w600 as a modem?

When i connect my w600 to my laptop, it says in the bottom right corner, MODEM DETECTED, and the bubble disappears after a few seconds. This leads me to believe that i can use my phone as a wireless modem for an EDGE connection on my laptop. Is this possible? If i add the unlimited data plan, will i be able to use my phone to connect to the internet anywhere that I get cell phone service?

If that's not possible, how are those PCMCIA cards that connect to EDGE on the laptops? Are Cingular's data services pricey? I'm interested in getting internet on my laptop so i can use it in the car and stuff.

Yes you can use it as a modem for your laptop. This is called tethering. As for Cingular data prices....well, you don't want to know unless you are really wealthy. Just check their website. But make sure you take a tranquilizer before you see their prices. Don't say I didn't warn you.
