Joystick mod for ALL Sony Ericsson joysticks! (pics of the new one!)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: maxh2

You've likely seen my other thread on joystick caps:
http://207.210.82.132/showthread.php?t=832609

Well, I've made some more with a new design, and the ebay listing is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Joystick-cap-fi...QcmdZ ViewItem

I decided to start a new thread because the old one kind of centers around it being a mod for the w800i, and it turns out that they fit the k750i joystick as well. And that means that these joystick caps will fit just about all of the current and upcoming Sony Ericsson joystick phones out there!

I was browsing the pics of Sony Ericsson phones at http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson-phones-19.php and it looks like all phones with joysticks use one of two models: the one the w800i uses, or the one the k750i uses.
Models with the w800i joystick include: w800i, d750, and w700
Models with the k750i joystick include: k750i, k790, k800, k510, k310, and the old k700, k600, k300, k508, k500, j210, j300, j200, and f500i

Here's some pics of my phone with the new cap on it, and some pics of the k750 with the old cap on it (thanks to Blakthorn!), as well as a k750 joystick from cnn.cn with the new joystick on it:

Posted by: huck-guai

nice job.......what about the w810? it has "play" and "pause" icon there. Could you keep that visible somehow?

Posted by: orion

the w810 uses a d-pad, not a joystick...

maxh, just ordered one

Posted by: Lordkifar

U won't regret this order ....A very different feeling with the joystick cap.

Posted by: Phat^Trance

looks really nice

Posted by: Kricket

wow - i saw the other thread but didnt comment there - i just want to say - EXCELLENT job - both of those look FANTASTIC - if i still had my w800 - i would order one up in a heartbeat

kudos

Posted by: Junglizt1210

nice job indeed!! too bad I sold both my k750i and w800i......

Posted by: maxh2

To all of you who placed orders this weekend: Your caps were picked up by the mailman this morning (Monday). International destinations typically take 4-7 days, and it seems that U.S. shipments average 2-3 days.

Let me know how you like them!

Posted by: anokewee

Hi do you charge $1 as well to ship it to Singapore?

Oh yeah one more do u need any glue or something to make sure it's in place? I need to find out so that i can get it out without damaging the joystick when i sell it in future...

Posted by: christomapher

I like the look for the K750i, looks good.

How often do you drop your phone?

Posted by: maxh2

Yes, $1.00 will get it to Singapore. You don't need glue, they are tight enough to stay on just by pushing (for the most part, anyways). I have a w800i, and I've put joysticks on and off countless times without any damage. I've only put one on a k750 joystick once, so I don't know much about how they hold up. Perhaps someone with one can comment?

Christomapher, I never drop my phone; sometimes when I'm away from home I get really hungry, though!

Heh heh, JK, it's not my k750 in the pics.

Posted by: fiish

The K750i IS a delicious-looking candybar

Posted by: DIXIEBELLE

Definitely a great addition to these phones. I have the new one and it fits terrifically and is really sweet looking too. It just makes it so much easier to use the joystick with my silicon case on it.

Posted by: Taskism

I got this one for my phone today, and it fit perfect. I had a problem with the other version, but this one fits excellent. Looks awesome. Thanks man.

Posted by: Cryptik

Just got it 2day... it took a few seconds to get it straight.. n 1 gentle push n voila its in.... wow.. its a New experience altogether.... amazing mod.... MUST HAVE FOR THE JOYSTICK USER....

thanks Max

Posted by: orion

I also received it today. Easy to install and looks great on my K750. Great for guys with big thumbs like me hehe - awesome mod maxh!

Posted by: dragion

I got mine via USPS today too.

Very easy to install...I just pressed down on the joystick and voilą! Perfect fit!

It look OEM and works great. Navigating through the menus are now much more precise and mistakes are greatly minimized.
Anyone who owns a W800/K750 should highly consider this mod.

Thank you William

Posted by: fiish

Just received mine in the mail today - looks like USPS are fast crossing the Atlantic!

Installation was a cinch, although I put it on crooked a few times. Finally I got it on quite straight, well very slightly off but I think it's good enough for now.

Feel with the joystick was greatly improved, but it's quite different from before: where I used to push the joystick in one direction I now pull by pushing the cap edge. The larger contact surface reduces the chance of mistakes; it no longer goes in a direction even if I don't ensure an accurate press.

Only (minor) gripe, which is probably just me anyway, was the difficulty in getting it on straight

Posted by: anishf1

Just received mine this morning too,(PG19). Fits beautifully, clicks perfectly into place. Beautiful design, looks part of the phone rather than an addon !

It is now far easier to navigate with and much more accuarate! Thanks alot mate!

I really do recommed buying....
(Just checked eBay for the listing... only 3 left!with 4hours go!Get it while you can guys!)

Cheers,
PG19

Posted by: fiish

Just an update to what I wrote before: as I mentioned, the mod improves the feel a lot. However, my mate, who was interested in getting one for himself, tried mine out and didn't think the same. He has smaller thumbs than mine, though. So I could infer that this mod might not be so suitable for people with smaller hands.

Also, I've noticed my 'left' and 'up' aren't as responsive as before (need harder push)... I think I damaged my joystick while installing it, so I advise fellow buyers to install it carefully, (try to get it striaght the first time, I needed a few tries).

Posted by: maxh2

I have relisted 10 more on ebay for those of you that contacted me after the last listing ended. Here it is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...item=9139244291

fiish, are you sure the joystick is seated correctly? I've had caps on and off of my joystick probably 50 times, literally, and have not had any change in sensitivity. Sometimes when I pull one off, the joystick lifts up and doesn't seat itself correctly. When this happens, it doesn't work right, until I wiggle it around and get it to seat properly.

Posted by: fiish

Hey, you're right! I pulled the joystick up (but not hard enough to take the cap off) and reseated the joystick, and everything seems to have gone back to normal Cheers!

Posted by: Blue-Bear

i got mine today in the mail, great mod! finally all the directions on my joystick are responsive! Love the mod, haven't tried pulling it off yet, hopefully that shouldn't be a problem.

Putting it on was so simple took a couple of seconds and then the experience changes after that!

Thanks maxh!

Posted by: Blakthorn

Hey guys, these are a great idea and work great too.

the k750 in the pics is actually mine phone and what can I say, the first 3 months I didnt drop it at all, after the 1st scratch, the next few drops dont seem so bad

Posted by: xtacy

da joystick mod for the w800 looks sweet man....keep it up....n boy did that k750 look beat up...

Posted by: Tehy

good job! That looks really nice!

Posted by: icecubesyum

When are there going to be more? I just bought another K750 for an upcoming vacation and I'd love to have it soon.

I would like to buy one more too for my K608i. Hopefully it works on this phone.

This mod is a nice addition to my K750 & W800.

Posted by: maxh2

Hey guys, I'm just about out of them right now, so I'm not going to relist them yet. I've been really busy lately and I probably will continue to be, but I'm hoping I can get a chance to make more next weekend. So I think there's a good chance I'll have them relisted by next Monday.

Posted by: prometheus

I just got my joystick for the K750. The only thing I have to say is, it fits great and feels great. Pleasure doing business with you Max, thanks again.

Posted by: axiochris

just got a w800. never dealt with the SE joystick before, its really sucks..hahaha

subscribing. let us know when you have more!

Posted by: Ksolo12

Yeah, please post when the next batch are complete. I got one for my W800i & K750i and they work great.

I need one last one for my K608i

Thanks again.

Posted by: ou7shined

Interesting! I'm getting a gamers blister on the side of my thumb from this wee pin of a joystick, so I should probably get one too. What would be the shipping to the UK?

Posted by: fiish

More feedback after a week and a half's use of the cap:

It makes a lot of difference. Less force is needed to move the joystick now, so it's easier on the fingers, particularly when playing games. The joystick sits higher now and it took some getting used to, especially pressing the joystick down, but it was made much smoother thanks to the increased size of the thing It feels good and solid thanks to the metal construction, and when using it, most of the dirt from my hands now falls in the middle of the joystick instead of down into the housing.

One of the most useful phone mods I've tried so far

Posted by: Haribolman

Thanks Max...I've been using the joystick cap for nearly a week and it's great! It makes the joystick feel more like a d-pad, which just goes to show that SE got it wrong in the first place!

The cap improves feel, accuracy and response. Much less presses in the wrong direction! Especially handy if you use a silicon case.

Good one Max!!

Posted by: lufia1

please make some more, i need one now since the orange rubber fell off mine

Posted by: maxh2

Hi guys (and gals),

I'm in the middle of making some more and should have them done tonight. I'll relist them tonight or tomorrow and email/PM everybody that contacted me.

Max

Posted by: maxh2

OK, I finally relisted them here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...item=9147718335
I have both types (hole through and no hole), but I prefer to sell the ones with the through-hole. They are almost guaranteed to fit everybodies joystick caps because they can press as far onto the (slightly tapered) joystick as they need to to fit snugly. But if you really want one of the ones with the solid top, just send me a message when you check out and I'll send you one of those instead. I've only had a couple that didn't fit peoples joysticks, and I sent them one of the 2nd generation through-hole caps as a replacement which fit well.

Max

Posted by: lufia1

i hope to get mine soon , these look great. i think you should advertise on esato and http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=287786 cause i think many people would appreciate this mod.

Posted by: lufia1

item sent! just have to wait for it now

Posted by: Lawson1024

Don't suppose anybody knows if this would fit the k800i when it's released, or even if there's any need for it?

Posted by: maxh2

It's highly likely that it will fit the k800i. In fact, it will most likely fit all Sony Ericsson joysticks, because they all seem to have the same joystick as either the w800i or the k750i, and they fit both of those.

BTW, the latest listing for them is here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...item=9150412780

Max

Posted by: icanttype

these are awesome good job

Posted by: DrKnute

I will definitely be purchasing one when it is confirmed that this will fit the K790/K800.

Posted by: ou7shined

Mine arrived yesterday and I have to say I'm completely satisfied with it. Who would would have thought that something so small could revolutionise the joystick experience. Gone are the days of missed or false presses. I'm not exaggerating when I say that all presses now are positive to feel and are achieved with the lightest of touches (something that will take getting used to while speedily entering text) and therefore hopefully lengthening the lifetime of the suspect joystick itself.
My only reservation is that because of the high standard of machining involved in the production of this "polished" tool it can be a bit slippy under your thumb. To resolve this I masked off the surrounding areas of the button so as not to scratch the handset (didn't want to go through the fiddleyness of taking it off then putting it back on) then used a very fine wet/dry sandpaper to create an unnoticeable but effective matt finish on the topmost surface of the button. I'm not sure of technical capabilities of producing this tool but, perhaps a future development could be to introduce a crosshatched or textured surface. BTW how do you make it, do you have the smallest milling machine in the world?
Oops, looks like this turned in to more of an essay than a simple "cheers".

Posted by: StuPC

Just got one of Max's joytick mods for my w800...and I'm remarkably pleased with it.
First of all, I'm in the UK and it arrived here within THREE DAYS of me paying for it - so very well done for that, Max!

Second, and more importantly, the mod itself works just great. I used to have problems with the joystick being a bit to sensitive about which direction you pushed it in (often mistaking "mostly-up" for left or right) and I don't get that any more, it makes the joystick a lot more forgiving of careless pushing.

Third, the phone just looks nicer!

So thank you very much, Max - I promised the folks on the Esato Sony-Ericsson forums I'd let them know how my "brave experiement" went, and I'll be giving you a full 10/10!

Posted by: eLiguL

Just put in my order for one.

Cant wait for it I play a lot of games on my k750

Posted by: Gfunk333

just order one after one after reading this post. hope it gets here soon.

Posted by: maxh2

Thanks for the reviews!

Quote:

Although a lathe would be the expected machine tool to use for such a part, since I didn't have access to a CNC one, I did use a milling machine in a rather unorthodox manner! I held the metal in the spindle and clamped the tools to the table.

Posted by: cow07

Can anyone post some pictures of the k750i with the new model of this joystick?
I know there are pictures with it on just the joystick, but a better picture with the new one would be awesome for those that are considering the new one over the old.

The second picture from the top is a very clear picture of the new model on a k750 joystick. The old model he no longer offers.

Posted by: StuPC

Nothing terribly startling, but here's my w800 with glorious new joystick cap...

Posted by: Cat1024

Will anymore of these be available? I'm interested in purchasing the K750 one.

Posted by: chops

me too.....

Posted by: maxh2

OK, I relisted some more:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

StuPC: Nice pics!

cow07: I'm sorry, I don't have other pics of the new one on a k750 joystick, and that's about the best my lame camera could do. Hopefully someone else can post some.

P.S. I do have some of the 1st gen. caps also, and I am willing to sell them. I prefer the 2nd gen caps, though, because they are almost guaranteed to fit. Since they are open all the way through, they can push on as far as they need to snug up on the tapered joystick. The 1st gen caps are still good though. There have only been a couple of people who had them not fit. So there's probably a 95% chance that they will fit any given joystick. (The 2nd gens have fit everybody's)

So yes, I still will sell the 1st gen ones. Especially to people that had the orange dot fall out of their joystick!

Posted by: Gfunk333

Well I got mine in the mail today. Took only 3 days to get to Toronto, thx Max. Anyways it fits like charm. The cap makes the joystick feel really smooth and soft. Little to no pressure to toggle it around. Its also make the joystick feel rounder, and lets your thumb sits comfortably. Took about a minute to get use to it. If you play a lot of games with the joystick....like I do on the subway.....you'll love it. Its makes the movements more reponsive, faster, smmother ... and overall less effort is required. Really impressed what this little cap can do. Highly recommended. Heres a pic I took with my sharp. I'll post some up close macro shoots later.

Posted by: pachi

does it ever come off with wear and tear?

Posted by: Gfunk333

no. non that i've noticed. infact the first thing i did when i put it on, was make sure i was ablt to take it off. did this a few times with out any problems, and now its staying on permenantly.

Posted by: pachi

would the joystick adapter for the k800/790 with the k750 adapter?

Mine hasn't, and I carry my phone around in various pockets all the time.

Posted by: lufia1

these caps are ownage, i've got the one with no hole on because the orange rubber fell off. keeps lots of the dust off. perfecto

Posted by: eLiguL

Just got mine today and here to share my initial thoughts.

Opened the envelope and was surprised to see just how to small it was. Took me about 10 tries to get it on straight (it was a lot harder then I thought it would be). Now that it is on straight and having played a few joystick intensive games I must say that if you do play a lot of games on your phone this is a must have.

Cheers!

Posted by: ou7shined

Max. I was wondering, considering the buzz over these buttons, if you knew where your nearest Patent Office is?

the joystick cap also fits on the K800i:

Also, thanks to Max for this great mod and for making so many!

Thanx a lot for the fast delivery. Btw. I did some advertising for your joystick cap and wrote a little review in german at Telefon-Treff.de.

Posted by: Lawson1024

Mine arrived today, I got the 1st gen cap as it wouldn't show the top of my joystick, as i don't have w800i anyway, looks real nice on my k800i.

Thanks

Posted by: maxh2

For those of you still asking about these, I've relisted them. Here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

This has really been a lot of fun seeing these things go all over the world. Thank you, to all of you!

Just pull it off with ur finger nails. Your gonna need to tug on it pretty hard tho.

Posted by: maxh2

eLiguL is right, just pull it off. Sometimes if you pull hard, the joystick will lift up and become unseated. When this happens, just move it around until it falls in place. I've done it probably 100+ times on my phone.

You could also try taking the phone apart without removing it. I don't remember for sure, but I think I designed them so that they will just barely fit through the hole in the case for this reason.

Posted by: shaggy_x

any more listings of this??

Posted by: Phat^Trance

is it hard to put this on. do i have to remove the old joystick.or is more like a add on...

Posted by: reelcrazy

Its an add on which slips over the current joystick essentially giving it a wider top.

Posted by: maxh2

For those of you still looking for these, I've just relisted the few I have left right now here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

Unfortunately, that's all I have at this time, but I'm going to try to make more soon. Possibly this weekend. One of my tools broke last time I was making them, though, so I'll have to make a replacement one of those first!

Posted by: katatonia

is there any way that you can accept cash on delivery?
i don't have any credit card.

are you going to give this one too?

or just the joystick?

p/s : sorry for too much asking

Posted by: maxh2

Money order through the mail is fine. Pretty much any type of payment is OK with me.
I'll PM you right now.

are you going to give this one too?

Perhaps I should include a disclaimer: "Everything pictured is NOT included!"
It'll just be the joystick cap, but I guess it doesn't hurt to try!

Posted by: katatonia

oops!!
unfortunately~
but i'm still interested in getting that joystick cap

Posted by: shaggy_x

sold out

luckily i ordered one and its on its way

Posted by: maxh2

OK, I made some more yesterday. Just the through-hole ones. Here's the listing:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...em=160016857881

Posted by: Kricket

awesome! just ordered mine

Posted by: toymachine2009

i am not sure if this cap fixes the problem. Yes i do see dust on my joystick but it doesnt look like it can really get into the phone to effect it. I think the cap may make it easier to move the joystick hence its bigger and bulkier. But i think its just a mechanical failure with how these were manufactured.

so i am not sure if these caps really solve the whole joystick problem

Posted by: christomapher

We shall see.

You are right. My joystick was normal then I put on the cap now my JS is starting to lose functionality. I am in no doubt that the two incidences are unrelated. I think my JS was going to go anyway. But in certainty the cap aids movement of the JS 100%.

Posted by: toymachine2009

ya so if it doesnt fix the problem what does it do?

Posted by: Kricket

just want to say that i got mine in today and its awesome - slipped on without any troubles and it seems to be on there pretty tight - im happy with it

it actually does help out a lot!

thanks!

Hi Max, I wanted to thank you again for coming up with this joystick cap idea, best money spent on a mod! The k800 joystick is a lot less effort to work with and navigating the menus are so much quicker and easier. I think it also looks pretty slick to boot!

This auction is for the ones with the hole all the way through, but I do have a few of the other type. If you want one with a solid top, send me an email upon purchasing stating so, and I'll send you one. If I don't receive any special request, I'll ship the 2nd generation one (through-hole).

Posted by: maxh2

Wow, nice pics, indeed! Thanks!

Due to popular demand, I have relisted here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Joystick-cap-fi...1QQcmdZViewItem

The difference between the new ones (through-hole) and the original ones (solid-top) is mainly cosmetic, though the new ones do tend to fit a little bit better, so I tend to recommend them. Either one will fit any Sony Ericsson joystick. The original solid top one can be seen on Blakthorn's k750i in the pics at the very end of my ebay listing (above link).

It sure is clean and pro looking guys.

I love my w810's dpad and just could not compare how well it works vs. my stock k800i's joystick. Up until I installed this joy cap the best way for me to describe it is the k800 now feels like it has a miniature d-pad

Posted by: ultra99

that's nice....but is there really a huge difference bt the dpad and the joystick?

i would go for it but those dpads are not sold here...

OK, I've relisted some more here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Joystick-cap-fi...1QQcmdZViewItem

lufia1, that's weird, my joystick has never creaked. I don't know what could cause it to do such a thing. I would suggest gently moving it around in a circular motion to all of the extremes a few times to make sure it is properly seated, and maybe blowing/cleaning it out with compressed air, just in case there's something stuck under there that's rubbing and causing the creaking. There's always the possibility that your phone is getting old/worn, and a slight flexing of the plastic case is causing rubbing, and therefore creaking. Do you use it heavily?

Posted by: xxilikericexx

i really wanna order one but would it ever come off the joystick?

Posted by: anotherbrick

I'm curious if these will fit on a T637? It's not explicitly mentioned and since it's a rather old model, I'm not sure if the joystick is the same as either the K750 or W800 joysticks.

It won't fall off accidentally, but if you want it off, a firm pull will remove it.

Unfortunately, I don't think it will fit a t637, as it looks like a completely different joystick. Square, rather than round. Almost all of the recent and current Sony Ericsson joystick phones have the same joystick (onto which it does fit) though.

Although, I suppose there is a remote possibility that the distance from corner to opposite corner of the square joystick might be the same as the diameter of the round joysticks. I sure wouldn't bet on it though.

Here's a pic of a t637:

There's always the possibility that your phone is getting old/worn, and a slight flexing of the plastic case is causing rubbing, and therefore creaking. Do you use it heavily?

nah i don't use it alot. It squeaks abit when i move up. Tried rotating it. I see what happens, if it gets worse which i think is very unlikely i guess i have to try your compressed air method or just open it to see whats causing it.

Now that i think about it, the squeaking happened before i started using the joystick . Just relized the tiny squeaking when comparing the phone with my friends. its not a problem, sometimes im just picky

Just got a 2nd gen cap for my k800i. Had a 1st gen one but didn't quite like the look. This one suits the phone much better, looks so much better than standard too. Also feels better than the 1st gen one, more 'grippy'.

Only complaint was that it seemed almost slightly too big, not that it fell off or anything, but it sat kinda low. The top of the joystick was protruding slightly and it looked a little odd. I'm guessing this has something to do with having the original cap on for a while, perhaps scraping the tiniest amount of the joystick?

anyway, I put a small amount of sellotape around the joystick to thicken it up slightly and it works like a charm, fits perfectly and looks fantastic. Thanks a lot!

Posted by: 0716

Hi

I ordered one of these mods last week and just wanted to add my tuppence worth regarding the fitting of the mod on a K800i Joystick. First, the service was excellent and very cost effective - thanks Max

I fiitted the mod exactly as stated but have had difficulties with it so have temporarily removed it pending further advice. I placed the mod over the joystick and pressed firmly down. However when then using the joystick I noticed that it wasn't as free as before and it's movement was impaired. I could access menus moving the joystick left and right ok, but had to press hard to access menus moving it down. Trying to access menus moving it upwards was impossible.

Maybe I pushed the mod too far on to the joystick? I know people on here have successfully used the mod on their K800i joysticks - could they please give me their experiences on the joystick's movement, "post-fitting".

TIA

Roz

looks excellent

Posted by: y2bandit

I plan on getting a w810i when my contract with Nextel is over. Will this still be available for sale sometime in the beginning of October?

Posted by: zkool448

hi y2bandit, the w810 phones have dpads. the Joystick cap only applies to SE phones that have joysticks

Posted by: y2bandit

I thought the w810i does have a joystick?

*EDIT* I guess you can disregard then. I just took a closer look at the w810i pics. I guess the only mod would be to put the k750 back housing on to the w810. Thanks again.

Posted by: Chaser-1

I, too, have the same problem as rozel. Max, could you chip in some advice here? Thanks in advance.

Posted by: Lawson1024

Rozel, chaser.............mine was like this. I think maybe the latest batch are very slightly larger than the previous ones, and thus are sitting slightly lower on the stick. If you use something to add a tiny amount of girth (no s******s please) to the joystick, you'll find it fits quite nicely.

I'm sure I said this 9 or 10 posts back, ah well

Posted by: maxh2

Hmmm, very interesting...
The last batch all fit perfectly on my w800i and on the k750i joystick I have. But if they are pushing on too far as they would if the hole was too big/joystick too small, that would definitely cause the problem you've had.

The top of the joystick should not protrude out of the hole of the cap. It should be level with the bottom of the chamfer (or at least close).

If any of you have this problem (or any other problem) with your cap, let me know and you can exchange it for one of the solid top ones which will certainly not push on too far (I have them in stock right now), or you can wait a few days and when I make more of the through hole ones, I'll make a handful that are a tad bit undersize just for those of you that have small joysticks. Also, I'm always willing to give full refunds on returns if anyone has a problem and that's the way they want to go. Thankfully this very rarely happens!

Posted by: Chaser-1

I might just take you up on that exchange Max. I'll shoot out an email in your direction soon.

Posted by: shanespencer

Just want to say that I got my joystick cap today in the post, and it's excellent! It took less than a week to get here from the US, which isn't bad at all, knowing the English postal system.

Anyway, I fitted the cap in a matter of seconds, and it works perfectly! My phone is much more comfortable to use now - thanks a lot, Max!

If you haven't already ordered one of these, get one NOW.

yes PLEASE make more!! I really want to get one of these for my K790a... I LOVE American ingenuity!

Posted by: huskyfan23

I need me one of these!

Posted by: jtcb

Is it easy to remove after installing it? I mean if I push the ring/pin to deep and need to adjust it later. Also, you might need to remove it if you need to send the phone for service as modifying anything will viod warranty.

Posted by: Lawson1024

I don't think a push on cap will void the warranty

Posted by: carsmovies

I recently got the cap from max and I love it. Very nice to use and looks good too.

Posted by: McLaren_F1

Which Ones Do you Guys have? The Ring Type one or the Cap one?

Posted by: tjmonkey15

Does this thing leave any scuff marks on the original joystick when you take it off? That would sorta suck. It looks good though......now i just need to get my k790

I got both but prefer the one with the hole.

My "up" has stopped working properly and when I finally get around to sending my phone off to be fixed then I'll take off the cap for sure, because there's the remote likely-hood of them saying that fitting the cap caused the problem even though it started going dodgy before that.

Posted by: Lawson1024

ou7shined - Yes the cap will just pull off

tjmonkey15 - Unfortunately (at least on mine) the cap does leave a mark, an 'engraved' line

Posted by: jtcb

Can someone post pics of both versions on K790? Is Max currently selling the cap or ring one? The cap has two-piece and the ring one has one-piece?

Posted by: McLaren_F1

In his last auction he was selling the ring one (which i got). you have to request the "cap" one. not sure if its extra charge.

Posted by: Lawson1024

jtcb, I have both versions. I can tell you without question that the ring looks better. I originally purchased the solid cap version, believing it would suit the k800i better.

I was wrong

It comes in a small simple envelope so there's no worries about taxes.

This is the problem with this Mod on a K800i. I have pulled it up a little so that the "Up" will work again but after a little use the mod slips down the joystick once more preventing the "Up" from working once more.

So does that mean the cap one will work better because it sits on top of the joystick and won't slip? Ring one looks better though.

Max, how can we solve the slipping problem? Any plan of modifying the ring design?

Posted by: Jimmyleaf24

Yeah i tried looking for this item on ebay without any success. I even tried looking at his old auction and seeing if he has any other items for sale but it says he doesnt.

It appears to be a slight problem with a single batch, a tiny bit too large. Max has already offered refunds/replacements for the problem caps and I explained the simple way that I got mine to fit. It doesn't bother me at all, but if you didn't want to do this a replacement would not be a problem (from what I gather, I'm not trying to make promises for you max, sorry if I'm incorrect)

Posted by: maxh2

Hi guys, sorry about taking so long to respond, I've been out and about.

I just finished making more and they're relisted here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...em=160027001926

The last batch may have been a bit big, although they fit just fine on my phone. I was trying to make them sit a little lower, since that seems like what most people want. For the ones I made today, I went back to the previous type of fit, so hopefully that will solve any problems with the caps pushing on too far and interfering with joystick operation.

I also made some just a tiny bit undersized especially for those of you that had the fit issues. I've only had two people contact me about exchanging their caps for a solid top one or a smaller one to fix the fit problem. If there's anybody else, don't hesitate to contact me. I don't want anyone to buy one of these and not have it fit right!

I haven't read all of the latest responses to this thread yet, but I really need to go to bed. I'll try to get to it tomorrow and post replies to any questions people had.

Max

Thanks. Just ordered one.

Just ordered one myself..

Posted by: Eldentistfuturo

Just got mine in the mail. Love it.

Posted by: goslice1

I had the same problem with the one I just got. I noticed that the up function was not working and it seemed as though the new button was interfering with the joystick. I pulled it off and put in on again with a little bit lighter touch. The instructions said to remove it after installing it to judge how well it was on and when I did that, the plastic that surrounds the joystick pulled up somewhat. Remembering that, i started pushing that plastic around the joystick back down firmly. It is working fine now and LOOKS GREAT!

I think maybe part of the cause of this has to do with telling people to take it right back off again. When I did that, like I said, the plastic around the joystick (especially on the right side) started to pull up. This plastic surrounding the joystick may not be seated back all the way and thus contributing to the interference.

Sometimes my Down Function doesnt work. O.o is it the joystick caps problem or how is it how i placed it?

pull it off n put it back on, this time not as far down. just let it naturally settle on. it will work fine.

In the menu it doesn't move for me when i press the stick diagonally. Not really a big deal though; the phone still kicks ***!

Just ordered one -- thanks for making more! I just got a k790a, and this joystick is really a pain...

You know if this will work on the T-Mobile SDA?

I'm right over in NM, I'll test fit it for you.

Posted by: feverfive

@ max: Thumbs up!! Just "installed" your joystick mod, and so far, so good...works great, and I think it improves the looks of the phone as well...

just ordered for my new k790a. great looking product!!

Buller? Anyone?

Posted by: maxh2

I highly doubt it will fit on the SDA, but I've been thinking about you guys, and I'm either going to try to get ahold of a broken/for parts SDA (cheap) or go by somewhere that sells them with my calipers and see if I can take some measurements, and whether or not it's feasible to design one for it. I saw that thread over in the T-mobile MDA/SDA forum, and I'll post any further developments over there.

Posted by: REDZMAN

Got ya. I've got a digital caliper and can take measurements for you I belive.

Just don't make me take it apart. LOL

Thanks for the answer my mang.

received mine today and I love it! looks great, and really improves the usability of that dumb joystick

Posted by: goslice1

I started having more trouble with the joystick mod on my K790a. The up function did not work consistently and sometimes up was select (center push). Seems like the cap sits too low on the joystick.

decided to remove it.

I like the function better without the cap.

I like the feel of the 'edge' of the joystick without the mod.

I can control it better.

Not sure if I got one of the ones that were a little bigger or what, but I've decided to go without it.

anyone know where i can get one of these cap for my just ordered k790a? non of the updated links are actually updated

i'd like to know how this new batch is

Posted by: hybrid.09

I would actually love to try this out. Heard a lot of great things, too bad he has no more, or isn't active on here anymore

Posted by: SirTrini

I love it... I got one of the newer ones... wouldn't go back to using the joystick without it.

I get the very occasional misread of the joystick movement with the cap - but its much better than the amounts of misreads you get without it.

Plus it just feels nicer on your thumb - like it has somesort of resting place.

I've had mine for about 2 weeks now and it's great!
I can't go back to using any SE phone with the little joystick, without scoffing at the owner for not getting one themselves.

Excellent Excellent!

Hi guys, I'm not dead, life has just left me with little time for making joystick caps or visiting the forums. I will make more soon, though, and I'll respond to everyone that has contacted me. Possibly next weekend, but no guarantees.

Posted by: prateeko

I'm interested in this for a K790a, I have a quick question to those of you with this. This just fits on top of the regular joystick (with a hole to let the original go through, as far as I can tell from the pictures), but how well does it stay on? Also, is it difficult to remove (and does it damage the phone at all)?

It fits very tight from what others in this thread have stated. You just pop it on over your stock joystick. No glue or anything.

Great to hear. I don't know if you got the PM, and maybe a few others here might be having the same problem but... The little orange rubber in the w800's joystick is wearing off, a very tinny amount but I see it's started. I believe you said that the k750 and w800 had different joysticks. But can you make one of the solid metal joysticks for the w800? I wanna stop the rubber from wearing off.
