Cingular markets In NV, CA, MN, and FL seem to have one negative trend more and more ex Best Buy Smurfs.

I always make sure to go in and chit chat with the company store people nationwide on my travels. For the posters who do not know I am a pure indirect seller of Cingular. I have been that way for two and 1/2 years now. I used to work directly for AT&T Wireless and then helped with the Cingular rollover in a few areas out west. I always go in and judge the direct store staff, I look to see how they treat their customers. I ask them some background type, and product knowledge questions so I can rate my direct competition. Call it personal secret shopping.

I find more and more ex best buy drones or what I cal 3rd world sales people have landed up with jobs at Cingular. A few of these clueless gems had jobs at the store management level. I also notice a lot of nepotism too when it comes to these infected stores two in Minnesota, two in Las Vegas, 5 in LA County alone, and 4 in Fl orlando/south miami regions. I see people one day trying to sell me service plan , now pushing cingular phones they hardly understand.

I think this trend is bad, anyone who works at best buy should never be in sales to start. I took down some notes from my last weeks trip in Las Vegas, NV at one of their bigger cingular stores there.

- I walked in at noon may 27th, and I wanted to see the black v3's. A CSR who happened to be the manager showed me the displays, but he stops and tell me the v3 was a better deal at the local best buy. He gave me the name of a sales rep in their wireless department who could "give me a deal" since they could not beat the instant rebate price. My reaction to his offer was honest. I told him some people are willing to spend more for better customer service. I asked why would he send me to best buy when I was at a cingular store, he told me he used to be a manager there. I walked out and laughed at him.The look on his was priceless, like a deer in the headlights. How can a manager of a Cingular store directly tell me to go someplace else?

So beware of the Best Buy infection growing on your markets. I am not anti-best buy I just think they have horrible sales people.

What exactly is direct and indirect?

Posted by: Integra99

so you just do this for your own records or some what as a Mystery shop? do people get any information from this when you are done with there good and there bad?

but one thing you did say in your thread that made sense because my company actually does it like that is Pay more for the phone and get the Help you need,

Interesting. Best Buy is another company I hate, their management team is RUTHLESS towards their employees. Ironically, this fits Stan Sigman's persona, but thankfully the industry itself puts the guy in check.

I worked at Best Buy for years and I'm not perfect, but I don't consider myself an infection.

Posted by: jbzcar

I used to work at Best Buy, too.

Also a former Best Buy Employee, proud to be selling Cingular!! While I have never directed a customer to the store for a phone, I have for Accessories that we didn't currently have in stock. I live in a town that has a very "NOW" mentality, and I would rather have them find what they are looking for, rather than direct them to the website to have to wait for it.

So what I am wondering, beyond the manager sending you on to the local BB, what other HORRIBLE mistakes are these sales people making?

Hey, my DH is a BB employee! I've been trying to get him to come over to Cingular for a few months. Although I do know a bunch of current BB employees that couldn't sell a Big Mac to a starving person...........

You have to remember that within the last year cingular was losing a lot of their "quality" employees or atleast emplyees who had been with the company 3+ years and knew their stuff. This caused a highering spree and with all the negative talk about cingular as an employer only the most deperate or those who didn't care about pay were applying.

Hopefully they can be molded into quality employees but management has a lot to do with that.

The fact that there is nothing to the job makes it so anyone can work there. And don't give me that "AT&T had more professional salespeople" before bit... I signed up to AT&T wireless 2 years ago from some girl with purple hair and piercings on every (visible) body part at a kiosk in the mall. If anything the stricter mystery shops might be cleaning out the herd. Those not making money in the new at&t probably don't deserve it anyway. There is hardly any "stuff" to know.

AT&T Wireless never owned those kiosks in the mall... LOL

Maybe they were agents, regardless.. if she could do the job.. anyone can.

Posted by: ivwshane

No one said the job was hard but if you think that just because someone can do the job and knows their stuff means they are qualified or a quality employee, you are mistaken.

I work in an indirect and we have had a couple of really good best buy employees... most dont get hired though. Who could blame them not making commission for their sales? What motivation do they have to know everything about each carrier?

Just my .02 cents

As a Best Buy employee that just got hired at a Cingular COR store, I just wanna say bite me. I'm sure there are people that don't think you're all that great either. I feel that I will have no problem adjusting to the new store. I've been in retail for 4 years and Best Buy was just a filler. I know a lot about wireless and also study it outside of work. I think you need to re-evaluate your opinions and make them a little less general.

i worked at best buy when i was just near ending hs. worked there for like 3 months.

hated it.

As a former BB employee, I think this guy needs to shut his trap, and anyone else who thinks that BB employees are infectious. Yeah you will have those sales people that dont have a clue as to what they are doing, but heres the funny part. There are some people that work for cingular that couldnt sale a free phone to someone, even if that person wanted it. I left best buy because I wanted to start getting paid for all the things that I was selling. The cool thing about working there was that I just didnt sale for one company, I sold for Sprint, Cincinnati Bell, and Cingular. I like my job now cause I make money for the stuff that I sell. I think this guy needs to try and work for BB and we should all watch him and his buddies that think BB employees are an infection, get washed out of working there cause they cant hack it.

Posted by: BellaDea

I've never worked for BB, tho i have worked in many indirect locations (ultimate electronics being closer to the BB like atmosphere) but this OP's story is the perfect example of judging all by knowing only a few. True, that guy shouldn't be manager when he's directing customers away from his location to buy somewhere else. I've seen this many places from people that have come from all different indirect dealers. The fact that some of the people you talked to that were "unprofessional" used to work for BB has nothing to do with BB themselves. It's all about the person. Besides, Cingular COR provides their own training to their reps so no matter where they come from, they learn straight from cingular at being hired. Just because those people don't break off from their old crappy ways doesn't have anything to do with who they just came from (except maybe for MS ...jk y'all)

so anyway, don't judge EVERY BB indirect employee going COR just because there were a few that were not the brightest crayons in the box.

Posted by: speakindutch

Though some are, not everyone from bestbuy is a moron. The fact that cingular has a growing number of idiots working for them is a reflection of management. Cingular does not have a reputation of being a good employer. As a result they do not attract the best sales people.

Don't you think you benefit from knowing the other carriers? Don't you think you would be able to get more sales (or more out of each sale) if you have a broader base of knowledge?

i think you should shut your trap, you just put your tiny foot in your mouth. As a cingular exclusive rep for the past 6 years, i think you selling all those companies at once is junk. and bb is the worst place to buy any cellular service hands down, i get 20 customers a day coming to my store because bb dont know crap and sends them here. not to mention, their phone prices are soo much cheaper, they should outsell anyone. I tell them "you bought it at bb, you go back to bb" sorry pal, but bb sux.
