so the mod is not necessary then, I just bought a white 810 and don't feel like any of the mods are good looking enough for the white... (silver combo)

so if I just have the round protector for the lens-all problems solved right??

Both my roommate and I have w810i's..

his is unbranded from buy.com

mine is a stock cingular from a local store..

Saw the mod. liked it.. hit up cnn.cn ordered.. took 1 week total from Hong Kong to Lubbock Texas.. got the screwdriver out and did the mod.. easy to do.. and it looks great..

full photo's here http://golookitupyourdamnself.kusto...hp?g2_itemId=79

Roommate is going to check it out tonight.. and if he likes it. order parts to do his.. this phone is one of the best I have ever had.. I love everything it does.. and I am the ONLY one in the city here with this mod that I know of.. going to the Cingular store today to show the owners..

Posted by: -enigma-

anyone have the instructions still? the link for the file doesn't work anymore.

Posted by: QuiGonJinn

Not really instructions. I know I saw the post with them.. and if your reading this site I would hope you have some basic common sense..

buy the parts..

take out the 2 Phillips head screws.. pop off old back.. test fit new. when it fits as you want it to.. screw it down.. enjoy

Posted by: -enigma-

actually there were full instructions with pictures. post #26. i don't HAVE to have them... but it would give me peace of mind to read over them once more.

Posted by: u8mypaygoo

hey guy! i was thinking about an all silver back, with the front and middle stock. would it look good with an orange mirror or silver? thoughts?!also, where can i get scrren protecters that fit the w810i?

Posted by: Skarbro

I have a problem. I followed the instructions to a tee. Cut off the 2 little tabs on the side with the light lens, just like the instructions say. But that corner isn't flush. There's about a 1.5 mm gap in the corner. When I push down, I feel resistance. How can I fix this? Here are some pics.

Posted by: Skarbro

Nevermind! I figured it out. The tiny tab at the top on that side somehow bent down. After straightening it, it now sits flush. I'm lucky it didn't break off.

Posted by: navinsivaram

i think its cause when the cover gets removed when u put it in ur jeans pocket then the cam turns on.

Posted by: navinsivaram

any idea how to remove battery & sim from 810i. there seems to be no proper notch to pull them

Posted by: brokencds

anyone hav pics of black 810 w/ silver 750 back plate? Or does it jus look better to go black on black

Posted by: u8mypaygoo

brokencds...thats what im thinking of doing as soon as i get my w810i!!black wit silver back.muahaha

Posted by: Pimpwerx

Just finished my swap a few minutes ago. Looks fantastic. Feels a bit more "substantial" than before, which is good. Best of all, I won't feel the need to keep wiping the lense everytime my fingertip finds its way to it. The door on mine is metal, btw. The spring works well, and everything fits snug. One thing is the camera shield seems to rock a tiny bit when closed, but no biggy. Sound is a bit more muted, though. More of that "in a can" sound than before, though hardly an issue. I've yet to try the speakerphone, though.

Could someone be so kind to link me to a tutorial on removing the faceplate? The old credit card trick is being met with quite a bit of resistance. If nothing else, I'd like to know that I can remove the faceplate without having to remove the back cover again. I don't really want to fiddle with it too much b/c of how delicate the screen cover is that I put in place.

You must be kidding right!

Posted by: glorfingal

@pimpwerx - the front cover is held on with the same clips as the back so keep at it.
The one that presents the real headache is the one at the top - it's right in the middle
and can be a real stubborn so and so to get loose !

Got a couple of quick question and i'm to lazy to read all 28 pages
of this thread.

Does the sliding piece come off of the back faceplate?
cause i would like to paint it and leave the sliding peice sliver.

Can the middle housing peice from the k750 be used with the w810i?

And does any one have a w810i front faceplate for sell?

Thanks

Anybody have a spare k750i black battery cover to sell to me in the GTA? =)

Posted by: McLaren_F1

ecksdeE get it off www.cnn.cn

Posted by: MP

my camera lens (or top cover plastic thingie) is scratched. Do the new back plates come with a new plastic lense thingie (k750 back plate and bettery cover ordered today)? / Can you replace it? If so how?

Posted by: Bored&Gorgeous

I've got a silver housing for my w810 that I got off ebay. I'm Usin the middle and the round plate that goes around the camera with the black front, buttons and back plate. Dosn't look bad but I'm gonna be ordering the k750 backplate soon.

Posted by: randomwalk101

glorfingal,

can you post the direction again please? Direction posted in post #26 was deleted..thanks

Posted by: randomwalk101

nevermind..i found it...thx

Posted by: MP

Well it came today. After a few weeks of waiting my backplate and battery cover finaly got here. Guess it takes a while to get here from Hong Kong (cnn.cn). Had to trim a few things to get it to fit correctly. One tab on the side by the "flash" (if you can call it that) and had to trim down one of the top "hinge ish" tabs (not cut it off just make it thinner) One of the top tabs was thicker than the phone housing would recieve. Nice mod. I can believe that SE would even make a phone without a lense cover.

-- Click here for some photos of the mod (im not smart enough to figgure out how to put them in this post)
All pics taken with the w810i

after installing the k750i backplate to the w810i could i use the k750i cases for it? cuz it seems like w810i front is a bit more rounded than the k750i has anyone tried? and is the screen size different too? dunt have phones yet getting w810i tmr so dunt realyl know

Posted by: naming69

Well after reading this thread I ordered the K750i backplate from cnn.cn and installed it. It looks like the lens cover on the one I got is plastic, not metal, and mine didn't come with the fabric covering the speaker vent either. My fix for that was to cut a small piece (about 1-2" square) from one of my wife's black sheer socks (like stocking material). I used a toothpick to put a fine/thin line of super glue around the inner side of the speaker vent. I then put the fabric on it, made sure it stuck, then used a small scissors to cut away the excess fabric and voila. I also had to trim away the little plastic tab on the back plate nearest where the LEDs are to make it fit flush. All in all it looks pretty good. I'm really happy with it.

Posted by: XxMadDogxX

I've also ordered the parts from cnn.cn and I should receive them any day. My question for you naming69 or some body else is can you post a picture that shows what plastic little tab has to be trimmed in order for the back plate to be flash with the phone,

or this is the one.

Hey XxMadDogxX, it's either that one or the one to the left of it in your photo. I can't recall but if you pair it up with the rest of the phone you'll see where there's a space for one of them to fit or not. I just used an Xacto knife and lightly cut away until it fit smoothly. Sorry I wasn't more helpful.

I didnt have to trim that down when I did mine. Just try to install it and see if it even needs trimed...

OK. I'll do that guys, check it out first before cutting. Thanks.

Hi I've already ordered my w810i and I can't wait for it to arrive in the post so I can mod it!

I'm thinking of buying the white w810i covers for variety.. So my question is: does the back camera lens/frame/ring have an extra layer of see-through plastic/glass shielding (like how the front glass screen can be easily replace)??? Or is the actual real lens totally exposed even without protection from the back cover?!

Cause if it doesn't then I guess theres Ill just go with the k750i external cover mod option..

Cheers
ocha

Posted by: g3off

hey...ive read thru this whole thread and i was still wondering if anyone knows if the k750 middleplate is exactly the same as the w810's??
if so then cutting of the tabs for the k750 back plate isnt neccessary is it?
thx

The lense you can touch is attached to the camera. Its just a hole in the case. it it CAN be scratched.

Thanks mattsW810i

That has helped me decide on what to order!
One k750i back cover.

Hi all, just got my w810i and I have the k750 back plate and battery cover in my cart ready to order from cnn.cn. Thats all I need right? What about the w810 screen protector film they sell, anyone try it? For $2, heck throw that in too.

Posted by: QuiGonJinn

You can go the $2 route.. and it will work..

I go to wal-mart.. and grab the screen protectors for the PSP... take scisors to them.. you get 2 psp screen protectors for $4-6.. and one will make atleast 2 for the phone..

I take 1 psp.. and make 1 for my Ipod.. and one for the w810i... so for the $4 investment.. I get 2 Ipod and 2 phone screen protectors..

best of luck.

Posted by: csky12

I was wondering, with a screen protector, will the strokes when I wipe the screen problem be fixed?? because everytime the screen gets dusty, I wipe it and it always leave the lines behind and it's not nice, does the screen protector solve the problem?

Posted by: ocha_shinai

i bought an exim spuc. its awesome. they should come pre-attached to all phone screens. clear as and tough. protects my w810i screen nicely

Posted by: tecz0r

Finally got the back cover today and installed it--it looks amazing. I decided to make a video of it and put it on youtube.com: http://youtube.com/watch?v=TUAQTgW2rT4 Enjoy!

Posted by: MP

Nice. Use caution with opening the cover with your finger in the middle of the slide. That little metal cover will start to develop a "dent". Mine did it! Im just waiting for it to come off...

Posted by: jooshua

Posted by: ajmatson

Finally got the backing 3 weeks later but anyway it works like a charm.

Posted by: Mach1Chris

if not.. any idea where I can get it?

Thx,
Chris

Bit late joining the modding bandwagon but hey ho.

Just a query really, notice that people have been getting their k750i backplate from cnn.cn. ATM they only have the backplate 7.99 and battery cover 3.99. Are these the right ones to get? It doesn't say if they are OEM or not (I have no idea what OEM means but people have mentioned this is the one to get)...

Thanks!

UPDATE: Just bought a full OEM housing on ebay from a seller in the UK (not sure I could have waited 3 weeks if buying from abroad) just hope I can mod it without damaging my beloved w810i.

SE doesnt' make oem housing so all housing claimed to be oem should be high quality.... and yes many people have gotten those 2 parts and they are of high quality...

Thanks! I kinda figured it out by reading the whole thread...oh well hopefully the housing that I've just bought is of high quality too *fingers crossed*

Now all I have to do is wait for it to reach me and pluck up enough courage to do it...everyone here seems to say it's easy and takes 10-15mins but knowing me I'll do something wrong and wreck my phone! Must. Think. Positive. Thoughts.

a lot of the housings from UK are typical original, usually removed from probably water damaged phones, etc. At leasts thats my experience with a 903sh housing and a faceplate for a nokia 6230, they cost more too because of it, though sometimes I wish they were more upfront about minor scratches

its actually pretty easy... few screws and something to unlock the pins or w/e they're called and the back cover is off i think the hard part is modding the k750i to fit in w810i...gl tho

Thanks! I'll let you know how I get on..though sure I'll be on here just before the modding begins asking lots of questions no doubt

Posted by: who_me

Have just done my very first mod OK so it wasn't that difficult but I'm still very proud of the fact that I've done it. Though the back casing (on the side that has been flushed) doesn't sit as close to the phone as I would like (I have tried cutting it a bit more but don't think I can cut any more off - don't have a dainty enough knife). Not sure about using a bit of super glue either as don't want the back cover permanently on there (just in case).

But I'm happy enough, no more finger smudges on the lense when I'm talking on the phone Thanks for everyones help! You guys are a friendly bunch.

Posted by: JeepMaster

There are two taps that you need to cut to make a perfectly flush fit. Did you cut both of them?

Posted by: who_me

Yep cut them both. Might just be that I haven't cut it down as much as I should, can't get any closer really as don't have a suitable knife. It's not a big deal, just doesn't sit as perfectly as I'd like it to and there's a tiny bit of creaking. To the casual observer I doubt it's noticeable. Just hope that rain doesn't manage to trickle in or is that me just being really paranoid?

Hello everyone. I am brand new here and this is my first post.

So I just got a 810 and I stubled upon this forum as I was trying to find a case for my phone, and then I read this thread (the whole thing!). I definitely want to do this mod, but I am unsure as to where to purchase the rear cover. It sounds like cnn is now shipping rear housings of less quality. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find a nice one with a metal cover?

Thanks for the help and this is a super informative thread.

u acn get a borken k750i and take it off tat...or test ur luck on ebay..

Can anyone please post the instructions, the file link on post #26 says file not found.

Help Please. Thanks in advance.

Posted by: -Paradigm-

i just got my 810 and plan on doing this, but i have a question. a lot of people are saying the quality of cnn.cn oem items have gone down. some people recieve plastic sliders and some metal. which product did you purchase (full front/back set or just back and battery cover) and which did you recieve (metal or plastic)? im asking this to see if maybe theres a relation to what was ordered and the quality of product. maybe if i were to buy the back and batter seperately, i will get the higher quality one then if i were to buy the whole set which is cheaper in price since you get 3 pieces for a few bucks more.

Posted by: who_me

I live in the UK and so rather than wait 3 weeks or so for one from cnn I bought the whole housing off ebay. It's very good quality (if a little more expensive cos it was for everything not just the back plate). Pretty much the original casing, has the sony ericsson logo, metal slider. Overall very happy with it

Posted by: jv982

who_me,
Who was the seller that you purchased from? I wouldn't mind buying one of ebay, but I am scared to get a cheapo replica.

I ordered from CNN twice and both times got high quality covers. Bought the back cover and battery cover only. Note that the lens cover is actually plastic but it has a metal piece glue to the surface to make it look metal. Unless I got screw both times and others are getting SOLID metal lens covers.

Got it from this company.

I've not had a problem with the quality but like I said is a little expensive because it's the full housing.

It's not a huge deal to take the one from the original seems like it pops right out

You have to cut the rubber backing off of the mirror from the W810 to put on the K750 backplate, once you do that you won't be able to put back onto the W810 backplate if you decide to use it again.

im still a little sketchy on chanagin the face plate of the w810i.
so i gotta unscrew the t6 screws on the back inorder to pry the front off?
and also: i heard that the w800 back plate lens cover can slide on and off(in other words, not protect the screen 100% of the time) and is loose.. is this true? thanx

edit:: howz the quality of the white w810i keypad from cnn???

I never had any issues with the stuff from cnn - always good quality.
Yes, to get the front off you need to remove the 2 screws by the base of the
battery.
I used the K750 back not the w800 so can't comment, but never had the
cover slide open when using the k750 version.

Posted by: u8mypaygoo

thanx glorfingal. i just like the looks of the w800 back more than the k750i because the k750i looks like tehres an extra brick.lol..no offence. its just my taste i guess.
..so anyone else have to comment on the w800 backplate problems?

Just got my w810i and just filled out an order on cnn for the k750i back and battery cover along with the orange mirror. Anybody find a case for this though? I was thinking of getting the silicone/rubberized black w810i case, and then cutting out the back portion for the camera slide... any ideas or options?

Posted by: jayrich86

can somebody email me the instructions?

nevermind, i got the instructions, what about the case tho? any ideas?

Posted by: jayrich86

I'm actually going to get the rubberized case for the 750i then cut out the front carefully to fit the w810i hopefully this works

Posted by: oliv3r

It's hard to read all the 35 pages and I'm not good at English language so could anyone just simply tell me if there is any pictures or guides what should be cut off and how to take it apart...? Do I have to remove the faceplate as well, when I only want to change the backplate? Just discovered that the W810i's glass that has the purple UV protection covering that gets scratched off too easily and on my W810i, it completely has, that the glass is not part of the housing, what point is it then to mod it with a K750i backplate if it is already scratched? But it's cool anyway, so I'll mod it anyway I hope I can handle it, I'm just 14 years old. Can anyone say if the ones on cnn.cn are quality OEM, it doesn't say it in the name. And some have been talking about metal and plastic lens cover, which one is it there on cnn.cn? Also, can someone PLEASE upload glorfindal's instructions doc?

I've been thinking about buying one of these cases and taking just the front of it and buying one of these cases and taking just the back and trying to get them to clip together. Any one tried this yet?

But it's cool anyway, so I'll mod it anyway I hope I can handle it, I'm just 14 years old. Can anyone say if the ones on cnn.cn are quality OEM, it doesn't say it in the name. And some have been talking about metal and plastic lens cover, which one is it there on cnn.cn? Also, can someone PLEASE upload glorfindal's instructions doc?

Ok as far as cnn.cn goes go for the backplate, thats where I got mine and its great (dont forget to buy the battery door cover as well). As for the instructions for the mod itself you should be able to figure this out very quickly by yourself but since you asked.. the only part you really need to know is you have to cut the tab that is on the upper left side of the backplate for it to fit. It doesnt have to be perfect it just has to be out of the way. You do not have to take the faceplate off to do this. it should take you all of 5 minutes to do. Just be careful, take your time, dont scratch anything or touch any of the circuitry while the backplate is off.

sounds like thats a great idea... you should contact the seller and ask if they are interchangeable, that would be a great solution

I asked from glorfingal and got the tutorial reuploaded, thanks!

I just did this mod yesterday and I am very pleased with it. Actually, the k750 backing feels a lot sturdier than the origanal one. It doesn't squeek anymore when you touch the back. I recommend this to every w810 owner.

Posted by: milenko11

Oh and I ordered mine from Cnn.cn and I'm happy with the quality. The slide cover is metal, but mine didn't have the cloth over the speaker part so I ripped one out of an old razr and that worked great.

Posted by: oliv3r

Damn, getting it from cnn.cn to Estonia doubles the price... I think I'll not mod it then, there are ones in Estonia's mobile phone repair shops that they say are original and cost approximately 40 USD, but I don't trust them....

i have an already modded w810i with k750 back housing for sale if anyones interested

Hi Guys,

Just wondering what the significance of the nylon, over the speaker cover is?

What if you do not glue any one, what is the downside?

Thanks!

Hey there, the mesh is just to minimize any dust that may possibly get into the phone. Like I mintioned in my previous post, a square inch of ladies' stocking/nylon material cut to fit and crazy-glued around the inside of the speaker grill should suffice.
Hope this helps.

It does help, thanks for the reply

hey
i'm new to the sony ericsson brand, and i really don't have time to read through all 33 pages of posts, though i've read through the first few pages, so i don't know if that has been posted already

but for those of us with white w810i's, is this mod possible using the w800i back cover (since the k750i doesn't come in white)?

Posted by: canucklion

well, spend the time to read it, lazy ***.

Well, since I don't have much of a life, I did some searching. I know I've seen some smokin' hot pics of different mod configurations (I think in this thread), but I did find this post.

Anyone have the glorfingal's guide again? I checked most of the links and they were all gone. And just to double check, the k750i midplate can be used on the w810i right? and from 1-10, how hard is it to change the midplate?

Posted by: JBL4Z3

can someone please re-upload any guides on how to do this?? everything i found says "File Not Availible".

Posted by: naming69

Hey JBL4Z3,
I don't know if my post on this (post# 436) is of any help but here it is...
It's pretty straight forward but I'm going from memory so bare with me! If I missed a step or two somebody please correct me or fill in the gaps.
- First remove the battery cover.
- Unscrew the (2) screws that hold down the bottom of the main back plate.
- I believe after that you need to use a thin tool like a swiss army blade or something to start working your way around the rest of the backplate, carefully prying it off.
From there you can read below regarding glueing the piece of stocking material to the inside of the speaker port on the back plate, etc, etc.

Hope this helps.

I'm really happy with it.

how do i order the black backplate.

Would silver backplate with silver battery door look good on a black w810i??

Posted by: gr3gg0

i placed an order with them 5 days ago and it hasn't even shipped yet, and they haven't replied to my email asking them why yet... are they still/were they ever legit? anyone else have this kind of experience with them?

Posted by: steva11

i had problems with cnn.cn, and got a refund after a month. I got a black backplate from www.gsm4world.us

i haven't recieved it yet, but it was shipped a few days ago...should be 7-14 business days depending on your area of the world.

interesting..i will send another email and if it isn't replied to by 24-48 hours ill just get a refund..not too sure how..i did it through paypal..would paypal take care of it?

Sorry to hear that, I have ordered from cnn 3 different times now, I had no problems with them what so ever. I also know that if you pay the big bucks for shipping (late Christmas present...) that it can be here on the west coast within 2 days! I was impressed! I was looking for a W800i back in White, because I put the whole White housing on my W810i, or put my W810i in the White housing. Not sure how it would look with a silver one if I were to put a K750 back on it... Although, it might look really sharp... Hope you get your orders soon!!!!

lol it turned out that the reason nothing was happening with the order and why i wasn't getting emailed back was because their office was closed for chinese new years, (i got an email today explaining).

i've changed my opinion, they're seem like good people to do e-business with.

theres a few pics on hofo of a white w810i w/ a silver back and it looked really nice, i'll post some pics when im done with the mod.

Posted by: steva11

i was thinking of the silver/white combo, but decided just to go with black. it would be cool to see some pics...a black keypad would look cool on that.

Posted by: montsb

I have tried to upload pictures of mine on here, but guess I am not smart enough to figure it out. Says that files are too big or something like that. I just have the white housing, but could put the black keypad back in it. I changed my sister's also, but she actually liked the white front and back, with the middle black... made it easy on me, didn't have to tear down and rebuild the whole phone...looks fairly nice surprisingly.

cnn.cn and gsm4world do not have the k750i back plate by itself, any idea where to get one?

they're about the same price as in the whole housing vs just the backplate if i remember correctly it came out to $2-$5 more for the whole housing...

Posted by: aw614

hmm I'll probably just make it all white then or all white with orange middle plate instead.

Dont want to put too much into this w810i i got, it was only 50 bucks

got my black k750 backplate from gsm4world this morning! switched it today before work! looks sweet. it said 7-14 business days, but i got it in 6 daysincluding the weekend.

i only got the full housing also...couldn't find a backplate only.

gsm4world even sent the tool that fits the k750 screws (eventhough i didn't use it at all, still cool).

i'd definitely order from them again. i'll try and upload my pics tonight of the change.

this is my next swap. just finished my w580/s500, and am lookin to do this to my w810 backup.

Posted by: gr3gg0

i finally got my silver k750i parts from www.cnn.cn, it took a while for some unknown reason but i'm still happy. it looks good on the white w810i.

will post pics on the weekend

Posted by: montsb

I would love to put a W700i/W800i back on my, made it white, W810i, but have not been able to find a housing for it at all. Would think that it would look really wonderful, and it would have a cover for the camera. Seems that the W770i/W800i camera cover is sleek and has a slimmer profile. Personally, I think that would look smashing! Have many of you tweeked the os (Da_G's thread) on the W810i? I have only done the sound drivers, and what a difference! Now I can hear it in the bars and clubs as well. Seems as though it made the Blue tooth louder also. I was wondering how any of the other camera drivers performed and if they make that much difference or if they loose some of the quality in the pictures...

Posted by: _LawmaN_

wow, this thread is still going strong after all this time lol.

Posted by: aw614

ok I just did housing, but I cant get battery cover off lol

Posted by: montsb

Man, they sure look SWEET in White! I love mine sense I switched to the white housing! I am still thinking that a white or silver back off of a w800i would look great! I have not seen one for sale for quite some time. Anyone else happen to see one lately? Oh yeah, aw615, nice pictures you posted!!! Oh so SWEET!

Posted by: aw614

it was worth it just modded it with the usual patch unlock, swf wallpaper support, acoustic drivers (now its like my 903sh and not really low), and sarmad cam drivers. THen off to sell to my friend who wants it. Just a bit of reading on phonexs, setool2lite and its quite simple to get things done.

Posted by: montsb

Yeah, I put the Audio drivers in there so I could hear it while I am working in the bars and places like that. Just have not really head much about the camera drivers, BT drivers and the such. Do the camera drivers make that much difference?

Posted by: aw614

I am not sure, I took a low light pic in auto mode, it seems to have been a bit nosier than before, I'll have to play around with it.

Posted by: montsb

Hey there aw614, I would really appreciate that! I have considered changing that camera drivers, but didn't want to mess with it if there were not good to great improvements or features. To be honest, flashing my phone for the audio drivers took me about 6 times trying before I got the hang of it. Then I also flashed my sister's phone so she could hear her W810i in her work truck and got it in just a few tries. The audio drivers also seemed to make the blue tooth head sets louder as well, so I was very happy with the results! Anyways, I guess I am off topic, but figured people that changed the appearance of their phone probably have flashed their phones as well. Make sense?

Posted by: aw614

its actually not that hard with xs++, you can do fs++ and find the correct folder and swap the file. I was messing with it last night, so I dont remember which new driver I put, but it seems a lot better. I should try super cam driver, there seems to be a special mode for it, I would probably need to play with, that I just read

Posted by: dextorau

im looking at getting a 6x lens for the phone so which one would i go with for this mod the K750 6x zoom?
