PPC 6700 Power Adapter

I'm trying to utilize one Mini USB adapter for all my gagets...

My Razr, Bluetooth Headset, Blackberry, etc, all the adapters are 5Volt, 550 mA Output, but the PPC 6700 while still 5volts, it says 1Amp output. If I use this adapter on the other items, will they get smoked?, or alternatively, will the other adapter damage the 6700 because not enough amperage is being "fed" to it?

I was assuming that being mini USB that there was some kind of standard, and the device will deal with the power being fed to it, and the actual adapter is somewhat irrelevant. I'm assuming this because any/all the devices I'm referring to here, will all charge fine with a standard USB / mini USB cable cable connected to a computer.

thanks in advance!

I have been able to charge all three of those devices using a Motorola Car Charger. Have not tried the home charger but it should work. You just won't be able to use the Blackberry car charger on all. I tried that. Not enough amperage is ok but too much can cause problems. It might not get smoked but it could possibly charge the battery too fast causing battery life issues.

It should not be an issue as long as the plug is a 5-pin mini-USB connector. USB allows a device to draw up to 500mA. If it tries to draw more than that, the hub or PC can cut it off.

BTW, keep in mind that it's the device that draws the current, not the adapter that pushes it, so when you see an adapter that says 5V, 1A it means that it can supply up to 1A of current. If the device only needs 100mA, that's all that's going to be used.

You should be fine using the 1 amp charger with the other devices. I have found the 1amp charger charges my 500Ma devices faster than there regular chargers. Actually I have been looking for a 1amp car charger so that I can charge all my devices in the car at the same time. I think most battery chargers will use as much current as they can to charge, and it only lowers the current as the battery heats up.

After spending hundreds of dollars on your PPC device, I think you should spend the extra few dollars for an original UTSTARCOMM charger, the price is from 15-20 dollars for that item. Some razr chargers work well, other's don't but it's a small investment.

While I appreciate your response, the main purpose for asking was to hopefully utilize ONE USB home charger, and ONE USB lighter adapter for my BT headset, RAZR, and UTStarcom 6700. They don't all run out of battery at the same time, and if it won't damage any of the devices, its definitely much more convenient to carry two adapters, vs potentially 6!

I use my computer and a mini-usb cable as an extra charger

so just to recap, i can use my Moto H700 charger to charge the phone?

edanuff has the right answer. The Key to this question is the Voltage. As long as all devices are rated for 5 volts then you will be safe to use the 1 amp charger on all of them.

The nameplate ratings on a charger reflect the maximum capacity of the charger, so if it says 5 volts 1 amp it will supply 1 amp of current at 5 volts. If you connect a device that on requires 0.5 amps (500 milliamp) it will only draw 0.5 amps.

Now having said all that some devices will draw more amperage than the 'normal' charger will supply but typically they won't draw more than they can use and as the battery is charged the amperage drawn reduces. The ability to provide higher amperage is how the "Rapid" chargers work.

The thing that reduces the life of the battery is that as it charges the temperature of the battery increases causing the 'break down' of the material that the battery is made of. So you should monitor the temperature of the battery as you charge it. If it feels abnormally hot stop charging. I don't mean if the battery gets warmer than normal but actually feels hot, so don't panic if it gets a little warm during the charge. This break down of the material is why as a battery get 'older' it feels warming while charging.

A way to determine the normal charging temp would be to run the battery way down then charge it using the original wall charger or car charger. About 15 minutes after you start charging feel the battery to determine how hot it gets. Do this a couple of times to get a feel for the 'normal' charging temp then repeat using the 'larger' charger and feel the difference.

This info is based on 20 years of experience and training on batteries and their operations in the Navy. I maintained batteries there that were 40 feet long x 25 feet wide x 6 feet high. We used charging rates in the thousands of amps.

I have been using my motorolla travel charger to charge my 6700, and i noticed that the charger is getting extremely hot. So i think it is safe to say that a 1amp charger can be used with a 500ma device, but be carefull using a lower rated charger with a high current device. It may cause the charger to over heat and burnout.

So do rapid chargers really work?

Posted by: bajajoe

yes and if you notice most car chargers are rapid chargers.

hi i have a quick question. I have xv6700, the original charge is 5 v and 1 amp. somtimes my battery will get hot. I think it should be 0.1 MA or 800 MA.. 1 amp is too much and it will make the battery hotter. any one know why my battery is too hot when i am charging.

Posted by: bajajoe

This is normal and if you noticed some phones get hot to when you use them.
