AKU2 ROM & Phantom Syncs

I recently loaded the iMate ROM on my 2125 over the weekend and while the direct push is working amazing well, i do notice a few phantom syncs every 30, 35, 40ish minutes where ActiveSync will run through the process of doing a sync, but nothing will arrive.

Can anyone confirm that this occuring with their direct push and is this the device reestablishing the heartbeat with the server?

Mine does this on my 8125. I am not sure why but it doesn't bother me much.

Probably just reaffirming the connection to the server to check the pulse rate.

yea, its a quick transfer, never gives you status like "looking for changes" or the like.

After a full day of monitoring the traffic with GPRS monitor at 11:38pm i'm at 2mb send - 2mb received for the whole day - thats including all my mail for two accounts and various other connections.

I have an unlimited plan -- just was looking to see if someone knows what is actually happening when this phantom transfer occurs.....

I just recently discovered, perhaps I am slow, that I can go into ActiveSync and have my phone sync contacts, etc., with my Exchange Server at work. For the past week I have been pretty jazzed how my 2125 would do that but my BlackBerry would not ... but still did not have anything remotely "push."

But tonight, I discover that one of the settings within that area in ActiveSync is it can sync as new items arrive, and is triggered by a SMS message sent to the phone. I tested it, it worked perfectly.

My question is, is this as "push" as it is going to get? This suits me, but am I not burning one of my 1,000 SMS each time I get an e-mail?

No that is not as "push" as it's going to get, once you install a ROM with the AKU2 update you will no longer need the SMS notification it will keep an "open HTTP" connection with the server it has been described as a heartbeat with it. I suggest you look at some of the other ROM's to allow this over at www.xda-develoers.com life gets a lot better with push trust me on that, this is coming from a former BB user.

Just to be honest, I am 'a skeert' of installing a ROM that does not come to me from Cingular/HTC. Someone talk to me, reassure me, convince me.

The ROM's are step by step they are literally a walk thru, HOWEVER they do void your manufacter warranty so it has ups and downs.

The CIngular ROM is due from them by the end of June as they promised when i bought the phone. I was getting impatient, not to mention running up hundreds of SMS messages using the half-baked version of direct-push mail that is on the 2125.

The iMate ROM was provided by a european carrier and works perfectly, just as the Cingular ROM will do. In fact the CIngular ROM may be an even later update for the phone.

If you are unsure about installing an unofficial ROM, I'd recommend against it.
It will hopefully be another month at most.... we hope.
