The Mp3 App post (put all info you know in here)

I've had to search far and wide for information on the best ways to playy mp3's on my v360 (still haven't found a way with all the features I want).

So in this post I'm gonna try to consolidte all the info I have.

The Motorola Digital Audio Player (DAP)

Pros:
-Reads m3u playlists
-When it works it works pretty flawlessly

Cons:
-SLOOOOW to load
-For me freezes up MOST of the time and is unuseable.

Audio Player (built in, audio menu)

Pros:
-Works fairly well
-You can run it in the background so you can do other stuff on the phone while listening to music
-If you edit your outside button functions you can make it so you can skip tracks, or pause, without opening the phone

Cons:
-Doesn't read m3u playlists
-You have to make the playlists on the phone which can be a real pain (especially with a gig of music). First of all when you go to make a playlist it groups most of the folders together, but in random order so you have to go up and down checking the tracks in the right order (if you don't have the track number first in the title, you're SOL). You can reorder them after the playlist is made too.

LightPlayer:
http://mobilesource.ca/downloads/midp.html

Pros:
-Quick,
-Easy
-Looks good
-Plays stuff that messes up in the DAP or the audio menu

Cons:
-As far as I can tell it won't read any mp3's in any subfolders, so to really use it you'd have to have all your tracks in the root folder, which is NOT an option with 20 tracks titled "01-....".
-Doesn't read M3u playlists, seems like this should be an easy fix and would REALLY make the player useable
-You have to use motomidiman to give the program access to your memory card

I have problems with the Motorola DAP in my unbranded L7.
I have three TF cards, all SanDisk. One is the original 128MB, and two added 1GBs. One of the 1GBs will not get past the "Updating Music Directory" stage and just freezes. The other two TF cards work just fine. I can see no difference between the cards as far as my PC is concerned,(I've tried formatting, checking etc many times) so it's probably some critical timing issue between the Java DAP software in the phone and the card itself.
Once the player is working it seems to be fine, although I can just hear some whistles and other stuff going on in the background in the very quiet bits of music. I broke down and bought the Cingular usb/3.5mm adapter so I could use my own headphones. Are the gain edits going to help? I just have the stock values, because the audio is pretty loud enough for me.
Geoff.

That's the same problem I was having.

I did the gain edits and I THINK I can hear a difference, but I could just be fooling myself into it.

ITUNES: http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=260697&st=0 (the best guide I found)

Pros:
-Faster than any of the other options
-Easy to use
-reliable
-you can make your playlists on the computer
-runs in background
-lots of options

Cons:
-Fairly difficult to install (the first time I tried I edited the wrong seem and killed my phone)
-No way to get a menu option for it (it just has to be assigned to a shortcut)
-you have to use mototunes to upload music (it's totally worth it though)
-no track switching/volume adjusting with phone closed as far as I can tell

on the v360, the latest itunes version to work is 1.9 which has a 99 song limit

VERY ANNOYING

2.8.0 loads up and goes into the program, but whenever I try to play music it says "application error" and won't start up again, ******

Are you formatting the card on your phone or on your PC? If on your PC it won't work.

Yes, I formatted the TF cards in the phone, but when the one of the 1GB cards was having some problems, I tried a bunch of tests using the PC - including formatting to FAT. I then tried the card back in the phone to add all the stuff that's added when you do that. I've tried loading the MP3's through the phone connected as a drive (very sloooow), and directly from the PC in a card adapter (about 10 times faster!). Nothing I do seems to make that particular card work past the "Updating Music Directory" stage with the DAP.

Just got the v361 and am having some issues/questions with/about the DAP.

1. Can playlists be created externaly and recognized by the phone? I have tried transfering .m3u playlists but the phone tells me they are "empty"

2. How does the DAP look at mp3 files? The DAP lists all of the songs in the "songs" menu, but lists them by song title rather than by file name. Further it is not able to recgnize either album or artist information from the mp3 files. Since it can see the song name why does it not also read the artist and other info?

Also, the DAP version I have is: 05.00.15 Is this the most current version? If not where can an update be found (and installed).

Thanks.

1. No, as was listed in the "cons" section for the DAP above

2. not sure exactly, I do know it puts them in some really random orders though

3. not sure, since I've been using itunes I haven't even botheres caring about the DAP, even WIth the 99 song limit

I used Real Player to rip some of my whole CD's to mp3, and if you're connected to the web, all the details get included in the album file. Those complete folders, at the top are named for the artist and if you load that under the audio folder into the L7, the DAP recognizes everything - albums, artist and genres. I haven't tried creating playlists yet however. I don't know which version of DAP my L7 has - how can you determine the version?
Geoff.

Update: Although I have not changed any settings on the phone or computer (I did format the TF card) the DAP is now recognizing playlists created externally. As for song related data, it seems to recognize the info on some MP3 files but not on others. Oh well.

To create the playlists on my PC and transfer it to the phone I:

1. Created the playlist using WinAmp (although I'm sure you can use any app you like). 2. Saved the playlist as an m3u file
3. Transferred the relevant files to the phone (connected to the PC as a USB drive), and placed them in the same folder.

Also, the DAP recognized a playlist created with the PC (and saved to the phone) using files already on the phone.

To check the DAP version: Launch the DAP -> Main Menu -> About

Now, is there an easy (and safe) way to set the external buttons to control the DAP while it is running (aside from volume control)? For example, getting the Voice Dial or Smart Key to function as play/pause or mute?

Yes, I have the same DAP version 05.00.15

Anyone any ideas how to set airplane mode in an unbranded L7, other than to set manually an operating band outside the known good ones and then touch the on/off key? I saw this described in another post on this forum somewhere, but I can't find it again. The seem edits don't appear to work apparently, although I haven't tried any yet.

in that post it has a REALLY nice monsterpack that allows you to use later versions of itunes, it's totally worth installing (providing you don't brick your phone of course)

Since this thread was where I first looked to try to find the answer to my broken playlist problem, I thought I'd post this here for anyone who may be monitoring this thread. I wrote a utility to fix playlists so that the DAP on my V360 would work instead of saying that the playlist is empty.

Here's where I've put it for now: http://kd7lrj.googlepages.com/momo-m3u

seriously, if you haven't tried itunes yet, do it, i've tried EVERYTHING and i've been using itunes for a month now and love it

Posted by: jabarnes

I would LOVE to use itunes but again it has the 50 song limit... What frustrates me is that I did have the DAP working when I only had ~300 mb of mp3s on the card, but now that I have ~825 mb the program stalls. I tried installing the older version of DAP 5.0 (i think) but it also hangs at "updating music directory"... any suggestions?

well, you could put a monster pack on the phone, this is a really good one: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=928697

it comes with the 1000 song itunes preinstalled and has a bunch of other great features

I'd highly reccommend using it, it's made the phone SO much bmore useful, if you want/need any more info/programs for doing it, let me know by e-mailing me at thecolorifix@gmail.com

Yes I did. After many attempts, I think that this seemed to work.....
I attached the card directly in XP pro (not in the phone).
I re-formatted to FAT, and then right-clicked the card's drive letter to get to "Properties". I selected "Tools" and then "Check Now". I selected "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and then "Start". It took about 20 minutes to run.
After that I loaded the card back into the phone and turned it on to get the correct file structure back. After loading about 850 Mb of mp3's the card worked fine in the phone. I haven't tried removing files and adding new ones yet to see if it still works with the Motorola DAP - I was just pleased to see that it was working in the first place. One step at a time!

Geoff.
