Hi All

I am starting this thread to help solve a problem that has come about with E398 and Transflash cards over the stock 64meg.
I just got my E398 and then got a 512meg card; the phone would not read the card. After a lot of searching the net and calls to Motorola(who blame the card) and Sandisk(who blame the phone) I was told the phone will only accept a card up to 256meg and if you are lucky and got a freak E398 it will read any size(the larger the slower the phone).
I formatted the card to FAT32 and FAT system and tried most all the software flashes on the market all to no success, I did find that if the card had 10+ MP3 and the original Mobile folder from my 64 card the phone will acknowledge the card BUT not read the data off it and tell me the data is corrupt and when I try to format it from the phone it would tell me the “device is locked and not accessable”.Motorola said it is a software problem and needs to be updated.
I have now found that the phone is under warranty and tomorrow will take it in to get fixed and I will tell you all what it is that is causing the problem, and what the latest factory software is.

Regards.

Hi All

My E398 is in the shop for software update and if all goes well and it is only a software problem then I should get it back tomorrow.

Today I called the service center about the E398 and told it was all ok, I went in and ho ho ho it was exactly the same(even after they said that fixed and tested it.
I do know that the latest official software update is 99R.
I now have to wait another 10 days for them to look at it again.
12 years of owning Nokia never a problem and 4 weeks of owning a Motorola and all I get is the run around and everyone passing the buck??. I will let you know how it turns out.

Regards

Hi All

After lengthy emails back and forth this is the reply from Motorola in regards to E398 with Transflash card problems..

"The E398 was only originally ever intended to work with a 128 mb card. The repair centre can amend this but it does require the changing of components inside the handset. This is why you need to send the phone back to the repair centre because a software upgrade will not fix this issue you the actual handset changed to fix this issue."

So it seems that the info on the from Motorola and Sandisk is mostly incorrect and it must only be late model E398(of freaky ones)that will accept cards over 128.

My E398 is in getting the mod now and when it gets back I will let you all know how it went.

HI,dear friend.
i come from china,i buy the e398 which was made by the china-factory of motorolas.
At the web site (http://bbs.imobile.com.cn) ,somebody say E389 can support 512M TF-card ,but i don't know the software's edition number.

but i can be sure of it supported 256M TF-card by 95R_A .

Hi All

I got my E398 back today it had a component change, and it will now read a 256 card ok(I hope to be able to test a 516 or higher to verify that it will read above a 256 card), I had tried most all Flash files and none worked.
So for some it is luck as to which E398 you get and if it will read above a 64 or 128, and a hardware mod is needed if not. The repair I got from the agent was AU$45 this included a new Volume switch, so if you have a E398 that wont read over a 128 card you can have a component mod at a reasonable cost to fix it.

P.S The joystick UP and DOWN now won’t always work so I have to take it back AGAIN!.

Hi All

I just fitted a 512 micro sd (not a genuine Sandisk) it works fine, it is GR8 to get over 170 songs, So it is possible if your E398 wonr read cards to have it modded(Factory) to accept larger cards. It must be a factory fault as my repair was warranty.....

Cheers...
