Just ordered the treo 700p and have some questions

I ordered it online last night!!

Although $619 plus tax hurts a bit....

One thing though, when did treo 650 come out? The price of it only has dropped $100 so I figure wait longer for a better price of 700p is kinda pointless.

What options are there for the date package?

I see you can select $5 mobile web with a treo. Does that mean you can browse the web with the built in web browser on treo against your airtime?

I've never owned a smartphone before, well, except Nokia 3620 a S60 phone. So I'm excited about being a first time treo user!

I'm also looking at Motorola Q. What are some advantages and disadvantages of both device. I'm new to smartphone so don't have on hand experience with WM 5.0 and Palm OS.

Thank you

Welcome to the world of Palm! As the "resident 650 genius", as someone once called me, I'm happy to welcome new treo owners to the board.

I think you'll be happy w/the treo. I have used both windows mobile & palm, and the only thing I hate more than WM5 is animal abuse, if that tells you anything. It's slow, bloated, buggy, and locks up comstantly. In other words, it's just like regular windows. Palm is more streamlined, much faster & more stable. Plus there are infinitely more apps for Palm that WM & you can do over the air program installs from any site that lets you download PRCs(palm program files).

I got my 650 in late january of '05, about a week or two after the local Sprint store got it & I paid $450 with a 2 year plan. Don't look for the 700's price to drop very much anytime soon. 650 prices only started to come down recently, and they're still pretty steep unless you get a plan.

Data depends on what carrier you have. Sprint has unlimited vision for $15, $10 without mms I believe.

The OP ordered their Treo from Verizon, who uses CDMA. The concept of "unlocking" is nonexistant in CDMA, as CDMA providers only activate devices that are in their electronic serial number pool...

The GSM version of the 700P hasn't been announced yet...

I learn something new everyday! Ok so i'll look out for GSM version whenever that gets announced. Thanks again!

How did you get the $10 one? I thought the $15 one is only for date, tv and radio.

i'm ordering my 700p tonight through the v710 exchange website so i'll be getting like $350 back for my v710 towards my 700p purchase.

I already have an xv6700 which I still think to be the best pda phone out as it has wifi something the treos dont.

but I did like the calendar and task apps better on my treo 650 so looking forward to that on the palm os of the 700p again and seeing how blazer is on evdo. blazer was way too slow on treo 650 but supposedly is great with evdo on the 700p and maybe kind of better then pie?

the screen is still a square 320x320 while the 6700 has the wide screen i like better but whatever the 700p is good compliment to the 700p if you have both and to me the 2nd best.

Moto Q is not even in the running as its a smartphone not a pda phone so no touch screen, nothing and even smaller screen.

Oh no, I have the $15 plan cause it includes mms. I have no idea what plans sprint offers, actually, I haven't been on their site in forever.

If you go with verizon, be prepared to pay a lot more for data.

But I heard that WM5 froze, lock up stories.....and the call quality, RF on 6700 is not very good. I guess from what I heard, 6700 doesn't have good phone function. I actually do love the keyboard more on 6700 but if I get a PDA phone.....vioce quality, RF is still pretty important.

yeah i love the 6700 and its been fine for phone but i can see what you mean with teh one handedness etc. cus i had a treo 650 and was much easier to text while driving, heh.

i use the 6700 mostly for data with only a small amount of free incalling as i have another phone/carrier for bulk of my voice so it works out great but i can see how if its your one and only phone how it might not be ideal but if you could have only one i'd still want something that has it all and in black and with the clip i have it still looks pretty cool.

VZW data pricing is pretty expensive. Actually Cingular too....

For 3G, nobody could touch Sprint.

Decision: Whether to join my family in the family plan and pay $10 for voice and $40 for unlimited data.

OR

Join Sprint, my first wireless carrier. Spend $30 on voice and $15 for unlimited data.

How's 3G coverage compare between VZW and Sprint?

VZW does give me In call with most of the family though....

how do you get data for 40/mo? i thought its 44.99/mo

my wifes family plan isn't enough to allow the 2nd line that I use to be 9.99 so i have to pay 19.99/mo for it plus the 44.99/mo for unlimited data and then i pay 3.99 for text i think.

her plan really isn't supposed to even be a family plan as its less then teh lowest one but she doesn't need all the minutes in even the lowest family plan and its more money so shes grandfathered in and i just suffer for the 19.99/mo for the line instead of 9.99

so I'm at about 70/mo plus taxes etc.

maybe i should switch to sprint for 45/mo total (assuming the $30 is the lowest voice plan) as i know you are forced to get a voice plan and can't just have data alone.

of course as your dilemna i would lose the free in calling which is all i use the voice on vzw for and wouldn't use the 30/mo voice plan on sprint at all really as I have my own gsm carrier with 2 lines for voice.

as far as free in with the wife though i could just give her a gsm phone for the free in calling there.

now that i think about it i dont know why i'm with vzw then. at the time it was for the more widespread evdo and i liked the black xv6700 over sprints silver but.. again its not making much sense paying more now that i think about it just for in calling.

i would have free in calling on the gsm phones with wife and screw whatever other fam and freinds on vzw.

if i was going to leave vzw though i should have chose the option in the v710 class action to cancel vzw with no etf. too late now and i would have to pay etf to get out.

regardless, as soon as gsm (cingular) has their highspeed data by way of umts/hsdpa I wont need any cdma carrier and will use gsm for voice and data and be able to switch to whatever phone i want to use by popping in the sim card.

You heard right, it's terrible. The phone is very poorly implemented on the 6700. I couldn't get a signal half the time in my house, and that's the only phone that's ever done that to me.

MY bad, unlimited data on VZW is $45. Damn!!!

Except for Cricket :-) .. They'll gladly activate any CDMA device so long as you have the MSL code and know how to program it :-D Sometimes, if you're lucky, the tech at the Cricket store will know how to program it.. then you just have to provide the programming code (MSL).
