Razr V3c firmware problem

I bought a Razr V3c after I renewed my contract with Alltel and my dad also got the same exact phone on the same exact day (also Alltel).
Simply put I couldn't get my phone to be recognized by MPT/P2k etc. until I plopped the battery in/out, now it all works grand (absolute latest update for MPT).
So my dad wants ringtones, I go to hook his phone up and made sure to re search for the modem and detect the phone and it's not recognizing the phone. Windows knows a mobile modem is connected but nothing else beyond that. I already tried shutting it off/taking battery out/verbally degrading it but nothing works.
His firmware version is gatw_4.06.00r mine is gatw_3.16.01p.
Any ideas? Is the firmware too recent and MPT hasn't made an update for it?
