V3i speakerphone help

when I make calls on the V3i while on speakerphone, my voice gets cut off when we both parties talk simultaneously. This means the phone acts more like a walkie talkie only allowing for one way conversation....... There is no issues when using the handset.......
Anyone has any idea what is happening?
