Actually, the screen is Razr-like sized, so it's not small...but, since the Razr is not 3G either, Nokia didn't see the need for it. It's still better than the EDGE-less wonder that is the Razr V3i.

I've heard late June or July.

Posted by: Rcadden

sucks, though, there's no way I will buy another non-3G phone. Just doesn't make sense anymore. It'd be like going back to VGA camera.

Posted by: CaptShadow

It looks like it's going to be an awesome phone. The external screen is as big as my 6101's internal! I am curious about the build quality though.
No 3G is not a problem for me since I just occasionally use Medianet.

Posted by: ALCingularUser

I won't be due for an upgrade until 10/12 of this year, and I may wait longer, since I just got a z520a. By then, there may be an updated version of the 6126 with 3G. I don't really care about the data. What I want is 3G voice. After all, if Cingular is going to launch a 3G voice network, I might as well be able to use it.

Still, this looks like one sweet phone. Does anyone know if Nokia is building it themselves or outsourcing? Wasn't the 6101/6102 outsourced to BenQ? Why would they do such a stupid thing, especially on their first GSM flip for North America? When you release a new product, you either need to make it yourself to ensure it meets your quality control specs or watch the outsourced manufacturer like a hawk to make sure they do. Not that the 6101/6102 is a terrible phone, but it sure doesn't seem to compare favorably with Nokia's past efforts.

My gut instinct thinks that since the 6126/6133 is going to be such a high quality phone with so many features, it's going to be manufactured by Nokia. You never know, though. BenQ phones are supposedly getting pretty good.

I hadn't heard that before, it would explain a lot.

Posted by: bigmike20

Why wait for the 6126 (we all know Cingular w/ releasing phones on time)when the 6131 has been released. It's basically the same phone.

Posted by: anubis9278

6131 has 850 band?

Posted by: bigmike20

yes. it's quadband.

Posted by: Laynie

16.7 M colours? thats prety nice, especially for that screen. I hope its not like the 6102; VERY NON DURABLE. my 6102 could go on me any day now... at least it has not antenna.. the plastic covering on my 6102's atenna and speaker fell off.

Posted by: jhldeans

Where is it available?

Posted by: mbranscum

Not on ebay yet...

Posted by: ItalianAngel831

i want it now look likea great phone hopefully rf will b as good as the 6230.

yeah, clearly noobs considering this is perhaps the first flip phone with such a calibur of display... 16 million colors and 320x240 screen, not to mention memory card etc, quadband, radio on some models, etc. In my book, the only flip phone of nokia's that was a joke quality wise was the 6260.

Nokia > Motorola, LG, Samsung

'nuff said...

I'll be grabbing one as soon as they hit eBay (the 6131).

yep, me also, i hope its not too expensive..

i've already saved up $450 for this phone just in case

Compared to an N80, it'll be cheap!

i was looking at the n93 but it looks like that phone wont make it here, and it is not quad band. this phone looks very nice. nokia makes good phones, but their ui is a touch old and slow. the shots of the ui on the web for the 6131 looks like the ui has changed though

Posted by: Wide_opeN

u guys r a bit touchy here aren't you? just cause it's nokia doesn't mean it's gods gift to the world you know? all im saying is that nokia clearly has some catching up to do in the flip phone genre!

how and why? the 6101/6102 and the 6061 are pretty much entry level, and blow the socks off of what other companies offered as their entry level flips: see entry motos, samsungs, and lgs.

You're absolutely right and upon further review I just may have to pick this baby up myself!!!!!!!!!! Hey does anyone know if Nokia allows assigning ringtones to individual phone contacts now? Better question if they do will it be on this phone?

I agree Nokia's old s40 is a bit out of touch, but it's definitely not slow. Have you ever tried a 6230? That thing was zippy-zippy.

Posted by: tuolumne

The S40 UI is extremely slow if you have a Nokia with an STN display running the show.

True, but STN hasn't been used for a while except for 6010... and the 6030... and the 6061... ermm nevermind! but it's not that slow

Have you guys used the 9300 s40? Now that thing is slow.

Early July is the ETA. Replaces the V557 in the line up.

Posted by: ItalianAngel831

how can a nokia replace a moto in the lineup? i guess the v557 wasn't that good didn;t last long at all.

It shouldnt have lasted long, it was the same phone as the v551 except for the screen3 technology!

The STN display makes the UI almost unbearable (and this is not just a Nokia phenomenon.

It's not so much the screen 16.7M colors that will make the difference. It is the 320x240 resolution! That will be the killer! I don't know about you, but the difference between 65K colors and 16.7M colors is not nearly as impacting as going from 176x220 to 320x240.

Let's hope that the bottomline of this phone is as good as its features promise to be, such as great sound quality, battery life, and reception, as well as bug-free firmware. I think everyone hates their phone freezing or crashing every time they want to make a call, or an earpiece that sounds cheap or weak.

Also, let's hope they don't make the same mistake Sony Ericsson made with the z520, that forces you to keep the flip open if you want to use the speakerphone during a call. As someone else mentioned, Nokia is not a veteran making flip phones just like Sony Ericsson.

The 6170b does not have that issue, so hopefully this phone will not!

Off topic, but I don't think that will be an issue with the z525.

I went through the specs on the Nokia site and the only difference I found is that the 6131 size is in millimeters and the 6126 is in inches. Other than that, I don't know what the differences are if any.

Phonescoop says that only the 6131 has IR port and FM radio, but apparently that's incorrect because the Nokia website states that both phones have these features.

I agree, but you don't have to use it

Posted by: bostonirishguy

OK, just got it. It's a nice little mobile. The flip works fine on mine. Screen is nice. Audio nice and clear. It has the same footprint as my V710, but not as thick. Camera works. FYI, camera will not work while phone is charging. If I had to compare it to another phone, I'd say it's a flip version of the 6270 WITHOUT the vm icon issue (I just tested it). Pics and more to come later all.

I posted pics in the Nokia Forum.

I will say that the screen is spectacular

No UMTS (3G)? WTF? Why are mobile phone providers still shipping this crap?

The point is not to view retarded streaming video on the phone; it's to tether it via BT to your laptop.

Aren't 3G phones backward compatible? (i.e. GPRS/EDGE) If so, then market penetration is irrelevant. Your argument is like saying that computers shouldn't come with gigabit ethernet ports because most people have 10MB or 100MB connections on their switches, even though the cost difference is negligible.

How about this for an answer - because obviously 3G phones will be more expensive and everyone doesn't want an expensive phone and for those that do I would say because the manufacturers obviously aren't ready to produce 3G phones for North America. LG and Samsung are the only one available so far in the US. No other manufacturers even in sight for a UMTS or HSDPA release on 850 / 1900. Do you remember how long after EDGE was ready on the networks before many manufacturers had EDGE phones? Some took a really long time, Sony Ericsson is a good example.

Motorola is even a better example. To this day they are still struggling to get EDGE to work right. That's why most Moto phones don't have EDGE.

A 176x220 resolution screen is NEVER sexier than a 320x240 screen.

WHEN is this phone coming out for Cingular? I just got a VM from Verizon today saying that they're letting me out of my contract due to poor service at my new house!! Unfortunately, I don't really want any of Cingular's current phones.

You can buy any phone with cingular, sell it, and with the revenue pick up a 6131 off ebay. They're the same phone.

This phone is so ugly to me, with exception of the screen.

Yeah, I thought about that, but my concerns with that approach are:

1. Some people have had problems with the 6131's off of eBay (audio mostly)
2. No support from Cingular whatsoever
3. VMI doesn't seem to be working correctly for everyone with the unbranded phone
4. No warranty
5. How easy will it be to obtain newer firmware versions for the 6131 when they become available?

I've never had an unbranded/unlocked phone before...I'm not even sure you can do that with Verizon, so I never considered it. Seems like a lot of people do it with Cingular though.

Still behind the designs from Nokia, Samsung, and Motorola.

I prefer the cleaner lines and business-oriented look of the 6131/6126...reminds me of my all-time favorite Motorola, the V600.

I heard from the reviews in the Nokia forum that the battery life is just plain horrible on the 6131.

actually i have one and i am not even happy with rf performance..in some tests the moto l7,d600 and n80 showed 1 to 2 bars and could carry a call whereas 6131 showed no bars...i am not tooo impressed..

I suggest people read this thread

4. No warranty
5. How easy will it be to obtain newer firmware versions for the 6131 when they become available?

I've never had an unbranded/unlocked phone before...I'm not even sure you can do that with Verizon, so I never considered it. Seems like a lot of people do it with Cingular though.

1. Should that problem arise, it usually can be fixed with a firmware update
2. You're right, but if you need to take the phone in for service, just pop the Cingular SIM into the Cingular branded phone.
3. Can't answer that for ya since I don't have the phone

5. No idea, check for a Nokia service center in your area

It's thumbs up on most things. But, the camera is not working properly, so I'm sending back for an exchange. I've posted pics and such over in the thread in the Nokia Forum.

i have a 6131. For about a week. And i have no problems with the camera, batterey, earpiece volume. The phone works great and i love it.

It seems to work fine. The phone can be opened manually as well.

BTW, I love your logo.
No, I have found the opposite with my 6131. I can now call from anywhere in my house, where as all the Motos I have had before would drop calls. It also will send texts and MMS really fast and again from anywhere in my house.

Possibly having issues.

Posted by: Michael95GT

I just tried to buy a graphic off MediaNet with my 6131. I got an interesting message. Ya'll think this is a good sign?

Posted by: Michael95GT

Normally it just says " This content is not available for your phone model" or something along those lines.

Maybe release is getting close.

Posted by: bobolito

That message always pops up when you use a non-Cingular phone.

BostonIrishGuy, Im new to the forums and thinking of switching from Sprint to Cingular and getting the 6131 - anyways, where is the Nokia forum youre talking about? Can you link the the thread? I haven't been able to find it on google. 'nokia forum' has a lot of hits.

Also, has anyone tried tethering the 6131 to their laptop? What kind of speeds do you get?

$150 for 2 year is correct, $250 for full retail.

Posted by: bobolito

That's correct. $149 for 2-yr contract; $199 for 1-yr contract; $249 for no contract.

$190 is what Cingular pays for the phone.

its wierd, the nokia made it into the stores faster than the moto v3i???

v3i next week-ish

Well my daughter broke my old 6230 today. How is the release of this phone looking. I am trying to decide if I should make an insurance claim on my 6230 or if I should hold off a couple of more weeks and get this phone.

Go ahead and file on your insurance. Sell the replacement and get a 6126. Awsome phone!

I just ordered an unlocked 6131 (I hate the new Samsung I bought when I renewed my contract and couldn't get a new phone from Cingular for about 18 months). I'm really fretting about getting this to work with CIngular - not sure what settings to put in. Now it appears that if i'd only waited a month, I could have bought what looks like a North American version of the 6131 for full price from Cingular. Rotten luck. Is anyone using the 6131 with Cingular and had luck with settings? I'd appreciate any tips.

Thanks. Harry

Nokia will send the settings to your phone in a text and automatically set it up. Go to nokia.com and then go to settings.

You may have to use the 6103 settings. It should work. You may also have to set the phone to send and receive MMS. If you have any problems just ask.

I may have used the 6125 settings? I can't remember.

That should work too.

BTW, there is a guy on Ebay that looks like he is selling a 6126. He took a picture of the menu screen and it has a Cingular logo on it. It looks just like a 6131 and at first it looked like he was selling a 6131 as a 6126, but with the new pictures he posted it looks legit.

Posted by: Antioch18

Coulda just made a custom theme with a Cingular logo and put it on one of the menus. As a matter of fact, thats probably exactly what he did.

For comparison purposes only, how much does the RAZR cost Cingular????? (I was offered the RAZR for free w/ 2 year extension, w/o any rebates.... and when I asked about this phone... I was told it all depends on the cost to Cingular....)

Is the July 5th release date still legitimate?

And does anyone know if Best Buy can order any Cingular phone? My local Best Buy does not carry to whole collection of phones like the cingular store does. I have some gift cards for Best Buy, and I was wanting to use the money on this new nokia. Has anyone had Best Buy order them a cingular phone that was not in stock?

No I would estimate that it is not legit at this point. Maybe, but not likely.

Posted by: darkinfero

this phone is a nice change for nokia i might be looking at it for my upgrade
i hope the release really works out just like the v3i

Posted by: deviantmotoSE

The design of the phone looks interesting. I don't really like how the top half doesn't extend all the way down to cover ALL of the lower section though.

Looks very unfinished IMO.

How so? All the Cingular reps I've spoken with are adamant about it being available the week of July 4th...

Posted by: at&t_hitman

The 6126 is set for technical approval on June 27th. That would make it very difficult for the phone to reach company owned retail by the first week of july. Its fair to say 2nd or 3rd week though.

When the W600i first came out, I wanted to buy it from Best Buy but they didn't have it.

So no, Best Buy doesn't carry the full lineup of Cingular phones. They'll tell you to go to a Corp store if you want one that they don't carry.

Because it has been waiting for a new software load to field test for a little while now. Final version not in the field means it needs at least 1-2 weeks in the field to test before approval which means July 4th is not realistic.

As I said above, I don't think it will be approved then since it isn't even being field tested in final form a week before the date you are giving.

I have a feeling I'm going to ditch my 8125 and buy this phone.

I have this thing where I want a PDA but once I get one I don't want it anymore.. been through 5 now..

I just want a way to keep track of college assignments on a regular phone and itll all be good

They are probably catching on to the 3.70 firmware which just came out. Hopefully, that resolves the known issues posted all over the Nokia forum.

Posted by: kro77

Do you have any links to info about the 3.70 firmware update?

Posted by: CaptShadow

Once released I think I'll let the guinea pigs play with it for about a month. After that, Cingular might actually be able to talk me into a 1yr contract if most of the bugs are worked out.

It is possible for technology to be overkill for some people. Why spend so much money on a device with features that you may not use very much?

Posted by: dday64

Right. I love browsing the web on it, but other than that.. I have a program that keeps track of homework assignments for college.. and I play Jawbreaker. And text message (keyboard is great for that). But it's a big phone, and considering I could sell it for $300-$400..

I just wish there was some homebrew homework assignment program for the normal phones. What OS is this Nokia running?

im thinking of ditching my 8125 for the 6126 too, i dont know if i should sell it or keep it though. i dont know how much id get for it

I got my 6131 today and i'm using it on cingular. so far none of the issues reported in the various threads.

i'm really happy so far, paid 238 plus 30 shipping on ebay, not too bad for what you get.

i wonder how the cingular version will be?

Yea yea. But with college I get lists of when my tests, midterms, finals are in the beginning of the semester. So i like to put them into a program in advance so I know what's needed when down the road..

Ya know? Yea.

These days I think just about any phone comes with a calander and alarms. Is that good enough for you or are you looking for something more?

Personally I need a smart phone for this kind of stuff as I hate inputting the info on anything that is not a qwerty keyboard.

I text message like crazy on any phone, so QWERTY is no problem for me.

And it really depends how in-depth the calendar is. The best example is that on my 8125 my today screen shows me what's coming up for the next few days; when my classes are, if i have an assignment due. So I can do one glance and see what the week holds.

Posted by: dday64

And to get slightly back on topic.. according to phonescoop this Nokia is slightly smaller than my girlfriend's z525, and I really like the size of that phone. Good stuff

I don't think you got that correct. The z525 hasn't been released yet and the Nokia 6126 is larger than that. Maybe you mean the Z500? That was a huge phone!

Posted by: tdawgmd

dday--you'll get what you need out of this phone--it comes with the nokia software that allows you to sync with outlook, and the s40 v3 has an "active" home screen that shows calendar events, tasks, etc. Very similar to the today screen on your 8125. You will be satisfied with it for what you're getting at--your biggest problem will be data entry. T9 is a big step down from a qwerty keyboard, but it'll do.

6131 is intended for the European market. It has IR and FM Radio.

Like I posted earlier my old 6230 finally gave out on me. I was trying to not make an insurance claim and wait for this phone but since it looks like it will be delayed a couple of weeks I guess I will give lockline a call and pick up the 6126 when it finally makes it out.

Just so there is no confusion, this has not been comfirmed. There is good reason to believe that the 6131 and 6126 are functionally the same phone.

funny same here my 6230 is dying and I think this is the closest updated version for my 6230 also

Posted by: dcdttu

If both phones were the same, wouldn't the model number be the same? Maybe I'm wrong on this, but even the 6230 got a 'b' after it because of the 850/900 swap out... Going from 6126 to 6131 seems like they're fraternal, not identical twins...

well hell, you'd think that they would at least make them look different! There are some differences between the 2 on Nokia's site, but it may only be that some features weren't listed for the 6126, such as being able to use the phone for presentations.

Surely there has got to be a difference. Otherwise, it's just loopy!

Posted by: beatniks3

for what it is worth, i was in madison cingular store to make some account changes and i asked the guy if they knew about the 6126. he said the store hasn't recieved any info about the phone. the guy seemed mildly interested in seeing my 6131.
