I'm planning a hybrid white and black 810 ... just waiting on the white housing from
cnn.cn :-)

Hi, I am new here, and I consider buying SE w810i. I have seen here that you have many experiences with customizing W810i so I have few questions.

-Is there on backplate on W810i some lens mounted on the backplate where camera fit, or there is only hole and the lens mounted on the camere just fit there.
Me goes for that, that if there is some other lens mounted on the backplate, the possible scratches did not affect the camera and can be solved with new backplate.

-If I do the customization and mount the K750 backplate on the W810, did I loose the warranty? Is there some plomb/paper or other thing that is used to determine if the phone was dissasmbled?

-Is possible to clean somehow the lens of camera(withou dissasembling)
or it is completly unrecommended? I have read some articles where people has removed some blue/violet (maybe antireflection layer) layer on te lens by cleaning it with cotton ball
Is there that layer?

Thanks very much for answers, and|I apologize if something was writtten ununderstandable, I am not native english speaker

@y2bandit - my only concern is that the different shades of white (white front, gray middle, silver back) would look awkward....does it?

@ferryman - there is a plate that covers the lens
- there is nothing to determine that the phone has been disassembled
- are you talking about cleaning the plate or the actual lens itself...???

Maybe but only way to find out is to try right!?

Posted by: starman_dx

hahaha good point...but damn... the white housing from cnn.cn is rediculously overpriced... so i might just go with the black on black mod first...

Posted by: sst_

can some one tell me the exact size for the philips screw driver, i hav a #0, will that work?

Posted by: phattbam

it's pretty small. if you use the jewelers size ones you should be ok.

Posted by: sst_

oo ok, but i dont know wut the jewelers size is and i dont hav one, i only hav a #0 lol, i duno ill buy a set and try em out, but it would be easier if someone would tell me the size lol

Are the K750i housings at cnn.cn OEM? Cuz it doesn't say if it's OEM on any of the K750i products, but the W810i products are all OEM cuz it says they are.

I'm just a little confused as to whether or not it's OEM

If anyone could clarify that, I'd really appreciate it, and will get the back housing ASAP

Cheers guys!

Just modded my W810i with the w750i back cover. As posted before, it was pretty easy and took like 15min. My back cover came with the speaker mesh, so I didn't need to do any modifying other than cutting the little tab off. I ordered from CNN.CN and it took 3 weeks for my cover to get here to Edmonton, Canada. The only downside of the mod is that the silver lense cover feels a bit flimsy. The actual lense cover is plastic but with a thin metal plate glued onto it wihch makes it look like it's a silver metal cover. I guess you can't ask for too much for $12. Maybe I'm just being too @nnal. I'm happy that my phone has a lense cover now, but the phone definitly doesn't feel as solid as before. Might have to find a better cover if there's one that fits.

Its been answered before. Its high quality aftermarket. Its either on par with OEM or better.

Thank you, but I have one more question:

I dont understand if the lens cover(->there is a plate that covers the lens ),
is part of the backplate or the camera.
So once more pls, Is there some glass/plate/lens mounted on the backplate, where the camera fit so the possibly scratches can be solved with the new backplate.

To the cleaning: I am talking about cleaning without dissasembling the phone, so cleaning the first material/glass/lens on the backplate that can be touched/accessed simply by using cotton stick, is there some layer(antireflexive) that may be damaged?

thank you very much

Posted by: starman_dx

the plate that protects the lense is not part of the back plate, its part of the middle of the phone and yes possible scratches may be solved with a new plate however i have not seen any being sold.

you can clean that plate without disassembling the phone and there isn't a layer or anything that can be damaged

It's pretty much the same as the W810i.
It's not difficult. If you've ever added ram to a laptop you've done half the job. The toughest part for me was just getting the front plate off without forcing anything.
The whole job took me at least a couple of hours I think, but I was very gentle and meticulous.
Oh, and the guide doesn't mention how to get the mem stick cover off. It has a sort of arrowhead that sticks through a slot in the middleplate. Compress it from one side with a flat screwdriver and you can pull it out.
Since you'll be using the back and middle from the K750i, you won't have to mod the middleplate to make it fit the back, however the front plate matches the 750 middle only 99%. You will have to make a little notch in the middle plate at the top near the power button to accomodate a tiny flange on the 810 front. It's no problem. In fact, I couldn't find my exacto, so I did it with a steak knife and it was still dead simple, and as long as you dont let the knife mar the ******d facing edge you can butcher the inside edge and noone will ever see it.
One potential drawback of the 750 middleplate is that it doesn't have the walkman logo on it. Someone on this board has a hybrid with a silver middleplate that does have the logo, but I'm not sure which phone it came from.

i cant seem to get the bottom two screws off. the phillips head screws came off pretty easy, but there two look almost like hexagon screws. i used a small 1/16 size but it was too big and none of the other sizes work. how did u guys get those 2 screws off??

Posted by: glorfingal

@starman - not quite, the lens protector is part of the camera sub assembly
and is not attached to the middle (chassis) of the phone - I'm guessing
that a replacement camera will have the protector already on it.

@tha_dream - torx (T6 to be exact )

aww i ordered mine from cnn too, but i live in British Columbia, does that mean mine is gona take 3 weeks too, i was happy cuzz its been 7 days since i ordered and i thought it would come in the next 3 days, how long did it take your backplates to come (ppl near BC)

Posted by: gbadude

what does the speaker mesh do? by the way how can you tell if you even have the speaker mesh?

Posted by: glorfingal

mesh is for dust ingress prevention :-)

Posted by: sst_

i just got my k750 back plate, took 5 mins to put it on, now it feels even more sturdier than before, it doesnt make as much crakling noises when u push down on it, i'm very happy with it

Posted by: gbadude

Alright I did the mod too, but I didn't cut anything. I just attached the k750i backplate on. There is a slight bulge on the left side, but it's hardly noticeable. Anyways the mod really is easy, it's just kind of scary to take the faceplate off, but you gotta use force.

Posted by: starman_dx

still waiting for my order..ZZzzzz

Posted by: glorfingal

@gbadude - the bulge is because you left the retaining clip on the
750 back plate - trim it off and you'll have a nice snug fit. It only
needs a sharp knifeand about 2 mins to trim the back - nothing off
the phone body :-)

@starman - my white housing arrived today (that's 7 days HK to UK) so
hold on :-)

Posted by: vibe69

are the speakers now any quiter?? because those 3 holes are gone?

Posted by: glorfingal

@vibe69 - been stated before - the 750 back cover doesn't change the
sound level - it has a grill instead of 3 holes.

I did the mod also, bought the cover from cnn.cn - the silver sliding plate is plastic (which I was dissapointed with) - was hoping for something sturdier. All in all its great because its saving my lens but if I can find an OEM cover somewhere it would be great! Does anyone know if the OEM 750 cover has a metal sliding cover or is it also plastic?

Posted by: glorfingal

the one I got from cnn.cn has the metal slide and was marketed as OEM.

Posted by: deeps7

what? So that means they're selling two versions???

So there's no way i can have the w810i battery cover on the k750i backplate?
Damn that sucks

Posted by: y2bandit

Just received mine. The sliding cover is plastic

Posted by: MrDisco1

ok i ordered the full faceplate kit and 5 days later it arrived. my sliding door is plastic so if someone got a metal cover then something is odd is going on.
my speaker grills did not come with any mesh
I also did not receive the small plastic piece that covers the LED flash light. i popped the one off of the w810i but it doesnt seem to fit properly. so now i'm screwed

Posted by: UCLAKoolman

the one I bought from cnn.cn over a month ago has the metal sliding door. It was also a couple bucks more expensive than the one they are offering now on the website.

Posted by: tha_dream

i just did the housing swap with the k750 middle and backplates...now i cant get the camera or the light to work...anyone had this happen to them?? i took out everything and re-assembeled the phone again, but still the same thing is happening...i press the camera button and then it goes to the camera for a split second, then back to the main screen...and the light, well it just doesnt turn on at all...is there any way to fix this? or am i screwed for trying to make my phone a little better on the eyes???

Posted by: MrDisco1

ok i'm thinking this mod doesn't work anymore (or i'm just an idiot). even ignoring the missing flash light piece, although i can get the cover to snap on three things stick out:
-the slider does not close. its as though the spring mechanism is hitting against something (the door only slides barely 1/2 way over the lens
-the lens does not sit center to the opening. its askew by a few millimeters
-the battery cover is not flush with the body piece; there's a gap of 1-2 mm (which makes sense given the above)

it as though the body piece is ever so slightly too short

Posted by: dirtysouth

omg does this mod not work anymore? i just bought a w810 and just bought the 2 back covers from cnn.cn a few days ago...

Posted by: gbadude

I just did this mod less than a week ago and it worked fine. It took like at most 10 minutes, half of it was getting the guts to take the original back plate off. MrDisco, I don't know how to help you there, I didn't remove the middle housing, only the back plate. Dirtysouth, the mod should work fine, at least the back faceplate. I can't vouch for any other modifications though.

Posted by: MrDisco1

well i looked at it again this morning. the 750 backplate snaps in, the piece appears flush with the body, however as i said the camera lens is offcenter from the opening and the battery cover does not snap into the body piece. so either the kit i received was a cheaper oem knockoff that was off in size or i'm doing something completely wrong (yes i did shave the tab off as mentioned in the word doc posted earlier in the thread).
dirtysouth i'ld be interested to know how your mod turns out.

Posted by: glorfingal

@tha_dream - yours sounds like the flex cable from the light to the camera to the pcb
isn't connected correctly. Check both the connectors are aligned right and snug.

@mrdisco1 - that sounds like a "not so good" quality version I'm afraid, so may not line
up at all.

Posted by: MrDisco1

well ... that just sucks it really does look fantastic with the 750 back. also for anyone is having trouble popping the back off i found its much easier if you remove the battery and using a small screwdriver pressing from the inside out against the edge (just above where the screw you remove). this will pop the plate off of the lower tab giving you an easier time of popping the rest off.

so anyone have any other leads on where to get 750 backplates that might work?

Posted by: enklined

Add me to the list of w810i with k750i backplate!

However, my backplate didnt some with the "mesh."

What do i do?

Posted by: Rundell

Just found an auction that says they have a housing with the metal slider.

Anyone bought this unit from them?

As mentioned before, take nylon stockings and cut it. Use glue or krazy glue to make it stick to the casing.

Everyone claims their so and so products are OEM but they probably arent. Some people have said that SE doesnt sell replacement housings and even had SE reply back to them stating that. Reading the auction, item comes from HK/China so its probably a knock-off. If I didnt order from cnn.cn already, I would of probably given it a try.

If the plastic cover does at least what its suppose to do just like the metal counter part, I dont care if its plastic. It still looks nice and will protect the lens.

Posted by: JeepMaster

The one I got from CNN.CN is pretty good in quality. Nice fit, with speaker mesh. The black cover color is a tiny bit more shinny than the origial color. The lense cover is plastic with a metal plate glued on, either way it protects the lense, so it's no big deal. I guess I got lucky this time.

Posted by: tha_dream

@ glorfingal - yup i think its the flex cable...theres a small rip in the metal just before it gets slim leading to the light...i think i may have to buy another flex cable...or maybe ill try some electrical tape to see it that will work

Posted by: glorfingal

@tha_dream - your best bet is get a new flex - cnn.cn, I got one for the housing
swap (saves trying to peel off the light and stick onto another chassis)

Posted by: dirtysouth

ok..instead of using nylon can i use the stuff from headphones...like the cotton stuff from headphones u put in ur ear?

Posted by: MrDisco1

i cant believe i'm crazy enough to think about ordering *another* backplate kit from ebay :| but dang it i'm jealous of you all

Posted by: deeps7

I just did mine!!
Took very little time, and i'm a very happy man

Not much troubles at all, the hardest part was getting the white crap off the w810i mirror off.
Just a quick point regarding the scratching of cameras:

I have no idea how people are getting their camera's scratched, there is a fairly large clearance. What i THINK might be happening, is this:

The orange mirror from the w810i has the white rubber like crap on the back. Now, unless you COMPLETELY remove it (yes even those two tiny dots) it will sit too high, and your lens cover will brush your mirror and cause the feeling that it's hitting something. So make sure you COMPLETELY remove the white crap and make it flush throughout.

Posted by: m0rbid

Does anyone know where one can find the metal backplate of the k750i? Do the plastic versions of the backplate not work as well as the ones that are metal? I guess cnn changed suppliers for k750i backplates.

Posted by: deeps7

I got mine from cnn... ordered 25th arrived today

Metal backplate

So you had no problems with the slider mechanism of the plastic version, correct? That was my main concern but to have a metal lens cover would be pretty nice too.

Or vice versa!

Mines definately metal, it's a lot colder to touch atm, compared to the surrounding plastic.

It adds a bit of weight to the phone too might i add, perhaps the plastic isn't such a bad thing.

I noticed mine is cold when you touch it as well and a slight weight to it.

Posted by: JeepMaster

m0rbid,
The plastic version fits perfectly. It still has like a 1mm extra from the lense, so it's not gonna touch or scratch the lense at all. Mesh is a nice touch, it even has a foam seal around the speaker openning.

Ordered on 9/18. Shipped on 9/20. Arrived 9/27. I can't tell if it's plastic or metal. Doesn't really matter to me since it's a quality OEM piece. Mine did not have mesh on it but I don't mind. I didn't bother putting the stocking crap on it either.

Posted by: tominizer

This mod is dirty simple................ just finished. Thanks to you guys and cnn.cn. Took me under two minutes tops. Also bought a Silicone Skin Case as well for the K750i, modified it with a sharp knife for the upper keys.......and *BAM*...... done. Screen protectors are coming in on Saturday. Phone is protected.

I was wondering if the sound level was effected at all with the switch from 3 speaker holes to 1 on the K750....

Thanks!!!!

This was answered earlier in this thread. Sound level is NOT affected in any way. Also, there are really only two holes on the original casing, the third hole is purely for aesthetics.

Posted by: Darkn355

I did mine the other way around, K750/W800 with W810 back.

My K750 which I have flashed to W800.
W800 white front, W810 Black Middle, W810 White Back, W810 Black Camera lens.

The white is different on the W810. It's more white compared to the cream white of the W800. But it'll do for now...

Posted by: phattbam

interesting.. looks very cow-like.

Posted by: MrDisco1

clearly SE is missing out. they could have made billions selling cool total case replacement kits :P

Posted by: y2bandit

Had my k750 back for a couple of weeks and just got my unlocked w810i today. Paid $75 after $75 Cingular rebate. Anyways, I was itching to mod my phone. I thought I was going to have problems with the battery cover and I used the tape method..it works! I cut up some nylon yesterday and bought super glue today. Got home from work and started to glue the nylon to the k750 since it didnt come with a mesh. Waited about 5 mins to let it dry. Started unscrewing the screws, used my CVS discount card to pry the w810 housing off. Once it was off, I put the k750 backing on. Within less than 10 mins, I had it on! Thanks for the tips and tutorial!

Posted by: dirtysouth

i just did my mod...few things...
the back cover is really hard to take off. i was scared of breaking the back cover ahah

mine didnt come with the mesh, i didnt add any either, is that ok???

the back cover and battery cover is different colors then the w810i, its a little lighter than it...

the lens cover is plastic i believe

pretty neat mod, besides the fact its different colors haha

Posted by: JeepMaster

dirtysouth,
I'd add a mesh in there if I were you, unless you plan on taking the cover off to clean it once in a while. Since I keep my phone on my pocket all the time, it gets pretty dusty. I guess I was lucky getting one with mesh.
You can see from the pic that it has a foam seal around the mesh too.

Posted by: dirtysouth

true...

the mesh stuff on ear phones...u kno what im talkin about? not hte ones one that came with the phone..normal mp3/cd headphones...

can i just take that material and put it on the back cover? owuld that work?

Yes. Or just take some nylon stockings, cut it into a small piece and super glue it to the housing. I did that and it worked. My mesh is a little thicker than of what is pictured above. I took the top part of the nylon stocking since its thicker. Doesnt muffle the sound.

Posted by: dirtysouth

haha ok..i jsut took a the whole earphone piece and placed it on there haha...sound still good

Hey from looking at your pix, i was wondering if the w810's mirror could sit in the slot instead of the k750's silicone piece on the lens cover.

You talking about orange mirror from the w810 replacing the silver piece on the lens cover? If so, i think it might. I have an extra w810i orange mirror and the k750 back housing (already placed on). I was going to change the silver mirror on the k750 but decided not to.

Posted by: glorfingal

you'll need to cut off the backing from the orange one to get it to sit low enough
in the 750 back, not a major job, just mind your fingers !!!!

Posted by: JeepMaster

You might have problem cutting the orange piece off since it's so small. The author of this thread did it. Check out pic on the first thread post. If it was me, it would just leave it. You can't even see it when the cover is close anyway.

Posted by: Ben-

Actually if the w810 mirror is the same size as the k750 it might not fit. The width of the k750 mirror is 0.250 of an inch, while the k750's silicone piece is about 0.2480 of an inch. But i want to see how it looks like, might look odd when you open the k750 lens cover since you would see 2 mirrors.

So you're talking about the rubber antanna cover thing on the right side of the cover. I actually tried that when I first got the cover. Pop out my old orange mirror and pop in to the new cover. It does not fit as the orange mirror is too small and it just falls out. I did not like the look of it because it's so out of place. It sits pretty far in, so it looks like there's a hole on the side. I guess if you really want to, you can put a dab of silicon glue and just lay it on top so it's level with the cover. And yes it's looks funny when the lens cover is open with the two mirror there.

Posted by: glorfingal

the idea is to cut off the rubber from the orange 810 antenna plug, prise off the silver
750 mirror (under the slide) and glue the orange bit in it's place, leaving the sliver 750
antenna cover in it's original location !!

Hope i get my back covers soon befor i scratch the camera.

So, has anyone thought of putting the Silver K750 case on their phone?

Posted by: glorfingal

@cashmoney - that would need a silver 810 front at least, and the ones I've
seen so far are "somewhat lacking" in quality !!!

Posted by: starman_dx

i put the silver 750 on my white w810
looks pretty damn sexy

So your signature says that you switched your w810 to white. Does that mean that you did away with your modded k750 back plate?

Can you post pictures? I want to see and so does my girlfriend since she has a white w810

@cash - yes. although all the parts are lying around in case I feel the need
for a black phone again :-)

Just ordered my K750i back faceplate. I wonder how long it'll take for it to arrive here in New Zealand... I can't wait to mod it. Hehe.

Posted by: DjShiznit

Any thoughts on a suitable case for the modded phone? My phone is on order from LaLa West, and I also ordered one of those "crystal" clear cases. I just put in my order for the K750i back plate and battery cover (being so inexpensive, I couldn't resist). Would I just be limited to getting a screen protector?

hawkbigbb, did you get your back cover form cnn.cn in regular mail, or did it come from ups, fedx, or somewhare elese other than regular postage mail?

Just ordered the k750i backplate. Great writeups BTW. I was wondering what I was going to do. Next question, any way to cover the screen so that It doesn't get scratched? How about a belt clip? Anything?

Ummm something called a screen protector? SEARCH the boards for your answer on which to choose.

lol personally I reckon belt clips don't go well with modern cellphones, esp. one as stylish as the W810i.

But by all means, get a screen protector. Last thing you wanna do is scratch it accidentally. They're not too expensive and I doubt you'll ever have to get another one cuz they're so durable and stay stuck on the screen.

Anyone know if doing this mod voids your warranty (i.e. I've got Cingular and their insurance)?

Posted by: y2bandit

No dont think so. If something is wrong with your phone down the road, just take the k750 housing off and put the original w810i back housing back on. They wont notice.

Posted by: aminuzi22

Oh ok ... thought since you had to physically trim parts of the back off it would be noticeable.

If I remember right it came from Fed Ex.

You only trim parts on the back cover on the k750 back housing only inorder for it to fit on the w810i middle housing. When you get your phone warrantied, you dont give Cingular the k750 housing. You put it back to its original condition with the w810i back housing.

Posted by: aminuzi22

Oh my bad, I thought you were trimming the oem w810i housing. Thanks for the clarification!

Why would you trip the OEM w810i if all you're doing is just taking it off? Just make sure you download the .doc file that gives you the steps to swapping the back housings.

Posted by: DoomDay

Just got my covers, did all 3 in less than 50 min!!
My slider was metal, and it has liner for the speaker hole.

I just received my K750i backplate yesterday in the mail, and did the mod just now! I have to say, it is an easy mod to do, even a mod no0b like me could do it without messing up! Only difficult part for me was taking the original plate off, for I feared if I used too much force, I'd rip it off and kill my backplate

I have new-found love for my W810i/K750i hybrid now hehe :P

O I also changed the silver mirror to an orange one I got from cnn.cn as well. Will post some pictures later, once I find my camera lol

it's actually rather easy. Take something with a very fine point, like a needle, and
push the silver one off from the inside. You'll see there's a small hole to let the air out
when the silver is glued on.
Next trim the rubber away from the back of the orange mirror with an xacto or scalpel.
Once you have just the orange piece of hard plastic, crazy(super) glue the little beastie
into the now vacant hole :-)

I dont remember seeing a little pin hole on the back of the k750 housing. I got mine from cnn.cn. I'll have to take a look. Its no biggie since the orange mirror only costed me $0.99. But it would be nice to use it now since my cousins boyfriend liked the mod to the w810 and wants the k750 back. So now I need to try and distinguish between our phones.

Sorry, I must have quoted the wrong post.

You get either like a needle or a micro fine point screwdriver and get it out, can't you push it out from the other side.

Also, I never noticed the Cingular logo on the W810i back plate, wow.

Posted by: glorfingal

yup - use the pin hole from the back side to lift it up a little then pry it
out gently so as to not damage the grooved face of the 750i's cover :-)

You can use the same trick to remove branding badges from the front cover
as well.

Posted by: y2bandit

Thanks. I'll have to take a look at the underside of the back housing. Also, you mentioned trimming the "rubber" on the orange mirror. You mean that greyish piece? If so, its plastic and not rubber.

Or use one of those mechanical pencils; that's what I used haha. If the housing you got has the gauze/mesh covering the speaker grille, then it'll be really close to that. My pinhole was right beside the gauze/mesh sealing.

Yeah I saw a few photos of the Cingular-branded W810i's on the net somewhere. I prefer the original Walkman "W" logo though. It looks so cool. If only someone decides to mass produce K750i's-style battery covers, but with the "W" Walkman logo, then I'd be a happy man! Hehe.

Big-ups to glorfingal too for writing that easy-to-follow Word document about how to do this mod! Couldn'tve done it without the guide! Cheers!

Oh, it's actually REALLY, REALLY hard rubber, not plastic. I just cut the rubber bit off last night. Took me a while cuz I didn't want to screw it up.

Posted by: puzzler

Anyone consider using a silver k750i back, black w810i mid, and white w810i front?

Also i saw in a pic a while back someone who had both black and silver keys. Is that difficult to do? Do you just cut the keypad?

How much did you have to cut off?

you cut it off right where it meets the mirror. Don't worry if you don't get all of it in one go, the stuff left over can be pulled off. Thats what I did.

Just jab the rubber part with a tiny screwdriver then start "sawing" the rubber off with an exacto knife

Thanks. So pretty much the whole grey piece.

Yup, all of the grey rubber has to be taken off

Posted by: natt108

I managed to break away about 2mm of plastic on the main body near circuit board on the left hand side (camera facing you). After putting k750i back piece on, it fits perfect but I can feel it 'wobble' on that spot that I broke off.

Try to be gentle...

Thats silver. There is no white k750i. Official colors are black and silver. If you want high quality stuff that is close to the original thing, order from cnn.cn.

Posted by: glorfingal

there are claimed "Pearl White" 750i housings on ebay - the quality is, shall we say,
poor !!!

I am not sure it it ever a conclusion was reached, but apparently both are right.....

This was discussed in other forum:

The fact of being able to cover the lens is what matters

(I did not see it posted in this forum, if it was, sorry )

Posted by: iZero

I just did this mod and it took me around 10 minutes at most. I got what appears to be an OEM k750i cover from cnn.cn. It had the screen behind the speaker grill. I have no problems with the lens cover sliding over the lens. There's plenty of clearance. I ordered the white buttons as well but I don't think they will look that good on the all black phone IMO. Additionally, I ordered the orange chrome button but I decided against its use. The orange probably hinders its use as a self-portrait mirror and any misalignment made by sloppy cutting or excess glue will make its function useless.

Posted by: iZero

One more advantage to this mod: When you place the phone camera side down on a flat surface you can hear the music playing much better since the grill lifts it away from the surface.

Posted by: g0nk

I just got my K750i backplate and installed it, did the mod in like 5 minutes flat, worked like a charm!!

I got it from an eBay seller though, same guy here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...em=300041573413

this one comes with the metal backplate, and it feels great!! also has mesh over the speaker grill already installed..

pics to come later when i get a chance.. need to find some superglue to mount the orange mirror...

Nope. I have someone home in the morning. They didnt leave a notice on my door. When entered the tracking number, it says "ARRIVAL AT UNIT". I'll have to ask my dad since he works for the post office and see what he says. If anything, I'll have him go check it out.

These postal people are getting lazy or just stupid. I ordered Clarivue from eBay as well..they claim it was a undeliverable address so it was sent back to sender. Its like 3 weeks and I'm still waiting for my screen protector. Hopefully its here soon. Been using an extra screen protector from my old Nextel i730

Just bought the k750 back and battery cover from cnn.cn. Can't wait to get it

Posted by: y2bandit

I want to put the white w800 on my girls white w810. Would I modify it the same way I would when I did it to the k750?

Posted by: glorfingal

@y2 - I would expect that the 750 back mod should work on an 800
version - not tried so I can't confirm though .....

@gonk - why would you want to ? Given the apparent line up of the back
onto a 810 I would guess the 750 middle would accept the 810 internal parts,
however you may runinto trouble with the pcb's mounting clips.

I see that you fitted the w800 on your w810. Do I modify it the same way I did to the k750?

Posted by: montsb

Do you know... Will the Krusell case still fit the phone if you put the k750 back on the w810? I would love the slide cover of the 750 back, but also love the Krusell cases. Very cool mod though!!!

Posted by: glorfingal

I have the orange and black krussell for the 810. With the 750 back on it the
case bulges somewhat - not enough to prevent the poppers engaging, but
enough to make it look wrong - mine now runs without coverings at all, well
apart from martin fields !!

Posted by: g0nk

Ok, I did some surgery last night..

I now had my w810i modded with the following..

Frontplate + Keypad = Stock w810i
Middleplate + Backplate + battery cover = K750i
All side buttons = Stock w810i

it took me about an hour to do, and it came together very nicely, i'll take pics tomorrow, don't have another camera available at the moment..

talk about nerve wracking though.. heh never taken a phone completely apart to swap cases like that before.. had to trim off a small tab on the top of the middle plate to get it to fit right, but it worked perfectly..

Posted by: DjShiznit

Well cnn.cn shipped my order on 10/18, I just got it today 11/02. I must say this mod is easy as hell, and well worth the $20. I also ordered an orange mirror, but opted not to install it as I was too anxious to put my phone back together. I may put it on later, but at $0.99, it's not a huge loss. Having the back plate, and the martin fields screen protector installed, I now feel totally comfortable about using my phone w/o a crystal clear or condom style case I'm not even sure if there would be any options for cases, as the phone is now a hybrid. Has anybody found a solution to that dilemma?

Posted by: montsb

Thanks Glorfingal on your responce to my question. I believe that is the Krussell case, Urban with Multidapt®, I was looking to get as well. Seems as though the backside of my w810i will remain stock, as I want its home to be in a Krussell case, safe from the outside world. New project, daughter dropped her Moto L7 in a puddel, and looks as if she stepped on it. Full housing kit, LCD lens, and it should be (hopefully) good as new.

Just got my cover from CNN today.
Looks like the slide cover is plastic with a metal front.
http://www.telusplanet.net/public/eching/IMG_1458.JPG

You can see the molding circle through the lens opening.
I also got the grill mesh on it. However, it's right behind the mirror, which I was gonna swap out for the orange one (from CNN too).
Too much effort right now, so I'll just leave it for now.

well its basically the same thing as the w800 cover, just different coloring. I dunno what people are saying about it opening up all the time. The thing that slides back and forth to open up the is a lot smaller than the k750 slider. So i dunno how that could be.

Originally I had the w800 backing on my phone. (actually I thinkl I was the first one on hofo to modify the back of w810 and put a lens cover on it. Hence me saying W806i is back)

I changed it from the k750 because I like change and that the k750 mod is getting very common lol. So with that being said.. no don't go for this mod... its crap lol Stay AWAY!!!

Posted by: CManT1914

Well I splurged and bought the silver AND black k750 backplates/battery covers, and the k750 middleplate as well. So I might be able to make it look decent. I'll try and get some pics up when I get the stuff in and put it together.

Posted by: y2bandit

What would be a good paint to use to paint the backplates that would not chip or peel off?

Posted by: JeepMaster

In my old nokia, I've spray painted it with automotive paint. Give it a good sanding all over and spray. I did it with 2 light color coats and 1 light clear coat. I even waxed it afterwards with automotive wax. I used it for 3 years and it's still good. Don't get too carried away with the spray thou, or it will not fit properly.

Got my new w810i from Cingular in the mail yesterday. I had ordered the k750 back and battery cover from cnn.cn when I had my other one, but I sold the phone before the parts got here . Oh well...today is official "debrand with Wotanserver and mod with k750 back and b/cover" day!
Just printed out the glorfingal instructions, and I'm stoked!!

Posted by: BlueCalx

Where are these instructions that glorfingal wrote up? I looked through this thread some for them... and in other threads as well - but no luck.

One important question that I also haven't been able to find the answer to:

Regarding the purple coating on the w810i lens - Does that coating and glass come off with the rear cover, or is it mounted to the camera itself?
Reason I'm asking this - if I swap the rear cover for a white w810i - will I get a new lens filter (purple film layer)? Thanks

Thanks

I think the instructions are in the first 5 pages.

The camera/lense is one piece. There is only a hole in the cover.

Hi, I have a w850 and I don't really like the cover. Is there any other back cover of any phone that would fit my w850? (also good looking) Thanks!

Has anyone use a white w810i with w800 middle and back???

If so I would like to see a few pics. That would be a nice mod. I know the w800 back is a bit creamy. Is there any aftermarket w800 back that is as white as the w810?

you could try sanding down the w800 back. Since the cream color is painted onto white plastic. Or just paint it with white RC car paint. I did that with mine (but black) and it hasn't chipped yet, almost a month now. (Compared to the last time i tried paintiing it with regular paint, it started chipping after 2 days.)

if it was painted for the first time, it would probably look natural, but since this is the third time i painted it, I have a lot of scratch marks from when I was resanding to take the older paint off ( the ones that didnt work) Right now it has a texture looking like black shiny leather lol.

lol...im thinking of just buying a screen protector and cut it into the camera lens shape and stick it on there. Why havent anyone thought of that.

So after having it finely sanded down (first attempt's paint job) and repainted, it still gives off the shiny leather look?

But then again, you cannot sand plastic to become as smooth as before...?

Bleh, got scammed on ebayed so I might consider painting my own...
