Audiovox 6700 3 month review

I've had the phone for three months now. I just use it as a phone and for the email. I'm not into hacking and such although I did (thanks to a post in this forum ) figure out how to make songs into ringtones... that was the extent of my hacking skills.
Downsides of the phone are many I'm afraid. The battery isn't powerful enough to last a whole day. With the default setting of checking email every 15 minutes, maybe 20 minutes of talk time and reading email a few to several times I'd be down to almost nothing (less than 20%) by the end of the day- and not a long day either. This is with the screen disabled when not in use by the way.
The mini sd card slot... touch the top of the phone and the card pops out and is lost forever. They should've placed the slot somewhere that isn't so easily unintentionally pressed. If you get the phone rig something to prevent the loss of your card.
The battery door- same thing- it comes off with the slightest pressure. Tape it over to keep it from getting lost. I use a nice leather belt pouch and the battery door comes off every time I pull the phone out of the pouch.
The biggest downside though is the power button. To save battery power you disable the touchscreen. You can set it up so that the only way to re-enable the screen is to hit the power button. Unfortunately the power button is too easy to push and the device was powering up unbeknownst to me- making calls all by itself on too many occasions. Using any other button to re-enable made it even easier to inadvertently power up. This whole problem could be solved by making it so you have to hold the power button down for a couple seconds instead of a momentary tap.
Ringer volume should be a little louder. Earpiece volume is fine- but with the Motorola Bluetooth earpiece it's a little low for me. Probably a Motorola issue and not 6700.
The unit gets email pretty well although there are random delays on occasion- sometimes the unit will go a few hours without getting any email even though there are messages on the server. This happens when I'm in a good local coverage area.
The big problem with email though is about one out of five times the unit hangs when trying to display an email message. I assume this is a Windows issue but it's consistent and very annoying. I either have to [soft] reboot or go into system/memory/running programs and shut down email and then start it all over again.
Hope this helps someone out there
Greg

Battery does suck however I do keep wifi on all day at work (why use my data when I can use there's lol). Also maybe the battery would'nt be so damn bad if they lowered the vib function a bit, the thing vib's for about 5 seconds it seems which is WAY too much for ANY phone. If someone know's a hack for this please let me know.

Do the Hard->Soft Reset to cancel the Verizon software install - and get rid of the buggy, limiting verizon software. Method is outlined on this board (see links):

I am having a problem with receiving e mail when roaming. When you try to "get" it, it says connecting and then says disconnecting. Is that a roaming issue or what. The thing was purchased to get my e mail on the go but so far I can't get it on the go at all. Have any ideas?

Wish I could help you but I just don't know dpstk.

I think the problem is that Verizon does not support the new "office sync" from Alltel. I guess I will have to set up Outlook on the regular POP service for Bellsouth. Any recomendations on a good third party SMTP relay service?

why not use the wireless sync from verizon if they are who you use.... push or readysync, it works great for me... no enterprise server - all you do is load the monitor software on the PC that gets your email and always leave it on...

I use Alltel. I think the problem is that the sync isn't supported across carriers.

Here's the fix for the 4-second vibration: When you set an event notification to a ringtone AND vibrate, the vibration only lasts as long as the ringtone. It gives you the long one when you say no ringtone and only vibrate. So... I created a one-second wav file with no sound and a half-second version of the same. I have the "new email" notification set to the half-second "silent" ring with vibrate. I have the "new voicemail" notification set to the one-second "silent" ring with vibrate. Here are the files for those who want to do the same. Put the wav files in the "My Sounds" directory on the device.

Dropped in the My Sounds on the device, however they are not showing up under the sound area in my "sounds & notifications?" Did I miss something?

EDIT: Figured it out, the power of the soft reset at my finger tips.
