is there anybody out there that can help me get a developers key so i can download 3rd party applications and send ringtones to my sidekick 2, i tried t get one from danger but i cant figure out how to create a sample application so i could get approved for a key

Posted by: xLoveDeath

Nope. Dev keys aren't handed out, and if they are its only to people who can make the applications.

I can help. Here's what you need to do:

Learn java
Write a simple app
Send it to danger with your application to be a developer
Sit back & pray for approval

That's all the help we can give you. Dev keys are bound to your IMEI, so someone else's key won't work for your phone, and there's no way to just trick danger into handing you one.

if there is anyone that can further help me get a key my e-mail address is manny1551@yahoo.com, i tried with the java and it is hard

Posted by: Kabuk1

Dude, NOBODY can "help" you get a dev key, it just does NOT work like that. If java is too hard then do yourself a favor & forget about getting a dev key. The dev community doesn't need any more gimme gamers who only want keys to upload ringtones.

AMEN

man what you talken bout dev community dont need any more gimme gamers who only want keys to upload ringtones. why not im not taken nothen from you are anybody else, i think its stupid that t-mobile lock the sidekick down and they tryna charge me 1.99 a ringtone dats crazy, im tryna find somebody that can make a program that i can send to danger so i could get a key and i will pay them i rather pay that peson than pay t-mobile, if anybody wants too my email address is manny1551@yahoo.com

Posted by: cerious22

basically what they are trying to say is that they dont want someone who doesnt know what they are doing just uploading games and ringtones to their phone. if you dont understand java and programming you should leave your sidekick as it is other wise you could mess it up. that is why danger wants a sample program sent to them first...that and the revenue they would bring in for it

You(manny) just outlined the reason dev-wannabes make us all so mad- "learning java is too hard. I don't care about contributing to the community, I just want free stuff". It's like cheating on a test & getting on the honor roll or something.

And it's really not smart to post your email address in forums like this. Spam bots will collect it & meanies will sign you up for pr0n just for giggles.

Good luck in your search for a sucker. Write back when you find someone willing to do your work for you.

Excellent advice, but one minor correction:

If you learn enough Java to be able to write a simple example application that runs on the device, you're virtually guaranteed approval for a key - there's no prayer needed.

It's a simple, fair, litmus test. If you can code for the device, then you're a developer, so you get a developer key. Period.

I guess we should thank seamonkey420 for opening up the floodgates for posts like manny's. Before the charger port on my SKII died, I would code simple games for it and sent them to other devs to help me on finetuning. I was working on an alternative browser before it died so I guess I can pick it back up when I get my new SKIII.

What do you expect from Manny. He only has 4 posts, he probablly just joined yesterday & now hes begging for a free handout. tsk tsk

Goodluck. But as everyone who looks on this forum said, you wont get a email telling you how to do it.

Wow, just wow. No, cheating you would be like them offering you free unlimited text messenging and then suddenly saying they're not free after you already sent hundreds of txt messages. Or better yet, them telling you that you can download all the ringtones you want from their site for free and then waiting for you to sign-up to tell you that it's actually not free.

That would be cheating you. You don't even know what the word cheating means. I suggest you look it up in a dictionary. Nevermind, let me do it for you:

1. To deceive by trickery; swindle
2. To deprive by trickery; defraud:
3. To mislead; fool.
4. To elude; escape

How is charging people for ringtones fit any of those definitions? Just because you can upload ringtones for free on some other phones doesn't make T-mobile guilty of trickery. If you would have asked them before signing up, they would have told you straight up that ringtones must be purchased for the Sidekick. It's not their fault you didn't realize that sooner.

I'm surprised you're also not complaining that they have the nerve to charge you for service. I mean, the air that the radio waves travel along belongs to everyone, right? What nerve T-mobile has. /sarcasm

Just wondering..

What's wrong with someone wanting a developer key just for adding ringtones to their phone? I don't see why that is frowned upon so much around here..

its not the fact that he wants a developers key...its the fact that he doesnt want to pay for ringtones and he feels he is being cheated by tmobile. when in fact he is trying to cheat the system by having someone make a program for him to send in so he can get a dev key. honestly if it is that important to you take a couple hours of the day and read up about java. start here:

http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/...31-java101.html

let us know when you get your dev key.

Posted by: Kabuk1

It's also the fact that he's trying to get other people who have actually made the effort to learn java to write a program FOR him so he doesn't have to bother with it. I didn't do other people's homework in school, I don't "cover" for lazy people at work, and I'm not about to do it now either.

Developer keys are for developers who want to actually produce content for the device - something that regular hiptop users regularly ***** about the lack thereof.

It's not Danger's fault that you can't load ringtones on a Sidekick. That is completely and totally T-Mobile's decision to do so.

Getting a developer key to load ringtones is bad for a few reasons:

1) It's a way to abuse Danger in order to "get around" T-Mobile's restrictions on ringtone loading.
2) which gives T-Mobile a reason to get ticked off at Danger for providing a way around their restriction
3) which gives Danger a reason to make it harder to get developer keys so that ticking off T-Mobile (see #2) is less lilely to happen
4) which makes it harder for legitimate developers who are starting out to develop for the platform to legitimately get keys
5) which makes it harder for developers to create content for the device
6) which makes less content available for the device
7) which makes the users complain that there's no content available for the device

So amazingly enough, by the logic of "cause and effect" it actually *IS* a bad thing to get developer keys just to load ringtones.

Abusing the system hurts everyone in the long run.

You've all made your point.

I'll just shut up now.
