Will 8125 force a change to my plan?

Right now I have Unlimited MEdiaNet. I really want to get an 8125. I know I can buy one from eBay and start using it, but I want to avoid eBay. Can I just walk into a Cingular store and buy one, without them forcing me to switch to a more expensive data plan? If I refuse to change my plan, will they refuse to sell me the device? Any insight is appreciated.

If you get the correct sales person they should not force you to change your plan. If you have your phone setup correctly you should not have any problems using the unlimited media net. Check the forums for more info on the differences. One main thing as I understand it is that the medianet forces you to use a proxy server.

I'll be buying an 8125 late next month. PLEASE let me know how it goes for you in-store. I've been wondering if I'm gonna get flak from the sales clerk about "upgrading" to the pda connect media plan.

I tried buying the 8125 no contract (wasn't available for an upgrade yet) at a store since I already had MEdiaWorks (old plan w/ unlimited Internet) and they wouldn't sell it to me. I asked them what if I don't want to use the Internet and only want to use the phone and PDA portion and the rep said that they are not allowed to sell the 8125 without a PDA data plan. I left and went to Fry's and bought the phone for $40 more. MEdiaWorks (and MEdiaNet) works just fine on the 8125.

Good luck in finding someone at a Cingular store that can sell you just the phone.

They sell it at Fry's!? I didn't know that. How long ago did you buy one there and what was the price?

What about Amazon. There sell the 8125 for $499.99 "PHONE ONLY, NO SERVICE PLAN".

I bought it 2 months ago. It was $489. I believe it still is $489 if not cheaper. If you want to save about $30 and can wait a few days, you can get phone only at www.letstalk.com for $459 w/ free shipping.

I have gone into multiple corporate stores and purchased multiple 8125s. If you are buying retail, they can't require you to change anything.

Actually depends on the region. In my region we are required to have the appropiate data plan on a device, so buying a 8125 would require the loss of a Media bundle since MediaNet is not to be used with a 8125. Normally if you buy such a device we do require a data plan activated on the device. We sometimes do exceptions if you buy a device at full retail price.

as bad as it sounds, it's about who you know at the Cingular Store. one of the closer Cingular stores near me, i've developed a good bond with one of the Sales Reps and when i went in to buy an 8125, he never badgered me once to buy the Unlimited PDA plan... but i've been in plenty of other stores where the Rep will basically force it down someone's throat until they finally give in and do it... their favourite line is always "you can sign up for the unlimited PDA and get the XXX rebate, then cancel when you get the rebate approved" (i have no idea if they still do it or not, with the PDA rebate.. but that was always the thing i heard).

Though if someone tried that at my store they would be written up. An audit is done each week and if the wrong data plan or no data plan is on an account that a data device was sold to its bad news.

so what if someone was buying the device as a gift for a family member? i have had several wives who come in to buy highend data devices for husbands to use just a as pda with no data package at all. if someone walks into my store i'm surely not going to let them leave empty handed if i can help it.
