How functional is the V3m as a mp3 player?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I know it supports mp3 playback, but how well does it work as a mp3 device?

Can you stop a track and pick up where you left off at a later time?

Is the navigation to play and pause easy to use or clunky to operate?

Ultimately I realize it's a phone, but it would be nice to get rid of my 1 GB flash mp3 player (Creative MuVo) that I use for podcasts.

Any input would be appreciated.

supports WMA playback, i couldn't get MP3's to play back at all. They phone wouldn't read them at all.

do you have a V3m or V3c? I ask only becuase you have a V3c next to your name,

so far I have nto been able to file transfer into the phone (gonna take hacks) , nor do I have a TF card yet so dont know how well it actually works as an MP3 player

Edit read your reply in the other thread, TF card etc must be a V3m

Were you able to play MP3 on your previous V3c? I can on my V3c, though, of course without nice features like playlists. I am just wondering if they took that ability out?

According to the rep at the store that I talked to today, it will still play the MP3's off the PHONE MEMORY ONLY. On the card and with their player it has to be WMA because of VCast (that is evidently it's format). She said it is exactly the same phone except the TF card (which will only play WMA) but everything on the phone memory will still work as it does now. She also said that you could put MP3's and pics on the TF card from a reader on the PC and "move" them to the phone (not copy) but so far no one has figured out how to do that yet.

you can move music from TF card to phone, but they have to be wma format. If they are in mp3, the phone wont even see them on the TF card.

I got my v3m last Friday. On Sunday I transferred a couple of songs onto the phone memory. Didn't buy a MicroSD card yet, and I might not ever.

I couldn't find any instructions in the documentation on how to transfer songs from my Windows PC to the phone, but I eventually made my way to Motorola's site which informed me I needed to browse on the phone to the SYNC MUSIC feature under GET TUNES & TONES menu. Then I launched Windows Media Player 10, and it found the phone just fine.

Synchronizing songs was easy. I checked off two MP3's I had in my library that I had previously ripped in iTunes to MP3 192kbps format, hit the Sync and it was done in a couple minutes. WMP did say it was doing some sort of conversion during the process, so I don't know if it converted to WMA, but when I go to GET INFO on the song in the phone, it displays as a 192kbps file.

The music player (and the entire Verizon menu for that matter) sux. It's response is slow and not as intuitive as my last Samsung phone. But the phone looks nice. I've listened to the songs thru the phone, which plays like speakerphone mode, and also thru a wired headset. Both sound like a 192kbps file ought to. Have yet to receive my Bluetooth headset yet.

yep, when u saw it converting on WMP, it was converting to songs to WMA format. The vcast music portion of the phone (be it downloaded from vcast, or from ur TF card) is all WMA format. No mp3 format songs will show up on the phone if they are placed on the card.

This is the kind of info I was looking for. Hopefully things will change when Alltel firmware is released for this phone. Until then, I can wait. Thanks.

Has anyone tried the hack that works on the VX8100 to get mp3's to work (v7 firmware) - essentially
* press the menu buton
* press 0
* enter 000000 (all zeros) for the password
* and then at the bottom select music player or mp3 or something like that and enable mp3 support

Can someone with the phone see if this is a possibility?

What drivers are you guys using to get the computer to recognize the V3m? After I switched from the V3c today, the computer will not recognize the V3m. Everytime I plug the USB cable in, the phone says "unauthorized charger". I was using the driver from Mark's page. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i cant find a music option on my phone?

If the V3m has factory installed MP3's and plays them then you guys with the V3m should be able to get MP3's to work like this. After you transfer the MP3's to the phone by whatever means use P2KCommander to set the attributes to "System File". So this way the phone will think it's a factory installed MP3 and should work correctly. You won't be able to delete the MP3's through the phone or Master Clear them either but you can just undo the attribute any time you want to delete one. Also if you just use P2KCommander to transfer the MP3's it will automaticaly set the attribute to "System File". Give it a try it should work.

I am more concered with being able to listen to mp3s from the memory card (TransFlash) - from other posts it seesm that the phone will play mp3s loaded onto the phone directly, but not from the memory card. I personally think this is a load of crap since it is advertised as and mp3 player - but I am hoping that someone will figure out how to hack this soon.

It is?

I thought it is advertised as a VCAST music player, with the ability to sync with WMP (using .wma) on a PC.

does anyone have this successfully working with both motorola phone tools and with the media player 10/11?

if your getting an error, its probably due to a few things. I get errors when the song name/title is too long, or if its a weird format (.aac, or mp4 layer audio). Make sure its a short title, and that its in wma or mp3 format.

random, but does anyone have a photo of the V3m's mp3 player. I would like to see it , and all the V3ms ive tested were dummys so i couldnt check myself.

Posted by: 750-r

what do you want to see its internal ....in the phone you go to sounds and there is a list of songs that you loaded yourself

Posted by: Verizonuser92

what i mean is like, is there a screen through my sounds or domething where there are mp3 controls using the keypad or is there just the play button like the ringtones. I heard there was one, but i may be wrong.

There is an application called Manage Music, it supports playlist, artists, albums, genres, inbox, shuffle.
When you play songs, it is a full player interface with album image displayed and arrow keys are used as control.

hey guys. i have the silver v3m, and i have some questions about playing songs on it. if you purchase only the music essentials kit, can you play music on the phone, or do you *have* to have the microSD card as well? if you CAN play music from your PC without the microSD card, do you have any idea how many songs the phone itself will hold without the memory card? finally, do you have any approximations for how many songs the different memory cards will hold? like, a 512MB card will hold how many, and a 1G will hold about how many? is it difficult to convert songs from itunes (mp4 format) to windows media (wma)? thanks so much!!

Posted by: brirobkey

Has anyone figure out how to see the songs loaded from wmp or vcast in bitpim or p2kcommander? I don't have windows xp, so can't get wmp 10. I've tried converting mp3s to wma's using a converter, but when I try to load them to my phone using mpt, it says "request denied by phone(unsupported media type(0x4f))". I was thinking if there is a way to see the music file loaded from wmp10 or vcast, I could figure out why the wma shows as unsupported.

Posted by: InstantSoup

I get sync errors every time i open WMP 10, then go to sync on my phone. It then comes up and tries to install a v3c which it cannot install properly. I have already installed the v3m drivers and have it working with Moterola phone tools. I dont get it, can someone help me out on making this baby a mp3 player?
