v400 in call volume problems

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello,

I have had my v400 for a couple years now and all the sudden whenever I am connected in a call I can barely hear the person on the other line even though the volume is all the way up. If I put the speaker phone option on I can hear fine but as soon as I turn it off I can barely hear the person again.

I am not a phone guru. I have not modded this phone or anything - I wouldn't know where to start to do that. It is the same phone that I pulled straight from the box a couple years ago.

Is there a known problem with these phones and the internal speaker failing on them? Do I need to go out and get a new phone? It's really annoying to have to use speaker all the time just to hear the other person. Please help!

Thanks in advance for any input/help.

PS - I have cingular if it matters ....

Motorola (not cingular) has revised the speaker connection, they have made a change, they removed the elastomer and replaced it with a spring contact, please contact motorola to find the nearest service centre which is authorized to do this and has the required parts, this is no charge, motorola will pay for this.

Thank you for the input I will do that!

OK I just got off the phone with motorola and they said that there is no notice or announcement that there was ever a problem with the speaker connection and they said they have stopped making the phone so mu only option was to send the phone in to tehm for service but it would cost me $75 to do that ... no way its worth that

Are you from the USA? if so, that could be why, I dont think motorola USA is as up to date as Motorola Canada is. Moto Canada did not just tell me about it, they also supplied me with a part number for this revised part, and also sent me some to use.. I can take a picture of it if you want.

Yeah, I am from the USA. And based on the moto tech I talked to there isn't even a certified repair place near me to attempt to have someone look at it. I guess this may be my excuse to go out and get a RAZR.....

I have the same problem and contacted Moto and was told that because I am a Fido customer there is nothing that they will do for me. They don't fix Fido phones.
Fido will charge me $15 to look at the phone plus what ever costs for parts to fix the phone, I wonder what that is going to be?

Anyone know how many flex cables in the v400? I see on ebay the is one for the side buttons and one for the LCD but is there another for the earpiece? I'm just trying to figure out if it would be a whole lot cheaper to fix it myself, if the cable needed replacing, or if it would be just a few bucks to let someone else take the responsibility. Hopefully it is just dirty contacts but I kinda doubt it as the phone was just in 6 months ago (a week before the warranty expired) for the low earpiece volume problem and cleaning is probably the first thing they do.

lol... this was the EXACT same reason why I got my RAZR, was because of the speaker issue, I found it would start working again if you smack it on something, just bump it on something, not too hard, but enough to bump it a bit, sometimes it'll help, sometimes it makes it worse, thats what I did for a month lol

its bad advice, but it works lol

Nope - I'm going to see if any of the cingular stores can look at it in my area but basically Moto USA told me I was SOL b/c it was out of warrenty and they really didn't even acknowledge that there was an issue with the volume yet I think all the posts here prove there is.

Well thank you. I have so many things sync up to this phone that I don't want to go through the process of getting a new one right now.

I'll go on another thread and see what people are saying about the smarphones, waiting for the perfect one!

Good luck

Hi Paolo can you help me a little bit more. I know that it has been a few months but I had a spare phone to use so I wasn't in a hurry. I took the phone into the Burnaby store and they told me that weren't able to get the re-work kit as it is not on their order list and they can't order it unless it is on the list. They did offer to install the kit for free if I got the kit.

I had the same problem with my V400. As it turns out, the earpiece speaker is not soldered to the circuit board. Instead, the speaker contacts are held in contact with the circuit board by pressure. Over time, either the pressure eases or else the contacts get dirty. I took the outer cover off of the phone, blew some air around the speaker and cut a few small strips of a rubber band and placed them behind the speaker. When I reinstalled the outer cover, the cover itself squeezes the rubber bands and puts pressure on the speaker to keep it in solid contact with the circuit board. I did this about 2 months ago and I have not had a single problem since that time. Prior to this "repair", my phone had gotten to the point where the earpiece speaker almost never worked.

I hope this is useful to some of you....

Jeff
