904sh and UK Vodafone Sim

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mloomis

I looked through here again tonight but didn't find an answer. Has anyone tried a UK Voda Sim in a 904sh? Heading to London on Tuesday an could try it out if noone has.

Thanks

Posted by: AL9999

It won't work. 904SH is locked to Voda Japan and as such only recognises Voda JP SIMs.

Posted by: Timsta

BUT if you have a 904SH from japan and are in London.. it wouldn't hurt to try to satisfy the crazy fans out there

Posted by: tenniskrigarn

Dont know about the UK one, but jap 904sh does not work with the Swedish Vodaphone SIM anyway.

Posted by: Timsta

well there's one confirmation.

Posted by: mloomis

I will check it out just for kicks.

Posted by: zak_ben

but how it can be unlock to UK vodafone SIM?
it still a vodafone SIM.. there is no kind of different in the SIM cards..

Posted by: alan2000

I got a UK sim in jp 904sh
neah!
they don't like each other!
the Germany one doesn't work too~

Posted by: scotttttttttt

Wirelessly posted (portalmmm/2.0 N412i(c20;TB))

Aww really? well.. the chances of the aust sim working just decreased..

Posted by: mloomis

I assume it's a pretty recent UK sim?

Posted by: AL9999

Look... all networks are different, regardless if they are all called Vodafone or all called T-Mobile or all called Orange. They have different network identifier codes, making them independent of each other.

So when I say that only a Voda JP SIM works, that's why.

Posted by: Timsta

yes. al.. but you like to erase all glimmers of hope don't ya!!!! DONT YA!!! lol. haaa

Posted by: AL9999

Heh... I'd rather it be that the Japanese phone companies actually want to give us the best technology without us having to hack our way into getting it, but I know better already...

Posted by: Timsta

hahaha.. yah. right.. they wouldn't make it that easy for us

Posted by: AL9999

I know... I discovered yesterday that I need identification proving that I'm going to live in Japan longer than 90 days only to buy a prepaid phone from all three carriers (KDDI au, KDDI Tu-ka and Vodafone) while I'm there next month.

Not only do they not sell their phones outside Japan, they don't even let visitors to Japan buy them either! GRRR

Posted by: john0213

hey al, how's the prepaid phone in japan? mind shooting us some photos? i would just like to know what phone they sell just to see their lower class phones, assuming all prepaid phones should be in the lower class range~

btw, i feel like we are bunch of smitgo in lord of the ring, holding our 904 keep saying...

"unlock, my precious...."

Posted by: AL9999

Well I'll give you the links to the pages where they show their phones off... some will be in Japanese, some in English.

Vodafone
http://www.vodafone.jp/prepaid_en/kisyu/index.html

In Vodafone's case it's not just restricted to the models in the above page; you can actually buy any phone with model number V1-V4 from Yahoo Auctions, take it to a Voda shop and they'll register it with a prepaid number for you, but again, you need ID for it

KDDI Tu-ka:
http://www.kddi.com/tu-ka/kansai/prek/set.html

KDDI au:
http://au.kddi.com/prepaid/senyo/index.html

DoCoMo are in the process of killing off their prepaid system and don't sell new prepaid subscriptions anymore.

Posted by: Timsta

isn't the prepaid system still require users to be residents of JP?

Posted by: dav34

I think you don't need the alien card if you're gonna pay with credit card...

This year, I re-registered again (post paid) with Vodafone JP, and use my old phone that I bought the year before, 902SH... I just gave them my credit card detail and they didn't ask for alien card... then they just issued the new SIM card for me... but it costed 2000-3000 yen for this...

Posted by: Timsta

hrmm.. 30 bucks is okay. hmm.. no alien card needed.. are they laxing upt he rules?

I don`t know how it is with Vodafone or T-Mobile but phone locked to Orange UK works with polish orange SIM card too. Also all "3" locked phones will work with every european "3" USIM (I`m not sure about HK USIM but I think it should work). So I think it depends on specific network.

Not sure... but I don't think so...
Btw, 2000-3000 yen is not for the SIM card... it's just their registration fee... on top of that, I need to pay the monthly fee straight away...

Posted by: Timsta

ahhh... 30 bucks for the set up fee.. thats normal for us in canada. we get that all the time. sometimes they wave it tho. depending if sales guy is desperate

Posted by: dav34

That's pain in the az... if they want more customers, then they should waive it...

Posted by: Timsta

hehe. who knows whats goes on in the marketing minds of vodafone.

Posted by: UncleAllEvil

30$? OMG, that`s sick. Like 4-5 years ago in Poland O_o
Now in Poland it`s either free (with most contracts) or you have to paid less than 2$ for SIM card (prepaid). No registration with pre paid.

Posted by: scotttttttttt

Yeah it's free in Australia too.

Can I use a 603sh with vodafone prepaid? or does it have to be a v4 series or below phone?

Posted by: UncleAllEvil

V6 and V4 series are japan only handsets
I see you have Toshiba 904
How is this phone? I really like it`s design, one of the best looking phones in the market now.
Can you listen normal (without DRM) mp3`s?

I don't think so... the only phones available for pre-paid are the ones that you can see on their pre-paid website...

EDIT:
V102D Enjorno, V302SH, V401D, and V301D were available for pre-paid before... not sure about now though... maybe sold out...

Posted by: asmok

I was thinking about getting a 603sh from yahoo auction or ebay to play with the TV tuner. If 603sh can use with prepaid, then I can just bring the phone to Japan when I go.

904T is great, except the camera don't have AF. I like it since it's one of the few Jap firmware phones with T9 on it. Not that many people like the design since it's design for guys (even the ads for 904T are guys). You need to use beatengine to convert it before I can listen mp3 on the phone, but I haven't try it yet.

Posted by: AL9999

No you can't use the V603SH with prepaid. Like I said, V1-V4 only.

If you were to walk in to a Vodafone shop and ask them to sell you a new phone for use on prepaid, they'll only offer you the phones that are in the link I posted earlier. But if you buy any V1-V4 phone WITHOUT a phone number (they call them 白ロム phones (Shiro-romu - Empty ROM phones) and take it into a Voda store and ask them to activate a prepaid service on it, they should do it for you (according to what I've read on forums, I can't guarantee they'll do it).

Uncle that's interesting... I hadn't heard of cases like that until now. But I'd definitely say they are the exception to the rule, most phones are locked to specific networks rather than network franchises like in those cases...

As for me and prepaid, do you think they'll accept a foreign VISA credit card? I highly doubt it, they usually only accept Japanese-issued ones. And for prepaid they require ID because of the system being abused by people trying to extort people fraudulently. So without an alien card they won't sell their phones at all, according to their policy.

According to the Voda JP online store, the only official prepaid phones available are the V302SH (JDM GX25 but yellow, eww) and V102D enjorno, although the V201SH (JDM GX17 anyone?) will be out late July.

Thanks for the detail info on voda's prepaid sytem.

I'm not really sure about pre-paid though...
However, they accepted my VISA credit card (not Japanese) for monthly plan / post-paid...
Well maybe because I registered to Voda JP before they changed the policy in early 2005, they might crossed out some of their usual requirements, since they were able to see my previous records...

Or, those required documents are only for new customers...
