i was looking into gettin a new phone in the near future but that plan stopped when i heard that cingular canceled their launch of the 6282....does anyone know of other phones perferably nokia?

Actually, this has been a bone of contention for me. Cingular (and AT&T before) used to be on the cutting edge with new phones and technology whereas Verizon always had old, ridiculous phones. Now, the poles have reversed. Verizon gets the new, best phones and Cingular has been sitting on their hands for over a year. I used to get a new phone every 6 months, and now I've been stuck with my RAZR for 18 months. Can you imagine my disgust?!! Seriously, though... something needs to change.

how do you figure? 9300, L7, RIM 8700 and 7130c, UMTS cards - all exclusives to the best of my knowledge

You should have added to your comment with "they don't have the phones I want"

Posted by: Rcadden

Haha, not to mention 6682, both UMTS phones, both PTT phones, the HP phone.......

That's true, except T-Mobile has the 8700. The 9300 is over a year old and it was just recently released. They really need to work on their phone selection though. It's hard to argue with the fact that Cingular phones aren't very advanced compared to phones carried by European carriers, or even Verizon at this point. I just can't understand how carriers like Vodafone can get a phone like the Nokia N80 two weeks after unlocked versions are shipping, but IF Cingular was to get it, it would probably take another 6 months at least.

I Have A Phone, I realize you work for Cingular, so I assume you have some insight on this issue. Please explain why it takes Cingular forever to get phones?

well i live in the detroit area and i was gonna wait for the cingular to put up their 3g network cuz i heard that it enhances voice quality and coverage....butttt im gonna get the nokia 6682 because i hear its the best phone cingular has out that has both features and voice qauilty..

what do you guys think i should do wait for the 3g network or just get the 6682 ..... ill be mad if i get it and dont get the same coverage as 3g phones do cuz theres alot of dead spots in my area..

Attempting to thoroughly testing mobiles before releasing them (or deciding not to release them at all).

Why does Cingular test them more thoroughly? Does Vodafone not test its phones but for a week?

I agree that Cingular is lacking a bit in the phone department, has been kinda stale for the past 24 months or so, with a few exceptions. Not to mention the failed promotion of the ROKR.

The 3 that call out to me are the 8125, 6682, and 2125. The 8700 was a big innovation regarding BB devices but I am not a fan of them.

Data wise they are so far behind the curve of 3G that I wont even begin to get into it.

Either way I really can't see Cingular going anywhere but up mainly due to the fact they can't get much farther down.

1. Cingular offered the 8700 first on an exclusive
2. 9300 is still an exclusive for them
3. Carriers like Voda are not supporting GSM 850, let alone UMTS 850. That makes things a heck of a lot easier for them.
4. Fact is the vendors all see NA as a second/third market. They serve Europe or Asia first, then work to make their designs "fit" the specs for NA operators
5. I've never said I work for any operator

again, I don't understand statements like this. They have the products in stores. How can you be behind the curve with product out there?

For almost 12 months now I could get EVDO from either Verizon or Sprint, now it looks like Cellular South is about to roll out EVDO as well while Cingular's UMTS roadmap to 2008 so far doesn't even cover South Mississippi.

Having products in stores and having the network available to use the product on are 2 different things.

I guess I'm still missing the point?? What's the VZW 3G footprint in NA? What is it outside NA?

What am I missing here?

Some people will make ignorant statements about things they have no idea about.

In the past two years Cingular has done a lot in technology and innovation. As former AT&T looking back at the last two years it has been amazing how much this company has achieved in its goals. We have the majority of tower integration on, all GSM accounts on one billing system, HSDPA 1900 launch (850 coming soon in '08 after TDMA good bye), transitioning blue to orange, TDMA migrations to GSM, Kodiak PTT launch, GoPhone features, and soon we'll be revamping our media plans to be even more competitive... very soon in fact.

If there is one thing Cingular has is technology and innovation.

I'll probably get hacked (to pieces) for this comment, but isn't this one reason why we chose to use Cingular, GSM and the ability to use any phone we like (to some degree) granted you have to pay more for an unlocked phone though.

To steven0410: I happen to live in a deadzone, between two towers, and I get pretty crummy service with both T-Mobile and Cingular GSM when I can get service. I tried UMTS just for kicks to see whether my service would improve and it did significantly, I get 3 out of 4 bars, so I decided to switch to UMTS. You can take this comment any way you like, but the Cingular Reps at my local store mentioned that most of their customers noticed improved service when using the UMTS service. I'd say try the service to see how it works for YOU, if you can wait.

The stickies at the top of the two Cingular phone forums are a good place to look.

What's Cingular's?

Get your head out of your *** and perhaps then you will get the point, that Cingular has fallen behind in the 3G race.

Sorry, I assumed since you knew so much about Cingular that you worked for them. I didn't know you could magically obtain information about things only Cingular employees would know whenever you wanted to. Unless, you have a friends who works for them. Sorry for my logic.

after you remove your head from your rectum you might want to explain this "race"?

All I see in this thread are wannabe experts nitpicking an operator - DAYUM! now there's a surprise for this forum

you learn something new every day chief

If Cingular was sitting there doing nothing for the past two years they would still be selling TDMA phones and some GSM phones like the Nokia 6340i and Motorola V60g and have a semi-national network with 1900-only markets in NYC and CA. But then again, I don't know everything and just maybe, according to some posters here, in some markets Cingular may be still selling phones like the Nokia 6590i.

By the way, some of you will be spending a few days with your head stuck in the banning chamber.
