Generally speaking, has anyone had the experience of purchasing a phone from Korea and getting it to work on his or her Cingular service?
If so, could you share your experience? Good? Bad? Worth it?

Here's the short answer: Korea at least if we're talking about the same Korea (South) doesn't use a GSM network, they use CDMA so you're not going to be able to use their phones with Cingular.
More thorough answer: if you're thinking of purchasing an unlocked gsm phone from South Korea then you're in the same situation as purchasing any unlocked phone, make sure it has the 1900Mhz frequency and read the FAQ about using 1900 only phones. If you want to use a Korean phone, IN THEORY you can purchase a phone that works ONLY on SK Telecom and use it on Verizon because they both use the SAME 800Mhz. Note that I said IN THEORY, there are ways of making the phone work, but it will involve a lot of trouble on your part (time and money). In case you were talking about North Korea, who knows, they oddly enough decided to adopt the global standard and have a GSM network that I believe they shut off awhile back because of security reasons. Anyways if you are able to get a phone, highly unlikely, you will be back in the unlocked gsm situation I mentioned above. Hope this helps.

Sk and ktf have launched wcdma i believe go the 850 band so technically if you live in a cingular umts area that will eventually use 850 you at some point will be able too.
