Buying a New Phone...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Even though I am not eligible for an upgrade through Cingular, can I buy a phone off of eBay, throw my SIM in and be good to go? Do I have to let Cingular know of any thing? Hypothetically speaking, could someone purchase a new phone off eBay for example darn near every month and Cingular not care?

Uh huh... and apparently, some HoFo members do...

yep thats the joy of using gsm, you can just pop your sim card in the phone and cingular wont care, but make sure if you buy a phone from ebay or here that it either unlocked or a cingular phone. also that it has 850/1900 bands on them, depending where you live you might be able to get away with 1900 only

Yep, I just replaced my V551 that way. Got a z520a and couldn't be happier.

As far as Cingular knows we're still using the 6340i's we got when we signed up 2yrs ago.

This morning, a customer service rep on the phone told me I was still using a V60.

I have a 6682 and they still think I was using a RAZR. When I was on a different contract I had a z500a and they thought I was using a siemens c61. I love GSM!

I'll illustrate this with my own personal phone usage during my 18 months with Cingular on my two lines.
I've had a Moto v551, AT&T branded SE T616, RAZR, Samsung c207, Moto v180, Samsung x497, Moto RAZR, Nokia 6030, Moto blue RAZR, Sharp TM 150, SE w600i. I love bouncing from phone to phone. Cingular has only had the Moto v551, the silver RAZR and the w600 on my account. Cingular thinks my husband has a Nokia 6030 on his account, but he's using an unlocked cosmic blue RAZR.

My Blackberry 8700c should arrive today. Woot! But, Cingular will know about that just because I'll be adding the BB data plan and I have to call them to do that. Joy.

Gotta Love It! I am looking for a phone on ebay, preferably a camera. Not a razr, 6682, w600i, v551 or v557, l6, or slvr. How can I work around THAT?!

pebl, w810, w300

there are three that come to mind.

this thread makes me want to write songs about how good GSM is...

Too expensive, too expensive, too expensive.

Called the XBM palace. [lol] I carefully explained my situation of 2 w600i's, 6 razrs, and 1 nokia 6682, and they FINALLY after 2 MONTHS of trying, agreed to send me out a SLVR! WOOOT! [clapping]!!

The only catch is...

they don't have them in stock and the dude on the phone predicted about 1 week. Does anyone know when they are going to become in stock at the XBM place in the Central Illinois area?

Then stop crying about these phones.

If you have a mid range budget, then you are going to get mid range phones.

I'm currently cell phone-less. The RAZR v3i looks particularly attractive featureset-wise. But it looks like the unlocked versions are actually going to be cheaper than what Cingular is going to charge. Given what was said above, does this mean that I could sign up for service using a significantly cheaper phone, buy an unlocked v3i, swap the SIM and still be good to go?

Thanks.

You better believe it. Just get the cheap phone for now, buy an unlocked V3i, and either sell the cheap phone on eBay, or keep it around as a backup in case something goes wrong with your V3i (I always like to have a backup plan).

Since I usually have only 1 main phone at a time (I have a Unlocked Nokia 6010 from T-Mobile prepaid as cheap back up) I usually tell Cingular about the new phone and they put the IMEI in their system.
