Siemens S55 (T-Mobile) setup for GPRS WAP MMS HTTP & JAVA

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: justask

All this information can be found on various sites and boards. Putting it in one place just makes more sense. Hopefully it will help our technically challenged friends in setting up a new, unlocked Siemens S55 (or possibly any other phone).

Instructions are for T-Mobile customers in the USA. You must have a T-Zones account for Internet (GPRS) and you should have registered your account at "My T-Mobile". The settings focus on GPRS data movement which is much different than Internet via CSD (not included here). The steps are laid out in an interdependent order (enter carefully to avoid mistakes and don't skip around the order). If you already have some settings, clear them or create as new profile for each step. Some profiles (such as WAP and the Browser Profile) have required names that must be uniform for proper T-Mobile access.

To make this post as short as possible, menu shortcuts were used. Press the 'MENU' softkey once, then follow with the series of numbers indicated to get the proper menu for each setting.

1. Create a GPRS (WAP) Profile: (MENU-9-6-5)
> Data Services/MMS, Wap
-- Create a profile here, name it "GPRS"
-- GPRS settings: (should be checked)
---- APN = wap.voicestream.com
---- Login name & Password left blank

2. Create a secondary GPRS (Mail) Profile: (MENU-9-6-5)
> Data Services/Mail, Java, Rms
-- Create a profile here, name it "T-Mobile"
-- GPRS settings: (should be checked)
---- APN = wap.voicestream.com
---- Login name & Password left blank
---- DNS settings left blank

3. Create/Activate MMS Profile: (MENU-5-scroll to 'Msg. setup'-2)
-- Create a profile here, name it "T-Mobile"
-- Change 'MMS relaysrv.' settings:
---- Relaysrv.-URL = http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
-- Change 'IP settings':
---- IP Settings = 216.155.165.050
---- Port = 9201
---- Secondary IP left blank
-- Change 'Conn. profile':
---- Connection Profile = "GPRS"

4. Setup/Activate WAP browser: (MENU-3-1)
-- Scroll to 'Profiles'
-- Create a profile here, name it "T-Zones"
-- IP Address = 216.155.165.050
-- Port = 9201
-- Homepage = http://wap.myvoicestream.com
-- Connection Profile = "GPRS"

Assuming you've followed the correct order of steps, you should now have GPRS internet connectivity. To activate MMS service you need to create a new MMS message and send it to any email address. If it is able to send that MMS without error, then send another MMS message to your own wireless number (remember to use the international dial prefix for SMS and MMS messages - it's +1 for USA). You should get a notification on your phone of a new MMS message, but probably won't be able to successfully retreive it for a while. It can take up to 24 hours to activate your GPRS (MMS/SMS) bucket so just keep trying.

Now about that email client built into the phone...There is some conflicting information about whether or not it's supported on the T-Mobile network. I can tell you it is supported and does work, because I've been using it for some time on my Pocket PC. If you'd like to use it via GPRS, here's how to set it up (note: For corporate or MS Exchange users, you'll need a 'T-Zones Pro' - $9.99/mth account).

1. Login to the "My T-Mobile" website and click on 'Communication' then 'My Email Mobile Access' and configure the email account you'd like to use. Once configured, check to insure you can access it from within the T-Mobile website's internal webmail viewer. On the left under 'Configured Mailboxes' you'll see the account you created and some settings options. Click on 'Options' and set your time zone, then click 'POP Settings' and print the page.

2. On your S55 handset do this...
(BTW: These settings are dependent on the profiles you set up above - if you didn't get that right, then don't bother trying this.)

Create a GPRS Email Profile (MENU-5-scroll to 'Msg. setup'-3)
> E-mail/Setup
-- Under 'Accounts' create a profile, name it "T-Mobile Email"
-- Change 'User settings'
---- Provider "T-Mobile"
---- 'User Name' = The name you want people to see in the "From:" field of your email
---- 'E-mail addr.' = The email address of the account you setup on T-Mobile website
---- 'Reply-t. addr' = The email address you want people to use when replying to your email
---- 'User ID' = The User ID you obtained from the T-Mobile website (should be formed - 1234567890:user@pop.mailhost.com)
---- 'Password' = The password you normally use to access the mailbox you are setting up
-- Under 'Mail settings' set the options you want for downloading mail, etc.
---- 'Types' = The type of email account you use (use POP3 in this example)
---- 'POP3 server' = The information you obtained from the T-Mobile website
---- 'SMTP server' = The information you obtained from the T-Mobile website

Note: SMTP Authentication must be activated on your phone for outbound mail to work. This is regardless of whether it's required by your email account provider or not. Set it to authenticate using the password normally required to access the mailbox you are setting up (unless your email provider requires a different SMTP authentication password).

You now have access to your email using the phone's internal email client. To test, send yourself a test email from the phone (MENU-5-3). Wait a few minutes for the email to filter into the T-Mobile system, then send/receive from your phone (MENU-5-4-4).

If you want JAVA to work properly, you need to set the HTTP Profile...

Change the JAVA HTTP Profile (MENU-9-6-6)
-- Provider = "T-Mobile"
-- Linger time = 300
-- Proxy deactive = YES
-- All other settings left blank

Your now free to install and run JAVA midlets. Test it by installing one of the free JAVA files from the Siemens CD or website into the Java/JAM filesystem of your phone. Press the softkey under 'Install' when prompted on the screen. It should connect to the GPRS server and collect the information needed to run your JAVA file.

Hope that helps you setup your phone properly...
AK

stevest, I am in SF and these settings are working for me. Hate to state the obvious, but check for typos... one wrong character and no connect... other than that, maybe tell us what error you are getting?

Posted by: stevest

i got wap to work , but i cant get the phone to work as a modem , for my palm/mac/ or to send and recieve emails, does that also work under your settings? thank you, steve

Posted by: mantis5

steve, I haven't tried using the phone as a modem but I do have email working. You need an external POP3 email account configured on the T-Mobile website, and you need to make sure you have authentication on. Do you have all that set up? Sorry if I am asking the obvious but it's all I can think of.

I am sure you will get it working soon, good luck!

Used wonderful instructions for s55 setup on t-mobile. Unfortunately can send but not receive SMS. Please help

Posted by: justask

Are your asking about SMS or MMS? The two are very different. The SMS settings are usually pre-programmed onto your SIM card and route outbound messages to the T-Mobile SMS relay center. Receiving SMS messages is also pre-programmed to the card, as the message is routed directly using your mobile number. You shouldn't have to do anything to send/receive SMS messages with an activated SIM card. If your SIM card isn't recent...the gateway (service center number) may have been changed since you activated the SIM card. In this case, you should visit a T-Mobile store or call customer service to ask for a newer SIM.

On the S55 you can check the SMS gateway number by: (MENU-5-scroll to 'Msg. setup'-1-"Change Settings"). Last I remember for T-MO it should be: +12063130004 (the +1 is very important as it allows international access to your SMS service center). But if the problem is receiving...it's something related to your T-Mobile account or the SIM card. You may not have a plan with SMS service activated.

If you meant to say you can't receive MMS messages, then that's another beast. Send me a private message if that's the case and maybe I can help you work it out.

Thanks for your help. I am overcome with chagrin. After I posted the message, I went to the T-mobile web site and sent myself an SMS. Received it without difficulty. Then realized that I have to precede the dialed number with "1" since I was messaging from a Verizon phone

You have to set up two data accounts on the phone:
a). one that you use for t-zones and, in this case, you use wap.myvoicestream.com;
b). one that you use for your laptop to go on the internet and this would be internet2.voicestream.com.

I need help with the email feature!

I configured the email account, but I can't open my inbox without using the tzones browswer ... can someone provide the settings for the inbox/email on the S55? Sorry if this has been posted already, but I can't get it to work

Posted by: johnhirsch

As everyone has said, thanks for all of the settings!

Has anyone been able to get the S55 to work as a modem for your laptop/pocketpc?

I am using internet2.voicestream.com APN and dailing *99#

Is this the correct number to be dialing to connect over gprs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by: Synncere

When I was in Seattle a couple years back when it was Voicestream not Tmobile yet they had the same nbr *99# so I am sure that's it. I even dialed that when using my Merlin Card.

Posted by: nickp

I just received my Nokia 3650 and was wondering if anyone has ever set up the GPRS, Messaging and e-mail with T-Mobile on this phone ???

Thanks

Posted by: Synncere

if you check in the nokia forum or Tmobile forum I'm sure all the settings are there. With most forums it's a common question... most provider settings are scattered throughout the forums.

Posted by: nickp

Thanks Synncere.......have a good one.

n/p..... u too hope you found what cha need

I haven't been able to figure out how to get the GPRS modem to work except by using the connection software on the CD. When I run the Siemens program it will connect right up. This doesn't help me on non-PC devices, like my iPaq, however.

I can't seem to get any of the common *99# combinations to work.

Posted by: johnhirsch

The number to dial is *99***#1. I had a very difficult time making it work.

Today I downloaded GPRS Manager from Handango (14.95) and it works like a charm. Everything totally automated and very easy.

I don't have my S55 yet but will very shortly and will want to set up for Wap. Can you tell us the settings for Rogers AT&T.

In regards to MMS, as far as I knew Rogers doesn't support MMS yet.

Thanks

johnhirsch,

could you post your GPRS manager settings? Did you use the default "Hayes Compatible on Com1" it gave you with autodetect?

I have GPRS manager as well and cannot get it to work.

Also, what are your GPRS profile settings on the phone?

thanks for your help, I'm really frustrated.

Posted by: johnhirsch

I am using Bluetooth to connect the phone and pocket pc. In order to do that you have to first pair the phone using bluetooth and assign it a com port on your Pocket pc (it's com6 on mine). If you are using IR instead of bluetooth, I think you would have to use the "Generic IrDa modem" to connect.

I used "Siemens" as the cell phone manufacturer.
"Unlisted telephone" as the model.
"Voicestream" as the network on the next page.

That should enable a connection. Next, make sure that your pocket outlook is set using the "BVRP" connection in your advanced options.

PM me if you still have problems.
