed the original instruction used these W810_R4CE012_MAIN_GENERIC_HN.DVT and W810_R4CE012_FS_AMERICA1.DVT... I did notice some improvement, but still some dropped calls at times.

anyone else have this problem? i downloaded the correct file client1594 (even tried twice to be sure) but when the file is unzipped, all i see are three files:

1. client1594.dll
2. Launcher.exe
3. z530_w810 cda.txt

there is no text 'Sony Ericsson flasher/unlocker v15.94' to click. The Launcher seems to only launch a blank window with the titlebar.

any help? thanks much

btw, i'm running WinXP via Virtual PC

Did you unzip the files? When you unzip them, click the "Launcher.exe" which will bring up a small window like this...

Click it!

Good Luck!

PS
I didn't see that little info you have using WinXP virtually. Are you on a Mac. I'm not sure how reliable the connection will be. Good Luck x 2!

actually, when i click the launcher, i get this strage titlebar only:

which i can resize the underneath, but still blank:

i'm running winXP pro

Just wanted to add my two cents. I just received a W810i, that was dropping calls like crazy out of the box (on Cingular). Did the update according to the instructions on page one of this thread and no more dropped calls. I got in the car and drove around on one phone call for ninety minutes with no drops.

Anyone know how to tell which CDA is loaded on the phone to begin with? When I look at my current software version, it's CXC1250316 R4CE012 000000 Sony Ericsson.

I have lots of slavic languages by default. Although I'm located in California, I'd prefer not to mess up my CDA and lose future ability to use over-the-air SEUS. So, I'd like to pick the compatible CDA to the one I already have, but can't seem to "find" it in the phone.

Does anyone know, if I flash my phone with a different country's firmware, would I be getting that contry's language support in my phone? (I am intending to be able to read/type traditional chinese, will flash my phone with -taiwan suffix work?) Anyone has tried this before? Thanks.

Posted by: luckyluca

Hi,

I'm one step from trying this Davinci thing:

I have a uk T-mobile Uk branded w810i.
I've been suggested to use
W810 R4CK003 EU/EMEA/US Main
W810 R4CK003 EU5 FS (English, Italian, German and French)
CDA: CDA102494/44 (type it in manually, not from the list)

as I'm mainly using english and italian languages.

Now, Are these versions correct for me?
and in particular will it be possible for me to start using SEUS once debranded using this CDA ( CDA102494/44 ) ?

Thanks
Luca

Posted by: bananacat

can someone please tell me what the R3A after the CDA for uk generic is and do i need to add that when i type in the CDA whilst flashing

many thanks

Follow up on my previous post:

I just flashed my W810i with the following firmwares:

W810_R4CK003_FS_TAIWAN.DVT
W810_R4CK003_MAIN_TAIWAN.DVT

with USA: CDA102555/15 (manually entered)

And yeah it does work! I am able to read chinese and even type in chinese (traditional). Made a call for about 10mins on GSM850 and didn't get dropped like before. Of course I will need to give it more try to confirm this firmware fixes the common drop call problem with w810i. But so far it works just fine and somehow i think the voice quality is even better! Didn't experience the camera's macro mode issue some people have mentioned. Thanks for all the input people have made in this forum!

Will post again in the future to confirm this firmware.

Posted by: Evolaerok

btw an update, this flash worked great. My issue is fixed, while I was driving to denver my wife used the w810i to call my mother in law and the total talk time was an hour with absolutely no dropped call.

Posted by: 6131717

I have no problems (so far) with my w810i with the firmware that ends in 012. Are there any other benefits to upgrading the firmware?

Also, is buzzing that goes on and off (sometimes I hear it, sometimes not) during a call with the w810i considered "normal"?

For me the entire reason to flash it was to get the language pack I wanted (Norwegian/Swedish/Danish/Finnish/Icelandic/English). It came with a crappy language pack; south-east Asia languages. I tried flashing just the FS; that left me with the correct menu languages, and all of the right T9 lists, except I had Chinese instead of English, haha. So another $12 later and a proper FW + FS flash and I'm all set. It's working great and SEUS doesn't give me any errors. Since I'm on the latest firmware I guess I won't know for sure until the next version comes out...

Posted by: shaolinmonk

I can't get SEUS to work after flashing... i've flashed about 5 w810i's now with various cda's but all say... your w810i has the latest firmware grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

two obvious fixes are the flickering flash light and camera shutter sound in silent mode.

So far the new firmware (R4CK) from DaVinci I flashed has been awsome! I've been using the phone for 3 days and absolutely no drop calls at all.

Yes the Da Vinci is one NON USERFRIENDLY program and their tutorials are full of unplugged holes. Mayby you should offer your help and rewrite tutorials for them

Just flashed a w810i for the first time (it is from Singapore) to R4CK003 due to dropped call issue right out of the box.

Problem is, the language set changed from what was originally there! (Original languages installed were English, Malaysian, Indonesian, Chinese, etc.)

Now it shows Turkish, Arabic, Russian, etc.!!!

Here is what I used to flash my w810i:

W810_R4CK003_MAIN_CHINA-APAC-THAI.DVT
W810_R4CK003_FS_C_ASIA.DVT
CDA102555/101

I thought that using the CDA102555/101 Generic Singapore would be the right one for the same languages that came with the phone, but it would appear not! Sadly, I did not realize I could check the CDA before starting the process....:-(

Does anyone know what I should do now to get the original languages back??? Should I have used different files?

I tried using SEUS, but there was no language change.

I am happy to flash again, etc. to correct this.

Many, many thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Posted by: wrldtrvl

I used Total Multiserver to flash phone (previous flash was with DaVinci) using the package 2006-05-01 - W810_R4CK003_RED_CID49

This included two files:

W810_R4CK003_ZONE_3_CHINA-APAC-THAI.81S

W810_R4CK003_APAC_EN_ID_MS_TL_VI_ZS.81D

This returned me back to the original language set, as well as the correct version CXC1250317 used in SE Asia!!!

Hope this helps anyone else who may need it!

i got the white screen of death for my brand new w810i yesterday . first i thought its just some charging problem and kept charging it. finally after 4 hours of charging i knew something was wrong. googled n realised its a generic firmware problem with sony ericsson. y they wud lauch a phone wid such an issue is beyond me.
anyway, googled some more n found this thread. was extremely helpful.

thanks a lot mate.

had to flash my fone some 8 times coz of an error on the davinci server, kept giving an error. but finally on the 8th try it got thru. n now my fone's working again.

i know this thread wasn't for the white screen issue, but thought i shud let ppl know that flashing the w810i wid the latest firmware gets rid of that issue as well.

Posted by: Paco

wrldtrvl, It appears you simply used the wrong language FS when you used Davinci. If you had used the correct one the first time, you could have avoided a reflash. Definitely important to make sure you choose the correct files when flashing. Not sure why you switched to TMS. Did you find it easier to use? I do think TMS provides much better documentation, but they are more expensive, right?

okay.

so if i have a rogers branded w810, and i want to flash it with generic hong kong firmware.

should i change it also to the generic hong kong CID? or use the USA CID?

does it matter which one i use? If i use the USA CID, would i keep AMR? Whereas if i use the hong kong CID, i lose AMR?

are these files right to use to get vietnamese and english language setting and live in USA?

main: R4CK003_MAIN_CHINA-APAC-THAI.DVT
FS: R4CK003 FS AMERICA 1.DVT
CDA: CDA102555/15

are they right?
thanks

Posted by: Paco

You will need a 'matching' pair of main and FS files. To find the correct FS with the right languages you need, I'd suggest posting in the Davinci forums. Someone there is likely to know.

thanks, i did so but still couldn't find an answer. sucks for me

Posted by: simms

Two things that no one has mentioned yet:
1) Flashing voids any warranty you get from the manufacturer (Rogers in my case). Is there a way to back up your current FS and file settings to restore them in case you need to restore your phone to factory condition?

2) With flashing right now, you lose AMR, right? Does anyone know of a FW where AMR is preserved in a flash to generic?

Posted by: simms

Also, under Customization..

I have CDA102494/72 R8A
cxc1250324 r4ce012
ROGERS
Memory Stick:
CDA102428/100

This is a Rogers locked + branded phone... I assume when I flash I use
CDA102494/72? Or should I just use the Generic USA one?

It's kind of stupid to use this CDA because even though I have R4CE012, SEUS says I have latest firmware.. when I know R4CK003 is out.. so shouldn't I use generic then?

thank you, i think i might do it. but i still wonder if that would fix the drop call problems and would i be able to update with seus

Posted by: Paco

Well, I can't guarantee either of those will happen. But in my experience, flashing, especially to a different firmware region, will always correct the dropped call problem.

Regarding SEUS, my opinion on that has not changed. I personally don't care if I can't update with SEUS. Many people who have never flashed can't update with SEUS either.

BUT, if you are hesitant to do it, than don't. IMHO, if you can't afford to kill the phone in the process, than don't flash it.

I've searched and read all the threads but I can't find an exact answer as to what the PlayNow option is. Right now I've got a Rogers branded and locked phone R4CE012, that I'd like to flash.

1) Should I ENable or DISable the option to include PlayNow?

2) If I include it, where does it show up in the main menu Top Left (position 1, Internet) or Top Middle (position 2... for me, this is called Rogers Mall)

3) If I use PlayNow, Is it just a link to a webpage where you can download ringtones, etc that will cost me money everytime I accidently press it?

4) And if you don't install PlayNow, what icon appears there? Another "File Manager" icon, or what?

Kinda Offtopic, but...
5) Will following this guide remove the shutter sound? I see an option for "Tones" in 15.94... do we need to add in a silenced midi or anything like that?

Posted by: Paco

If you are planning to flash your phone to an unbranded firmware, than the PlayNow icon would show up in position one. Regarding you point #3, you would have to choose an item to purchase. You can't accidentally do it.. If you chose to not include it, you will instead get an icon which is a bookmark to your WAP Homepage.

Regarding the shutter sound, with the unbranded firmware, there is no sound when the phone is on silent (at least with AMERICA_1).

I cannot get the USB driver to install. I have tried on 2 different windows machines, one running 2000 and the other on XP. Both say the driver has no information for my device.

Can anyone help me here? I tried downloading from the link on the first page 8 or 9 times with the same result. I have the DaVinici credits and the app, and I am ready to do this, but I cannot get the driver and the phone to reconcile. How incredibly frustrating.

Any help? I am a mac guy and this windows driver thing is new to me. I am almost surely doing something wrong. I tried stepping through the installation wizard and pointing at the downloaded driver as recommended in the tutorial on this thread, but I always get the "no info for your device" error.

As an alternative, you may want to download and install the SEUS application, and follow it's install instructions. It will install a USB driver that will work with Davinci.

Oh, wow. I am not too bright. The driver installed perfectly fine. My problem was I was holding down the "2 ABC" on the number pad instead of the "C" key, as in "clear" to the right of the control stick.

Man, that was really, really stupid. Thanks for trying to help out the village idiot.

Just flashed to Generic R4DB005 with AMR and Chinese.

Guys I am trying to flash my w810i from American Firmware to Hong Kong Firmware because I wanted to see Chineses.

It is currently flashing 366 blocks but it is doing it very slowly. It is 1 hour and only gone through 20 blocks!

How come it is so slow? It is going.. but very very slow. Is this suppse to be like this? I afraid to stop in the middle of it.

How long does it usually take to flash?

Do we still use client-1594 to do the flash or no? Trying to flash my phone at the moment and would like to know I'm doing it all right. Thanks

Sounds like the issues some had were all about bad flash files that have now been corrected.

If you care to just flash, 16.3 will work fine. If you want to remove the PlayNow, you'll still need to use 15.94.

Regarding the AMR feature that is available, I thought I'd post this here (from the Cingular forum) for reference of Cingular user's. Other carriers may be different, but since I use Cingular, that's the only place I posted:

My question: "Is using AMR bad with Cingular?"

From HappyBunny: "*YES*. It gives that lovely garbled voice quality--and Cingular uses it *all* the time on 380 (blue), not just when the network is especially busy. They seem to be doing it because the 380 network does not have enough capacity in So Cal (it may be different where you live), so they compress all the bandwidth to fit everyone on. Result is garbled calls, bad handoffs and one way conversations. The 170 network does not use it all the time. I used to notice it on that one on Sundays, when the network was very busy. I had a phone at the time where I couldnt disable it--and I could hear the quality degradation. But now, no more AMR!" (From HERE>

Obviously this is just one person's opinion, but, again, just wanted to share.
