8390 faceplates on a 6590i

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Here is my 6590i wearing a set of OEM 8390 faceplates. Had to trim off two tabs in the top of the front faceplate, but it fits and works great. I currently have an aftermarket Crystal keypad in there, but my OEM keypad should be here anyday.

I've got another set of faceplates on the way. When I get them I will post some 'before and after' shots so you can see exactly what has been trimmed off.

I got the OEM faceplate in the picture from a local Cingular store for the 'friend' price of $15. I have a 'Pure White' OEM faceplate and the OEM keypad on the way from eBay seller 'lovemoments'.

how is the fit? is it tight fitting like the oem ones are or crappy like aftermarket ones?

Posted by: Confused69u

Fit quality:
After the 8390 OEM faceplate is modded it fits onto the 6590 as an OEM faceplate is supposed too. That is to say that it fits snug and proper and all of the buttons work. If I handed you this phone you would just think it was an 8390. The 8390 rear cover needs no modification to work with the modded front cover. Do note, however, that the 8390 rear cover will not work with the 6590 front cover.

Using 8290 faceplates:
The 8390 and 6590 are very close relatives, making the faceplate exchange possible. The 8290 is from a different family of handsets, so I don't believe you will get the '8890' conversion faceplates to work on a 6590. It's physical dimensions as well as it's keyboard layout are completely different from the 8390/6590 phones. I know for a fact that actual 8290 plates are not going to fit as they are completely different in design. My wife uses an 8290 so I am familiar with it.

Pictures:
I am still going to post 'before and after' pics of the font faceplate mod as soon as my other faceplate arrives.

Funny you should ask, I just took a series of photos today to detail the modification. I need to scale them down so I can post them. I get 'em up as soon as I can.

Hey,

Check out this website of my phone: 8310 Cover on 6510
It's an 6510 with an 8310 faceplate.

The instructions are in Dutch, but I think the pics are good enough to understand how to mod the faceplate.

Good luck!

i just did the mod and the housing seems a bit loose. when you cut the tabs off the top of the 8390 housing, it is obviouslly going to be missing the "snap in" part of the housing so now on my 6590, the top comes on and off a little bit. also, the backplate has a little play so i can move it up and down a little. also the power button has major problems. i have to push it in A LOT for it to make it work.. am i missing something here?

N4L, that's probably the nicest looking 6510/90 i've ever seen. Great job.

Thanx.I made them on my own.Took 2 OEM covers and ripped them apart and build my own version.I think I sold about 12 covers of them at www.telefon-treff.de .
There are still people asking but I can't sell them anymore for the same price.

Watch out for more pics of several special editions of my Covers.7650,6310 & 6510.I will post them soon.

anyone else having problems trying to fit on a 8390 onto the 6590? The top part of the faceplate just won't "click" or go in smoothly.

The modification of my 6590 took a different route. The whole board from the 6590 was transferred to the body frame of an 8390. A dysfunctional 8390 was salvaged and the 6590 board screwed to the 8390 with no modifications necessary. So now any 8390 faceplates will fit with no mods necessary. The flip side of that is the 6590 housings no longer work.

uff....nice...!!!
but fyi, that cover is sold as a special edition set form Nokia as the all-black version for 8390...
it says black, but really the base is grey and the translucent part is dark blue like the stock ones...
